I'm considering making my own silicone top! Pretty ambitious considering I only know the basics of silicone and have never worked with it before(: My question is this: do I make the sculpt over a well-fitting bra or a mold of my chest?

If you just want one specifically for you, I'd do it over a mold of your chest. An inexpensive way to make a mold of your chest is to do a duct-tape dummy, but I'm not sure how well that works with boobs (I have yet to try it for my own top)

Good plan, that's what I was thinking.

Re: duct tape boobs: Just don't put the tape on tight enough to compress your chest and it should be pretty accurate. Check out this tutorial: http://so-sew-easy.com/diy-duct-tape-dress-form/

You can also use clear packing tape instead of duct tape as it's thinner and will produce a closer-to-accurate form. Plus IIRC some duct tapes contain rubbers that can interfere with silicone.

If you've never worked with silicone before, you might want to try a couple smaller projects first. Not saying I think you can't do it (cuz you totally can), but it will help build your confidence and experience. I did several smaller silicone test projects before I made my first silicone top and it really helped me get a feel for the materials (plus I ended up with adorable stingrays). Good luck and have fun! Lemme know if you need any pointers :D
