Hey everyone! I could use your help. :)

I have recently aquired a large collection of Copic Markers (*EXCITED SCREAMING!*) after saving up for so long. I have started to work on my Artist Trading Cards / ACEOS again as a means of practicing with the markers and seeing what things I can do with them in the small scale. For example, here are some of my orca, well Keiko, images:

Now, I have started to practice using color and what better way to do that than mermaid tails? I worked on / am working on a series of mermaid flukes based on the photos that Mermaid Raven posts from Merbella Studios (all permissions given, no worries on that front!) My problem is, I am trying to name the tails after the persons who got them, such as "Raina's Tail" or "Iona's Tail." Some of the tails I don't know who they went to and I have been combing the Merbella threads trying to put a name to the tail, but some of them are less obvious than others. That is where you fine finned folk come in!

I'd appreciate some assistance ID-ing some of the tails. There are only a few in my first picture that need help, and I am working on for more at the moment that I hope to have posted soon.

So, Name. That. Tail! :D

Edit: Thanks for the help! I just finished four more and I think I have all their names. I am checking up on them at the moment. I will still post for those who are curious. I also have four or five more lined up and ready to be made. Phew.

Edit 2:

More tails!

The 3rd one is Amarylis I think?

The Second one is for an un-named and unknown in the community free-diver as far as I know

My pleasure ^_^ These cards are stunning, I understand not selling them but I know I'd be buying a whole set if you ever did. I'd love to see what you come up with in the future. You're an amazingly talented artist.

I believe that the 2nd tail might belong to trig the fairy or at least she had it in Hawaii for some photo shoot. I think I saw it in one of her tweets or one of kariels tweets perhaps
nevermind the tail twig used is similar but different

I might sell prints. I did get permission from Raven to sell the cards if I wanted to. If I did the print route, I would probably group them into sets.

And of course, her info would be included on them.

When I get my new Mernation tail, will you draw mine like one of your French girls?

(No, really, I will pay to be a part of your collection)

It's like mermaid trading cards! I'd love to collect them all!

Are you going to throw any mermen's tails in the mix?

Little_Orca
04-24-2015, 10:22 PM
I will gladly throw other tails into the mix, mermen as well. Really, I just pick tails I think will offer an interesting challange for color blending and try them out. Most of them just happen to be mermaid tails at the moment, but mermen are welcome, as well! Im working on a few more at the moment while it's quiet at work. I will post them when I am done, as some will need some ID-ing. :)

I also need to find a better camera / scanner for them. Some of the colors are so muted in that photo! (ie, Iona's tail)

Little Orca I think I may have been mistaken with the third tail. I thought it was Amarylis' tail, but now I think it may be this girl's tail, but I have no idea who she is:

I'm not sure. I think it had more purple on it than the one there... I'm ok leaving it named that until we get a different name. The picture is what matters ;)

Five more tails in the works. Phew. These are fun and super helpful for color blending.

I have decided that once I can get a decent representation of the cards, as my camera and scanner are total crapola at the moment, I will offer them up in bundles on my etsy as giclee mini prints, the same size they are in person, with all their corresponding information on the back.

Hey by any chance, would you be interested in illustrating tail concepts? These ones that you've done up are amazing. :)

I have about seven more of that need to be colored. Still looking for a way to scan them in a manner that does them justice.

Yeah like it's a merbellas fluke, I just don't know where to put the color concept. I'm horrid At blending colors.

Pearlie: I can get them close when I feed them into my computer and mess with them in Photoshop and adjust all the levels, but they do not come out at the same quality and a lot of the gray background gets lost.

PearlieMae

Ah...consistency can be a bitch. If you get them into the computer as individual files and adjust accordingly, you might have better luck.

Some quick down and dirty PS:

1: In Levels, work with the mid-tone slider more than the Light or Dark sliders

2: In Hue/Saturation/Lightness, boost the saturation a little

Also, under Adjustments>Shadow/Highlight, Midtone Contrast is your friend.

A quick fix: Duplicate your image layer, change it to a Soft Light layer and adjust the opacity (so it barely makes a difference) and then adjust that with the Hue/Saturation/Lightness to where you like it, then flatten and save. (Or save as a layered PSD or TIFF file and do a Save As a JPG)

Hope it helps!
