I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for costume parts from various characters in movies, media, comic books, and cartoons, whether or not they meet a strict definition of mermaids.

For instance, for awhile, Callisto (a character from the X-men) was given tentacles instead of arms (thanks to a mutant who had the power to transform others' shapes, but not her own). I think they'd look cooler if they were purple or blue instead of green, and if perhaps they were surrounding the arms instead of replacing them, maybe attaching the tentacles to a vest of some sort. It should be noted that Callisto (even with tentacles) has enhanced senses and combat skills, but no notable aquatic powers, and I'm uncertain if she could breathe underwater or project herself through the water at the time (it never came up in the comic, and she no longer has tentacles, so I can't find out). Here are some picture of Callisto with tentacles.

Callisto is from Marvel Comics, and the images were found on Google from the marvel database and the rpg.net forums.

One of the newer X-men characters, Transonic, is able to fly and naturally looks like a humanoid combination between a fish and a jet of some sort. However, when she flies in high winds or at incredible speed or into the upper parts of the atmosphere, her body becomes more aerodynamic and piscine... including taking on a mermaid-like form. I was thinking that several aspects of her appearance would make some cool costume parts for a creative mermaid.

Mermaid is a character from an alternate future world, also by Marvel. She is a member of a future version of X-men, and she has a fish tail instead of legs and is able to swim through the air (though we're uncertain whether or not she can breathe underwater, or has other watery powers, or how capable a flier she actually is). Her combination of the traditional mermaid image and X-men uniform is pretty cool, though.

Another character, Aspen Matthews, from the Aspen Comics series, Fathom, can breathe underwater, turn into living water, control water, etc. She was raised by a human, trained as an Olympic swimmer but became a marine biologist, only to discover that she was actually the child of one of the Blue (water-breathing people who live under the ocean in great high-tech coral cities, some of whom can merge with water) and one of the Black (abyss-dwelling people, considered mythical even to the Blue, with godlike powers over water). While the Blue wear armor that resembles bone or coral, the Black wear impressive outfits that draw on elements from a number of different marine creatures, including lionfish, manta rays, crustaceans, etc, giving them the appearance of inhuman merfolk (their costumes disguise their legs as tails). Aspen herself, though usually shown in human or "living water" form, has been dressed in The Black-style outfits on at least two occasions.

I'm also curious: has anyone made tails for a more classic triton costume, with two tails (one for each leg) instead of two legs bound together in one tail?

I thought this was a pretty spiffy costume from Fathom for inspiration

Most of my inspiration is mostly born of ancient legends and myths with old paintings and descriptions. I like the classics ^_^

True, Mermaid Sirena... Fathom has a ton of awesome costumes and images. I did try to stick to images that resembled mermaids. And yes, the classics are awesome :)
