Intro from Utah

Hello Everyone!
I had posted this elsewhere a few days ago, but just saw this is where I should have done it.
I have been lurking around here for a few weeks and have commented on a few things, so I think it is time I finally introduce myself. For now I am on here as aine43, but that will probably change soon. It's a tough decision to change my name, as I have used aine for so very long, since about 1995 I believe. I chose aine as my online persona because she is a water Goddess, but the problem has always been that no one knows how to pronounce it. It is not pronounced the way it looks at all. It is a Celtic name and the closest I can come to writing it the way it sounds is Anya. So I have decided to pick a new name for my Mersona. I think I have one, but not quite sure yet. I will announce it when I finally decide for sure.
Anyway, a little about me. I am 47 years old, and like most of you, I have been in love with mermaids for as long as I can remember. I think the first mermaids I remember seeing were the ones in Peter Pan, then of course the mermaids on the Submarine ride in Disneyland. From my very first trip to Disneyland, I loved picking out all of the mermaids on the rides. Submarine, Peter Pan, Small World.
I grew up in San Diego, so the beach was part of my life. Unfortunately, my family decided to move away from San Diego when I was 17, so I am an inland Mermaid right now. But the ocean always calls to me.
I started collecting mermaid goodies in the early 90's and currently have over 700 mermaid lovelies in my house. I have some really fun pieces, and when I can find really unusual mermaids I have to snag them up. I got married about a year ago and went to San Diego for our honeymoon. While we were there my hubby took me to Mermaid Cove in Old Town...Oh my gosh, so many beautiful things! I came home with quite a few new additions.
I have even included being a mermaid in my Burlesque performances.
So a couple of years ago, I entered a contest to be a mermaid for a day. I finally got to swim in a tail and see what it feels like!!! I loved it, although I do need a great deal of practice with a tail.
Ever since that day I have been planning for my own tail, and for Christmas my best friend bought me a Mahina fin. So I am planning on that to be my fluke. Well this past weekend I finally got to go shopping for my fabric!!! I picked out purple and turquoise. It is going to be so beautiful! And I have been asked to perform at a Ren Faire in July. This is finally happening for me! I am so excited!!!! Edited to add that I started making my tail last night! Woohoo

Do you remember when Disneyland actually had live mermaids that used to lay around and wave to passerbys in the Lagoon? They were only there for a couple years. Rumor has it that too many young men kept jumping in the water trying to catch the mermaids so they had to stop. lol

I never got to see the live mermaids. My mom told me about them though. I have seen quite a few pictures of them. So I bet you have quite a few December Diamonds pieces for your Christmas Trees, right? I have about 80 December Diamonds pieces, they hang around the border of my living room all year long. I really need to start cataloguing all of my pieces. I plan to take pictures of some of them to add to my albums on here.

Yes, I have a few Dec. Diamonds pieces scattered in the collection. I'm very selective so I really don't want a memaid in a cowboy hat. My favorites are a collection of mermaids in different poses sitting on iridescent glass bubbles and 3 large ones in different colors I got from the Mermaid Show in Vegas. There's quite a few from many different vendors along with some large seahorses, clownfish, starfish, jellyfish etc. Maybe I will post a pic as it gets closer to the Holidays. Would LOVE to see your collection when you post!

Don't get too excited. It was off the strip at The Mermaid Lounge at the Silverton Hotel and Casino. It has been a few years since I have been. Their "show" consisted of a huge circular salt water aquarium filled with marine life in the front of the hotel/casino. Every couple of hours live mermaids would swim around for the kids using air hoses, goggles, and Vegas-style sequin cloth tails. I guess I was expecting a little more Madison from Splash and a little less Viva Las Vegas. Would I go again? Probably, but more for the tsotchkes.

Oh I was actually just there a couple of months ago. They didn't have too many mermaid items for sale. There were prints for sale in the gallery and couple of things in the gift shop. It sure is a beautiful aquarium though. I saw one of the mermaids swim.

That's a shame. They had some really cool stuff last I had gone. It sounds like they cut back. I was disappointed with the mermaids. The aquarium is small enough to hide the airhoses, ditch the goggles and go for something more Madison from Splash and less Viva Las Vegas. I would LOVE to see mermaids like Raven and Hannah and a merman like Arion with their realistic exotic tails gracefully swimming in there! Think how mesmerizing and realistic that would be! MUCH more impressive. Aaaaahhh the frustrated actor in me.

That's a shame. They had some really cool stuff last I had gone. It sounds like they cut back. I was disappointed with the mermaids. me.

I went behind the scenes there in 2011... The guy in charge of the pool moved to canada as a director a couple of years back. I met one of the mermaids, who was an ex olympic synchronised swimmer... The casino did not really want to spend money on the outfits, surprise surprise. And the goggles was necessary because of health and safety and salt water marine life.
