Hey everyone, I finally opened my Etsy shop yesterday: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeaSerpentStudios
And I actually just made my first sale! Thanks Elodea! :)

For now I'm just listing my silicone stingrays and nudibranchs, but I will eventually be adding more sea creatures and I will post those too. I'm also going to be selling my silicone kelp tops after a little more product testing. POSSIBLY I will also be selling mer-armor pieces eventually, but that's still in a more preliminary testing phase.

For now, take a look at my shop and let me know if you like what you see!

Omg these are Awseome!! Cutest things ever <3 Maybe one day I'll proceed to silicone too... :) But I really love these, I'm really considering to order one sting ray, those are just irresistible... <3

Thank you so much, everyone! :) I'm really proud of them, especially the stingrays since that was one of the very first things I cast in silicone! It was just meant as practice, but they ended up looking so cute and everyone loved them, that was what actually convinced me to open an Etsy shop in the first place! I think I might eventually do some other types of rays, too, since these seem so popular.

It's actually pretty funny that you open your shop at the same time when I listed those octopus-thingies :D I was like this caaaaan't be real when I saw these :D Seems like mermaids really need these kind of lil friends so they are popping out everywhere :)

Nerissa, I love your little octopus-things! I want to try making an octopus out of silicone at some point. And I haven't listed custom color options on Etsy yet, but it's something I could do and might list at some point. If you want a custom-colored one, feel free to send me a private message here or on Etsy and let me know what you want and I'll see if it's something I can do with the colors I have!

I don't know how much work you're willing to put into your little buddies, but you should totally consider making stingray tops! I've never seen them before and they would look super cool! I, for one, would be very interested!

Theobromine
04-27-2015, 01:30 AM
Elodea, they'll be sent out first thing in the morning :D

Sassenach, I've actually seen stingray tops made by both Raven of Merbellas and Mermaid Hyli, so I wasn't originally planning to make my own stingray tops because I didn't want to look like I was copying, but I've had a few other people request them at this point, so I'm thinking of doing it if I can put enough of my own spin on it that they look really different than the other two.

Theobromine
04-27-2015, 01:30 AM
Wow....that was quite the run-on sentence there :P

Theobromine
04-27-2015, 01:34 AM
I'm gonna play around with some different color schemes with the stingrays to make a few that look like different species than the bluespotted ribbontail ray (the bluespotteds are just very near and dear to my heart, I used to see them a lot while diving when I lived in Queensland). But I'm also planning on sculpting a manta ray at some point, possibly one or two others as well, and I really want to do a bamboo shark because those guys are so freaking adorable.

Merenneito Nerissa
04-27-2015, 01:49 AM
Whooo whenever you'll decide to do that shark I'll by tons of them!! All the sharks are just so lovely, I think I love them most from all the seacreatures. Everytime mermaiding amongst kids I usually find myself talking about sharks with them, I love the reactions like " Wowww, you've seen a shark? Didn't it bite you/eat you? " and then telling them how lovely and sweet sharks really are, how important and how misunderstood. :)

I have to see how my new tail looks and think about the colors then, but wonderful to know that there's possibility for color-options too! Yeyy!

p.s. thank you for liking my octopus ^_^

Theobromine
04-27-2015, 02:02 AM
I knooowww, I love sharks so much! I've actually been telling my husband for years that I shall have a pet bamboo shark someday! They stay very small (2-4 feet long depending on the species) and they're actually very easy to keep and breed in captivity (for sharks, anyway). You can keep one in an aquarium of a couple hundred gallons or so, which is pretty manageable.

And not only do I love your octopus, I am soooooo gonna order one of your beautiful circlets as soon as I have the funds!

Had to google this specific shark and omg you're right, these are sooooo CUTE <3 <3 <3 Can something really be this adorable... :D

Theobromine
04-27-2015, 11:01 AM
Blue Mermaid, the silicone is safe, it's dragonskin. The pigments are Pearl Ex and I'm not 100% sure what their safety rating for aquariums would be, but the pigments are all mixed directly into the silicone so I imagine they're completely encapsulated and won't leach out. There's at least one video on the Smooth-on website about how to make a fan coral aquarium decoration with some of their materials (I think it was one of their plastics, using a silicone mold).

I might have to start one or two new critter sculptures this week...I've really been wanting to do them for ages...just have to finish up a couple things I'm making for friends first (so I can then show examples of those later too).

Thanks so much, guys!!! I'm learning a lot from this already. I still have some editing and refining to do on my shop, so I'll let you know when I update that. In terms of color variations, I actually have a couple different ones that look fairly different from what I've already posted, some of it from just variations in color mixing (trying slightly different things and it not quite turning out how I expected) and a couple where I was trying a little more shading to see if I could make them a bit more realistic. I'll post a picture of that soon, I think.

Theobromine

Order one then :D

Here's a picture of all my current stingrays together. It kinda shows that I've done some playing around with different shades and spotting patterns, so it's totally possible to do other colors/species. The green one in the middle is the very first one I ever made and I was just testing colors so he looks a bit odd, but he was my very first one ever so I'm keeping him as a pet :)

I love these! They're so adorable and tiny and cute and... :D I know you don't want too much on your plate, but what about little nautilus and jellies? Oooh! What about little turtles, sea horses and starfish? :D I'd love one or two of these one day :) super cute! :rollover:

Theobromine
04-28-2015, 11:56 AM
OceanWhisper, I've already thought of a lot of those! Some of them might be more difficult to mold and cast than others though, just to keep that in mind. I've basically been starting with creatures that are flat on the bottom because you can cast them easily in a one-piece mold (and even then, the nudibranchs are really tricky because the gills are so thin, the silicone actually has trouble flowing into such narrow spaces, and then you have to be really careful pulling it out. I actually went out the other day and got a syringe to see if I can make it easier). That doesn't mean I can't find a way to make more complex, three-dimensional creatures, though! Just means it will take a little more time and effort, possibly with multiple pieces I'll have to put together, so they may have to be priced a bit higher. I do love a challenge, though!

SeaMonkey, I haven't nailed down the exact price for my kelp tops yet. I only have one finished prototype so far, and it was just going to be for me until I realized people were interested in them, so I'm currently working on one for a friend, and have two others lined up after that (just waiting to receive the bra bases they're sending me). That way I'll have some better examples of my work and can work out a price. I've already figured out how to improve on my original a bit. Here's a picture:

Aaaaaa, I can't wait! I can't wait to show you how I'm going to attach my little ray so that he can go swimming with me. I'm brain-storming names already, but I think I'll have to make his acquaintance first, lol.

I know, USPS is terrifying! But it doesn't have that far to go, I'm sure even the US postal service can't mess this up ;-)

I'm waiting with baited (hah) breath for those tops to go up on Etsy! One of my friends goes by Mermaid Kelpie, so we're pretty excited.

Theobromine
04-28-2015, 12:43 PM
Posting anything is terrifying, but I may just be a little paranoid; I've never actually had anything go horribly wrong. I've mailed a couple stingrays to friends as birthday presents and such. One just went elsewhere in Washington, one went to Canada, and one went to India, and they all got there fine! Although the overseas ones took a week or two to get there, and I might look into better international shipping options than USPS. We'll see.

I'll list the tops as soon as I can, I just want to make sure they're really good before I do! My first one was actually really heavy because I made it before I figured out an easy way to cast the silicone thinner. I mean, silicone is heavy, no getting around that, but it doesn't have to be TOO heavy. I also figured out a better way to hide the little gaps between the kelp blades where the bra shows through (on mine I just painted it over with green silicone), and I might be able to add some custom strap options as well, but that's what I need to test out on my friends' new tops and see how well it works.

Talia

OMG, THAT TOP! :jawdrop: :swoon:

It's so original, and I love that it looks like real kelp. I would be interested in one of those too...

Theobromine
04-28-2015, 01:12 PM
Glad you like :) I at first thought I'd messed it up because I didn't measure the length of the kelp blades when I sculpted them and so a couple of them weren't *quiiiite* long enough to cover the whole bra cup when I stuck them on (I had to do some creative rearranging). Then I realized I can just make a few extra blades by themselves and add them where I need extra coverage. And since I figured out how to make them thinner and lighter, adding a few extra pieces here and there shouldn't make them too much heavier. Also that way I should be able to make them to fit just about any size bra, just by adding as many extra blades as I need to. I'm going to be working on that today and testing that out. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

O hay guise. Sorry for my lack of updates. I fail terribly at social media :P I've been working on kelp tops for my top-testers. After I've finished and sent off those ones I'll be listing the kelp tops for sale, but I figured I should post something here to show you guys what I've been up to. This is my second finished kelp top, and I'm very proud of it! I think it's already a million times better than my first one. It's already with its new owner and she's going to be swim-testing it this weekend, so hopefully there will be some pics of that too!

We call it "Blåstång" in Swedish, which is basically the same thing as bladderwrack. "Blåsa" is bladder or blister, and tång is seaweed. (Or pliers)

I'm the proud owner of this beautiful top, and I got to swim in it this weekend! Waiting for better pics from the photographers, but Nerissa did get one photo!

30239

This top is so beautiful, and SO comfortable! Almost makes me never want to wear a shell top again, really :P The top was made custom to my size and with my color specifications, and I'm THRILLED with how it turned out! The colors are much more vibrant in person and there's more shading than the photo shows. The craftsmanship is fantastic! Very well made and sturdy- I can tell it will last a long time! Even with all the abuse I put my tops through, haha. At the same time, it's very light weight for a silicone top! It's actually about the same weight as my abalone shell top- so it doesn't weigh on me when I'm dry or when I'm swimming, which is great!
Not only that, but Cyanea was really great at communication during the process to make sure everything was as I wanted it, and she constructed it much more quickly than I expected! I'd really recommend it- you can get it in whatever size you need and pick whatever colors you want :)

:) I'll list him on Etsy really soon, I just have to take some better pictures and figure out how much to charge for him (I'm too tired to do that now so maybe tomorrow). He's bigger than the stingray and the paint job took more work, so he'll cost more. But I'm also going to make another type of octopus that will lend itself to other different species so I can do simpler paint jobs, and those ones probably won't cost as much. The blue-ring guy took three layers of paint for each ring (dark brown, light brown, and blue). Although blue ringed octos do exhibit some color variation (there are several different species) so I can change up the spotting pattern a bit too.

That octopus is sooo cute! I seriously want like 7 of everything in your shop. Maybe charge $25-$30 for the octopus?

Theobromine
06-14-2015, 04:42 AM
Thanks! Yeah, I was thinking 30 for the octopus, just since it's a more time-consuming paint job. I'll list them very soon, I've got a couple cast that I just have to paint the spots on. I also painted white dots on the bottoms to look like suckers (I went back and tested it on the first one I did) and they just look so much more complete now. I'm also experimenting with a way to make jellyfish with an air space inside so they float! I just finished a very rough test and it worked great! Needs refining to look more realistic (and balance the amount of floatiness cuz the silicone was a bit too thin and he's actually floating too much), but it works and it looks really cool! I put it in a mason jar on my husband's desk so he'll find it when he wakes up :D

AND I finished my last tester kelp top! That will get sent off on Monday, so as long as everything's good with them, those will go on Etsy very soon as well!

Theobromine
06-14-2015, 04:52 AM
Here's a picture of the underside of the octopus with the suckers. He's still basically flat on the bottom but the suckers give it a little more dimension. What do you guys think? It's not the most super realistic job ever but he definitely looks better than before. I welcome suggestions and constructive criticism though, since I'm trying to make my creatures as detailed and realistic as possible. I want to try doing two-piece molds soon too, so I can make things that are more three-dimensional.

Curse you, mer-sister. I ordered a kelp bra from Raven with kelp bobbles on them like that, though reverse. How is it that we always seem to get the same stuff! XD

Your designs are different for sure. Iona and I just have this funny knack for always looking like one another in some way accidentally. <3

:P Great minds think alike? ;)
When Cyanea said she was doing a top that could be made to any size I knew I had to jump on it! And she didn't disappoint! I like tops that can be custom made like these, cause then they can be made to fit my big 'ol boobies :P Where as most of the sculpted ones from other makers are a C cup (usually around 34-36 band size) or down.

And OH MY GOSH love the octo and the jelly! I wonder if you could cast the octo in resin? Cause I'd love one to have in my hair but worry that the octo (at that size) would be too heavy for my poor super thin super fine hair. Maybe something to think on :) I think resin cast creatures could be a hit for hair clips n stuff!

Iona has epic boobs! I feel honored I got to decorate them :jester:

I could make a smaller octopus that could be cast in resin. I haven't tested resin with the urethane I use for my molds, but we could do a small tester if you want. With the jellyfish I also figured out how to make air pockets in things, which I could use to make the current octopus lighter. He's still kinda big for a hairpiece, though. I just wanna make little friends and you all want to put them in your hair! Haha!

Also...I was all excited to show Husband Man the jelly jar....he opened the jar to get a better look and discovered that the jar was once a pickle jar that had not been properly washed, so he got a noseful of pickle juice smell

As you can see, I've made her three-dimensional! This was my first try with this technique and while she's not 100% perfect (I wish I'd made her a little thicker, oh well), it worked really well. I think I'll make another tomorrow! (Since my husband will of course steal this one and take it to work with him, because husbands.)

Technical difficulties were had! My computer was being a barf brain buttface. Then while my husband was fixing it (patience, I no has it) and taking some more product pictures for me, my best friend came over and dragged me to the gym by my hair (at least I got some exercise). So now I am up way too late to say I have updated Etsy with new pictures and listings for the octopus and bamboo shark! Here it is: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeaSerpentStudios?ref=hdr_shop_menu

Any of my critters could theoretically be made into wearable items. I make them just as-is because that's the way I like them, but when Elodea ordered her stingray she mentioned she wanted to put him on a wristband so I siliconed a piece of felt onto the bottom to make it easier to glue on (since glue wouldn't really stick to the silicone). It's probably not something I'll list on Etsy as a variation, but for you guys on here, if you want to convo me and request an added felt patch or something to make the critter easier to glue onto something, that's totally fine. It would work better with the flat-bottomed creatures (which is basically all of them except the shark, which I made in 2 pieces which I stuck together to make it 3D) but I'm open to suggestions.

Hey guys! I popped on here to write a review of Cyanea's top that we tested on Sunday!

First off, let me say that the thing is so comfortable. There's no pinching, no sticking, and the top is so lightweight! I expected it to be much heavier than it actually is. Swimming in it is a breeze, let me tell you. Never once did I feel like it was going to fall off, and the netting straps in the back held everything securely in place.

I had a friend adjust the neck strap for me and she tugged pretty tightly and everything still held together, no problems at all. Pictures don't do the top justice - the pigments Cyanea used shift colors in the sun. In some lighting, it's a dark purple, and in the sun it shifts from lavender to an almost icy blue. It's fantastic! There are no bubbles in the cast, no untrimmed pieces, nothing. It's an extremely professional-looking casting and painting job. I'd highly recommend one (and wish I could wear it all the time but alas, work dresscode...)

Okay, so, I am the third kelp top tester (mine is the dark green with bronze) and I have to say it is freaking amazing. I could pretty much copy exactly what Octavia said. It doesn't move AT ALL when you're swimming, it is basically weightless in the water, and the colors! My kelp is so much more than just green and bronze. It's like a deep forest shimmering with hidden metals. I love it. It fits superbly and I love the fact that YOU CAN'T SEE THE BRA. She covered every inch of strap for a completely natural look and it's fabulous.

Now, keep in mind that I am a bustier woman and standard seaweed tops would be much too revealing on me. They're just not sculpted large enough. Cyanea's method allows me to be completely covered and modest in any position. No worrying about flashing kiddies!

To sum up, I love my top and I think everyone should have one in their merwardrobe. (Merdrobe?)

This reminds me! I'm not busty in any sense of the word, but the way Cyanea makes these tops, she can accommodate pretty much any size lady. I'm actually kinda flat, despite having C's and run into trouble with tops flying open underwater since I don't "fill them out" as much as someone who is more blessed in the chest, haha. I don't have that problem with Cyanea's tops. They're wonderful!

Woof. I have spent the last week or so moving into my new place, in the middle of a !$@#$%^&&^%$#@!#$%^&%$#@$% heat wave. In case you don't know, I live in Seattle and grew up in this area and do NOT handle the heat well (probably even worse than your average Seattleite) and we're having record-smashing temperatures here. When it gets this hot in Seattle, everyone pretty much just...dies. So, this is my ghost writing here :P

Anyway, considering how miserable and useless I get in the heat, moving and unpacking and organizing and all that shite has taken me way longer than it should, but I have my workshop room mostly set up now, and I managed to finish painting these guys to send out:
31105

Anyway, so yeah...working on stuff, just...being kinda slow because bleahhhh. Also, it's been getting so hot in my workshop room the silicone I was using to paint the nudies was curing way too fast, it actually seized up before I could finish the second orange-spotted one I was working on. *grumble* So I've been taping foil over all the windows and I had to go out and buy an a/c unit yesterday, which I've never had to do before. I'm pretty sure it was the last one in any of the stores in Seattle. Target and the hardware stores were all sold out, and I found mine at QFC of all places. I think the only reason they still had one in stock was because no one thinks to shop at a grocery store for an a/c unit.

So, erm, yeah. Oh, and the other thing I wanted to mention is that I will still hopefully list kelp tops on my Etsy soon, I just need to figure out what bras I can get easily that come in a wide variety of sizes and aren't too expensive but that are still good quality. I want to be able to offer them in any size, but I need to at least take into account the larger or more unusual bra sizes that might cost significantly more, and figure out how to charge for that difference.

Here's a quick pic of two new sharkies I made for my husband's co-worker. They're for her two young nephews and she asked if I could do blue on one and orange on the other (those are their favorite colors). I had a few moments of BUT BAMBOO SHARKS ARE NOT BLUE AND ORANGE until I realized that nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum)....come in blue and orange. And red and purple and yellow :P I used to work at an aquarium where we had 10 of them. And they're the same basic body shape as bamboo sharks, barbels and all. So I painted them to look like baby nurse sharks (the babies have spots!) and just made the colors a little more intense (especially on the blue one) but stayed pretty true to life other than that. Fun times.

Morning, lovely merfolk! Got a quick question for you guys (while I work on a lil sharky-sharkie for a certain someone...)

I have these four stingrays that I made a while back, just kind of sitting around. The two bluespotted ones are some of the first ones I made last year, and they're imperfect so I haven't sold them or anything, just kept them around. I kind of messed up their tails when I tried pouring some silicone that had already gotten a little too thick (I had tried to use a silicone thinner so I could paint with it, but I didn't like how it worked and I didn't want to waste the blue silicone I'd mixed so I quickly poured it into the tails of the stingray molds, but it had already gotten kinda gloppy). As a result, their tails look a bit lumpy, and the silicone is a lot softer and stretchier than the normal silicone, even though it's fully cured. Also, I made the clear coat on the body parts a little too thick and it's noticeable if you look closely. If anyone is interested, though, I was thinking I might sell them for half price ($10 instead of $20). As long as you don't care that their tails are a bit weird, you could have a cheap stingray that's ready to ship right away. If anyone is interested I can put up an Etsy listing.

The two greenish-gold ones aren't defective in any way, they're just a weird color. I made them when I was casting my first kelp piece and accidentally mixed up way too much silicone. Didn't want to waste it so I just poured it into the stingray molds. So they're a greenish-gold base color with a bit of a golden wash over them, and eye details. I was thinking of selling these guys for $15 since they're not defective, they just have a boring paint job. Again, let me know if you're interested and I'll put up a listing for them.

Separate from the tops so if you can't afford/don't want a full silicone top but you like the kelp look, you can have a bracelet for cheeeeeeep!

Here's the top and a couple views of the bracelet:

I'm also finishing up Fifi's octos which I didn't finish before leaving last week because I didn't want to rush them and do a crappy job. Luckily she's awesome and has been super understanding and patient with me! She had asked me if I could make my octos in a different color scheme, like off-white and brown, so I suggested doing a Pacific striped octopus because they have those colors but still with a cool pattern, and they have the same body shape as the blue-ringed octopus. Here's how the first one looks (still painting all the spots on the second one, but nearly there):

Thank you so much! I'm really excited to offer the kelp bracelets as they're quick and easy to make and won't have to cost an arm and a caudal fin (har har). Also I don't think anyone else makes anything like them (yet....wonder how long before someone decides to imitate them though :P )

What sizes do you offer for the kelp bra and how much do they cost? Beautiful :swoon:

Theobromine
09-15-2015, 07:44 PM
I can make them in any size! I'm working on finally making an actual Etsy listing for them (it's taken me a while to work out how to do that, go me), but at the moment I'm charging $150 plus the bra base (you can send me your own), or $175 if you don't want to send me a bra and I'll supply one. I prefer to have people send me a bra that they know fits, because that takes a lot of the guesswork out of it; and I've had enough "fun" bra shopping even for myself that I know that sizes and shapes can vary a lot across brands :P Also, some bra sizes like larger or unusual ones can be harder to find, from what I understand. But the way I made the kelp, I can apply it to any size bra, and I can add extra pieces if I need to cover especially large cups. And no two ever end up looking exactly the same, which is nice.

Oh, and a quick poll if anyone feels like helping me out: how big around are your wrists? I wanna get a general idea of how much people's wrist sizes vary and what some average or common sizes are, for the kelp bracelets. I can make them custom of course, but I was also thinking of just making a few ready-to-go ones I could list for people to buy, and then just charge a little more for custom size/color.

Ok, greenish gold kelp is easy enough to do! I'll start making some when my box of pigments arrives (totally out of green). I've been calculating the volume of each mold so I know how much silicone I'm using, so I should be able to figure out how to price everything soon.

Any chance of buying just a strand of the kelp? An estimate on the price of a goldish/green? I have an idea for a top and the kelp strand would be a component.

I can definitely paint it any way you like. I did make it with the one species in mind, but I've already made custom ones that I've painted to look like other species: two nurse sharks and a tiger shark (that one belongs to Merenneito Nerissa on here) so it's no prob :)

Clearly I need to sculpt some more sharks! I have so many more creatures in mind that I want to make, I just haven't had the time to sculpt new ones lately because I've been working hard on my tail. Which, of course, is a giant monster that is consuming all my time and much of my energy :P

Haha, you have captured my feelings on the matter so accurately :) But I like to be able to make the things people want, so I try not to be toooo anal about it :P Anyway, I haven't really gotten the chance to update all my listings with all the color variations I could potentially offer, but you're welcome to send me a convo on Etsy and I can make it into a custom order and make one just for you :) That's probably the quickest and easiest way to do it.

Same goes for anyone, actually. I know I said I was going to add the spotted octos on there and I still haven't. But anyone who wants one can just convo me and I can do custom orders. I won't charge extra for custom colors, the prices will still be the same as the ones on the standard listings.

And Talia, thanks :) nice to see you back!
