View Full Version : Various Commercial Fabric Tails: Can I Cut the Rapid to Fit?

I want a tail to take on my trip to Utila (I want some mermaid in the sea pics!), but even if I finished my silicone tail it would be WAY too heavy to bring and my scale painting SUCKS so my neoprene and fabric tails look like crud. I am considering buying a Magictail, a FinFun tail, or even the Mertailor fabric (I don't really trust his silicone, but I think you'd be hard pressed to mess up printed fabric), but I don't really want to BUY a monofin when I already own both a Competitor and a Rapid. Now there's no way I'm slicing up my Competitor, but would it be possible to cut my Rapid to fit one of those fabric tails and save on buying them with the monofin already inserted? I can't seem to find actual DIMENSIONS of these monofins, so I'm not sure how close to the Rapid they are...

The Fin Fun is 22 inches from tip to tip, and 21 inches from heel to tip. It's previously been mentioned that Magictail monofins also fit into Fin Fun tails (or was it the other way around?), so I assume the size is similar.

Magictail and Fin Fun flukes are quite similar. Their monofins will fit into each other's tails. Though with the Fin Fun monofin, it will be a slightly smaller fit in a Magictail. But its really not that noticeable, it does fit the width and height of the fluke, just a lower dip in the curve of the fin.

Okay cool... The rapid is 21 inches wide so I guess I could cut it. But maybe I will sell it because I think I am going to give the Mertailor Eco a try... He is selling it on eBay so I can GUARANTEE a return if it's not up to my standards. I mostly want to get it just to see what it is like since it has so few reviews! I really wish one of the printed tails was made for a Competitor. I am an ocean diver and I love my big monofin!

You could just alter a pre made tail. Cut off the fluke, sew in new material and turn the chopped off fluke into pectoral fins or dorsal fins etc.

Or undo the hems on the fluke and sew in extra material to redesign it around the rapid.

That's what I was considering doing, though I don't want to throw off the printed look too badly. I guess I will wait and see when I get the fabric tail. I am most definitely going to add some fins to it, I know that.

If you want we can make a fabric tail that will match your monofin without the need to cut it.
