I have made two neoprene tails, but now I want to make a fabric tail. The performance spandex I'll use has a four way stretch. Given that this fabric will stretch way more than neoprene, I know I'll need to shrink my neoprene pattern before using it on spandex.

Does anyone here know from experience how much I should shrink my neoprene pattern for spandex? 20%? More? I'm having a hard time visualizing it.

Thanks!

This article has a section on altering woven fabric patterns to knit- it's basically the same idea for altering a sort-of-stretch fabric to a very-stretch fabric.

My patterns for fabric and neoprene are between 1-3inches different. Less around the knees while around the waist it's 3 inch different. Maybe sew a fabric to your neoprene pattern, then put itnon and take it in. Its better to have too much than too little.

Can't wait to see the new tail! There are so many great prints to choose from, too. Good luck!

With four way stretch fabrics you don't need a seam allowance. :) I found a fantastic youtube video that basically had me measure the circumferance around me from my belly button to my ankles every town inches then divide by four. I traced out the measurements on an old sheet and that's my pattern. For the fluke shape I traced my monofin on the fabric, lining up the monofin where my feet would go. I forget the video, but I'm sure it won't be hard to find.
