This is a story I'm working on. While I'm not swimming, working, or doing work for college, I'll be working on writing a story about merfolk that will be posted on fictionpress.com, if anyone is interested. If you have any questions that i can answer, I will gladly answer them. Right now the story is down for major edits, and if you follow the thread you will find out when it goes back up.

My story is a story with merfolk, humans, immortals, monsters, sea monsters, and much more. It's an adventure fantasy that takes place in the seas and on massive islands. I figured that a thread that involves a story with many merfolk main characters is definitely suitable for this thread. Whether you like mermaids, mermen, humans turned mer or vice versa. I believe this story will be a high seas adventure many people on here will enjoy. Every review you guys give me and every follower will help boost its popularity. If it gets popular enough I may go into publishing, but I need to see what people think first. I appreciate whatever you guys chose to do, but for now, if you have any questions, this is the place to ask them. Most answers should have something mer related because the merfolk play such an important rule.

If you don't want to ask a question, but you have a review. I'd like to read them here or on the site. I do not expect reviews to tell me how to write the story, but it is nice to read about what parts you liked most. If you just want to comment about the mers or other characters in the book, I want there to be a place for that too. I hope that if this thread is in the wrong spot it finds its way to the right one. If my story becomes popular enough, fins crossed, I want there to be a place in a community like this for people who want to talk about it.

Disclaimer about Reviews and Comments - Like I said before, I'm not looking for other people's ideas in reviews because I have my own. Reviews help me to know what works well and what can fall flat. I can't promise that everyone will like everything in my story, but a review can help me go a long way with appealing to an audience. If I read a review, I will most likely be thinking about how I can write to appeal to an intended audience. However, what I write might not always follow a review since I might have my own ideas for the story. Comments and gossip is great and if I get fans on this site, fins crossed, I think it would be nice for people to have a chance to not only talk to the author but amongst themselves too.

Disclaimer about Questions - I will do my best to answer what I can, but as a writer, I have to protect my ideas. If the question gets too close to spoilers or twists in the story that you should read first, I will let you know, and if that's the case, I will have to hold back some answers. If you have questions that concern smaller details that won't risk the story too much. I am happy to answer them. A few examples of questions I will answer are "When is the story coming out?, Who are the characters in the story? I liked this part of the story, but I don't understand (this). Can you explain it to me?". I'm not too good with sample questions, but if the question is general enough and the details of the answer won't be too much of a spoiler or something. it should be fine.

I'm really sorry about not getting the chapter up today. I started to work on it and then I got writers block. I hate it when that happens. I went to the pool and swam in my tail while thinking about my story, and I think I worked through what was giving me a hard time. Stay tuned because I'm still working very hard on this. I can't give an exact day, but I should have something ready soon. I guess there isn't anything a tail can't fix.

Okay, I see that you guys, or merfolk, are interested in my story, and even though I haven't gotten it done yet, I want you to know it is halfway done. I'm working really hard to get it done, and I wanted to get it finished and posted on wednesday this week. However, I caught a cold that gave me the worst headache. I couldn't even think straight for a couple days. I'm feeling better now, and I'm working very hard to get the story back up. I will finish the chapter, and as soon as I get the final edits finished, I will repost the story. I will also include a link to the story and search information to find it on the sight in case it doesn't get posted. I'm so sorry about the wait, and I'm sure my followers from before the edits have almost forgotten about the story. Just bare with me another few days.

I'm sorry about such a long wait. When I began the edits, I found a better angle for the first chapter. I started to make the changes, and it took me a while to get everything together. If I haven't scared you away, the first chapter was posted. I've surfaced again to offer my first chapter called The Meteor Shower.

Dylan broke the surface above the depths he called home, and he shook the water off his face as his messy hair stuck to his forehead. Dylan turned his head upward to see the sky. He stared at the oranges and reds painted across the sky as it changed colors just like the corals back home. After taking in the sight, he began to look for his favorite spot to watch the sky in his cove. He just needed to swim over there to enjoy the sights some more. He knew just the one. His favorite tide pool constantly flooded with enough ocean water to keep him from getting dried out. Dylan flipped onto his back to take another good look at the sky before swimming there.


'Amazing,' Dylan thought to himself while he floated in rolling waves 'The sky...that great veil above the world. No one will ever believe me if I described it. The surface isn't for our kind…that's what they would say…it's only for humans.'


Dylan flipped around and disappeared under the waves after a dark blue tail fin hit the water. He swam just below the surface to his tide pool. As soon as he resurfaced, Dylan crept to a rock piercing the waves at the edge of his secluded cove. His favorite place, a tide pool sheltered within huge rocks standing tall above the surface. His cove hid him from the estate guards that looked for him in the wilderness down below, and the humans on the shore. The turbulent tides, the wall of rocks around his cove, and the rocky shore kept humans and their vessels away. He quickly pulled himself into a fairly large but shallow tide pool. While he rested there, the sky erupted into warm colors as the radiant light sank below the horizon. He began to stretch out and make himself comfortable in the fading light. Millions of smaller lights pierced through the growing darkness one by one. The cove had a silvery glow under the light of the stars.


Dylan's blue eyes became a brighter blue in the darkness, and his light blue tail had a faint shimmer as it swayed in the water. He gasped in awe as the stars began to fill the sky. In Marianous, the Radiant and Luminous Coral's light changed with the tides in a fantastic display of light, but the display above the surface transcended the coral's light. Even though the surface was forbidden, he couldn't believe the others back home could resist such a sight. He knew how dangerous humans were. He heard all of the stories from his tutors back home, but he always believed that he would be the first to find a human friend. Before the Ancient World descended into darkness, the last friendship with humans ended in tragedy, and no one believed friendship was possible. He floated alone in the sea with this belief. Something in his heart told him that it was possible. No one else would entertain the idea.

I've started the next chapter. I have a fourth of it done, but it's taking me a while because I'm busier than normal this week. I'll have the next chapter out as soon as possible. Let me know what you think of the story so far.

I almost have the second chapter done. I've been waiting to find out what's happening with copyright law before I continue. I don't want to continue to share my story if there is a greater risk of it getting stolen. Right now, copyright law protects my idea, but the possible changes could make it unprotected. I can't post my story online for everyone to see if my idea isn't protected. I do want to make a living as an author, but my hopes are to let you guys get a glimpse of a free sample worth your time online for free. I can't afford the chance that a dishonest person will steal my idea without the copyright laws protecting my ideas. Right now, the laws protect my work the moment I post it. If that changes, you will have to wait until I publish it under more concrete terms.

I agree with Seaglass, it does seem like every sentence starts with either Dylan or he. Also I think adding some various complex or compound sentences would add to the style of the writing, but that's just nitpicking :P the story itself seems very intriguing :)

I'll double check the first chapter in case I want to make changes. I promise that none of this is the final draft. By the time I finish the story, I will be making tons of changes. I may be almost done with the draft of the second chapter, but I have 15 other chapters I want to add to this story. When I finally get around to publishing it, I'm sure the story will be different. I'll look into trying to figure something out with the "Dylan" and "he" issue though. I'm trying to write it from his perspective, but I'm sure a little bit of research will yield some answers.
