Coyote's first silicone tail!

Ok so I've been messing around with silicone for a while now, and I feel pretty confident in starting my tail now. It's going to be slow going since I'll be doing this as I have money and time, but I wanted to start a thread for it to get feedback as I went. ^.^

So far I've ordered the scale shaped cookie cutters, based on an unused scale design by Lotus_Blooming.

So my scale cookie cutters should be in soon, and I'll start sculpting as soon as I have a day where there's nothing else to do.

Just my opinion, but you're going to have to go WAY thinner on the scales, or your tail is going to weigh a thousand pounds! Cool design, though!

Do you have a pasta machine? It's a great investment, I got mine at Michael's (around thirty bucks, and even cheaper with a coupon), and you get even thickness for the entirety of the construction. Run the clay through on the thickest setting.

No more progress on my silicone tail but I'm super excited about what I've gotten done on my latest fabric tail. I had to share. :)

The fluke is just sat in place for now. :) i just got done removing the sequins from one seam and resewing. Gotta start on the other side next

Wow! Cool! It shouldn't be too heavy in the water, sequins aren't absorbent.

Is that the sequin fabric that you can run your hand across it and it makes the sequins lie the other way?

Yep! Green/purple on the side shown, black on the other side. :) i did scratch tests on the sample they sent before i ordered it. If the sequins get scratched, and the color comes off they're just black!

Your fabric tail is looking really nice! That was good thinking about the sequins scratching. When I used Monster I would put it in the oven in a metal bowl, let it melt, then pour it in a thin layer over cookie sheets. I switched to Plastalina in the end though.

Ok so I pulled the scale out this morning and......
IT WENT GREAT! Pulled out of the mold so easy, I was very surprised.

Its hard to see in the pics but the scale is actually a turquoise blue fading into a blue green.

Also, after pulling the test scale I realized that the smaller scale on top was a bit thick. I like that thickness for the one scale, since I'm gonna make necklaces, but fir the sheet I thinned it up so I can layer them better.

Got some test scales on my scale sheet poured. Not my colors, just some extra silicone from a more adult project, but I'll be able to see how they look laid on top of each other and stuff. Pics to follow when they're cured.

Edit:

Ok so they aren't perfect since there was still some dried clay in the mold, BUT they are good enough that I can see they're going to layer very well. I'm quite happy with the thickness. I'll probably start pouring excess silicone in the other parts of the mold too, since these scales pulled up the clay that was in there and I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to get all that clay out.

I smooshed them to try and flatten then since I didn't have anything to pin them too and the silicone smooshed everywhere.

I can pin them now, to a DTD of my arm. Try number two will go on soon. Also my mold is completely cleaned out thanks to our power washer.

Your camo scales look very thick. If I may, underfill the smaller part of the scale and let it cure. It will fill the little scale enough to define the edges and you won't get that overflow look... Then underfill the second pour a little and tilt the mold so it's thinner near the top of the scales, otherwise the overlap is going to be way too thick.

Ok so we're moving and I'm going to spend this month packing and preparing. I melted down the fluke sculpt I had started and will be continuing work after we've settled into the new place.

I have still been working with practicing with layering the silicone scales. My practice DTD of my arm came out a size too big, does anyone know how to fix that without cutting off circulation? I don't want to have my tail not fit because my DTD wasn't right enough.

As for comparing your arm mannequin to one you'll do for your legs, you really can't go by that. You'll need someone to help you do your body mannequin, and when you do, just wrap the cling film snuggly...a nice tight fit. When you make your tail, it will fit you perfectly! Silicone is pretty forgiving. I think a lot of the trouble people have with fit is making a tail based solely on measurements. It is not the ideal way to tailor a tail. Body doubles all the way!j
