View Full Version : Making my first spandex tail

My monofin arrived today, which completes my list of needed supplies. My biggest struggle leading up to this has been deciding on a fluke shape because the possibilities are endless. I have spent countless hours doing Google searches for "mermaid tails" to get ideas, but finally decided on what I want and drew out my pattern tonight. I can see I will have to redraw it tomorrow (it's late now) but I am happy that the basic shape is finally figured out. After cutting it out I noticed that I didn't leave any extra space at the end of the monofin for a seam with snaps, to remove the fin when I'm not swimming in it.
I have chosen to use wrapping paper for pattern paper so I don't have a bunch of small pieces taped together. My plan is to sew right through the paper pattern and then remove it once my seams are firmly in place. I have done this with other projects in the past and it worked pretty good.
I will be lining the entire tail in swimsuit liner fabric (I hope I bought enough) to prevent anything ending up see through. My spandex color is dark red but the only bathing suit I could find to wear under it is black. Hopefully the liner will prevent the dark bathing suit from showing through. I have plans to paint the bathing suit to blend with the tail for a complete look.
So here is the fluke shape I have decided on.
29421
I am starting out with the finis foil but want a larger fluke than what the foil is really designed for, so I bought some boning at the fabric store and hope to line the outer edges of the fluke with the boning to help it hold it's shape when out of the water. If I have enough I am also considering adding some of the boning to the inside of the fluke fabric to replicate fin rays, rather than just painting them on. Has anyone ever tried this? Will it cause problems with drag in the water?
I haven't decided yet if I plan to add any kind of short fringe at the bottom of the fluke edges to help hide the snaps, but this is likely. IF I do it will likely be just the same red spandex I am using for the main tail and it will be short.
I am open to any/all suggestions as I work my way through this first tail creation. I will post updates as I progress through to the end and a final photo of me wearing my new tail.

This will be fun to follow! A tip or two-sewing on fins (dorsal, pectoral, ankle, heel....) and painting on scales can really help with realism, if that's what you're heading towards :) ..... Also they look pretty :rollover:

Yes I am looking for realism, but with dorsal fin I am a little concerned that while sitting on it (dry land and while getting into/out of the tail) I may rip it. Since I gained all this weight I'm not as limber as I used to be, lol. Moving is much more difficult, especially when trying to be careful.

I have a question and can't move forward until I figure this out. I have been sewing since I was a little kid, used to make a lot of my own clothing, etc. BUT, I was thin (US size 3/4) and if I drew out a pattern using my own outline it would always work out to the right size. I tried this today, had hubby do my outline on the pattern paper, but when we took my measurements and went back to mark the pattern, when I started measuring the patten I noticed that my measurements aren't working out correctly. (I'm no longer "flat" like I used to be)
I have only one chance at making this, only enough fabric to do this once. If I screw this up there won't likely be another chance to try again until next year (time to save enough money for more fabric). I am desperate about having this done by the time the weather allows for swimming outdoors this season... so... can any of the other plus size mers help me please?? I have been through the tail making threads on the forum and I feel completely lost. It has been SO long since I followed a "professional pattern" that I really am not remembering enough to make me feel safe doing this on my own. I had hoped to get the fabric cut and sewing done today but now I'm at a total standstill and terrified of doing anything more for fear of screwing this up and making it too tight/small.
Stress levels just jumped through the roof! :phew:

Example of the issue:
My hip measurement is 44". If I measure the outline on the patten it is 17 1/4" across... which is NOT 1/2 of 44, lol. How do I fix this and still make sure I'm getting the right shape for a form fitting tail?

How much stretch does the spandex have? I use my outline and I have nice large thighs, that way its snug because the spandex is stretchy. If you're worried about it being too tight, use your measurements, use this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFuIdWXd2Bo&feature=youtu.be And then loosely hand stitch the fabric together, like very loosely:
29449
like that.
try it on and see how it fits, mark where you want to machine sew it with chalk or washable marker, etc. you can always take it in. I had to take mine in like 6 times when I used measurements, but I'm no seamstress. Anyways, you can always take it in or let it out if you dont trim the fabric too close, spandex is forgiving because of the stretch, and tighter is better than looser for swimming. ALSO wear your monofin while taking measurements, especially near the ankles, because too tight ankles is really the only big problem with tracing, in my experience.

Oh and the large fluke will cause drag, but so will anything. my fluke doesn't allow me to swim fast, but its pretty ;D the more fabric, the more drag.

I always safety pin the sides to try it on before pinning and sewing. I lie on the fabric and trace myself. I hold the marking pen at a straight angle and draw my fattest outline!

The fabric is 4 way stretch spandex. My worry is more about cutting the fabric too small to allow enough room to let something out. Jaffa, I did lay down on the paper and had my husband trace a loose outline for me... that's where I discovered the issue with measurements. It didn't figure out correctly.
I spent this evening (with hubby's help) going back and starting over to make the pattern. I went back to the tutorials and to the method of using the tape, measuring myself every 2 inches, dividing it up, marking off the paper every 2 inches, etc. I just finished marking the 2 inch lines on the paper, will be measuring out the numbers yet tonight and using the 1st pattern to help keep the proper shape to it when connecting all those 2 inch "dots" lol. I am adding an extra 1 inch seam allowance all the way around... would rather go back and take it in when I'm finished than anything else. Once it is all cut out I will baste it, try it on, and then when it's right I will go ahead and sew it up. This is going to take a bit longer than I first expected, but I am back to moving forward again... for now, lol. Fingers crossed this will work out this time.

So, I finally got the pattern almost finished. Had to rework/cut the entire thing, and I now have 2 pieces that will need to be taped together once hubby gets home and helps me to line up the fluke portion with the rest of it. I reworked the fluke pattern, added some extra length to it so I can allow for the seam allowance, boning, and enough room to put the snaps beyond the end of the monofin. I'm sure I added more length than is really needed, by a couple of inches anyway, lol, but I can always trim it down if needed. Better to cut too long than too short. I totally forgot to allow room for snaps and boning when I drew out the first pattern. Oops!
Now I've hit another snag (seems to be a trend with me, lol) and will need to go back to the fabric store for another length of the swimsuit liner. It turns out the liner fabric I have is plenty long enough, but not wide enough for the entire fluke. Ugh! This will mean some extra sewing and pinning/unpinning, etc. once it's all cut out, so I can piece the liner together before sewing it in with the fabric (to get full fluke coverage). If only the liner was an extra 6 inches in width I would have made it. <sigh> Am hoping to get to the fabric store tomorrow night, so with any luck will be able to start cutting fabric by Wednesday sometime. I ordered 5 yds of the spandex, and again, because of the width and the direction I will be forced to fold before cutting, I have just barely enough to cover the width of the fluke.
I had considered downsizing the fluke, but then it feels disproportionate to me, and I'm determined to have what I truly want instead of settling for less. I've waited too long for this...
So, minor delay but definitely fixable. Not looking forward to having to unpin everything to piece together the liner, then pin it all back together again, but that is the only way to make sure the entire fluke is lined. Because I want this to be open ended fluke with snap closures, I don't see any other practical way to approach it. Minimizing liner to just cover monofin would mean "pockets" in there, which I'm sure will cause issues with air pockets, and who knows what else, so lining the entire fluke makes the most sense to me.
Still undecided but will also still probably add short fringe to the end to help hide the snap opening... which brings my next question for everyone...
When working with the fringe, should that also be doubled and sewn like the rest of the tail to prevent right side and wrong side of fabric being visible? The spandex is a bit shiny on the right side, dull on wrong side. Also, since I don't have a serger, I'm thinking this would prevent unfinished edges that may unravel over time/with use. Input on this?
And next question, when making the dorsal fin, same thing? 2 pieces of fabric sewn with right sides together and then turned right side out before putting it in? Will this fill with air and cause issues? If so, would some stitching to represent fin rays through the dorsal fin fix that problem?
Mermaid Wesley

A dorsal like that will provably get bubbles, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. It depends on just how your Lycra works. You could do fin rays. That could look cool and night fix the bubble problem. Or you could just leave some little holes for drainage. Or just squeeze out air in the pool.

Since I couldn't do much today on the tail until I get the needed fabric tonight I decided to finish up the beaded hair net I was working on to match my tail. I expect I will need to make some modifications once I get it out into the water to see how it works... but for now, this is done. :-) I wanted something that looked pretty and at the same time keeps my hair out of my face while swimming. I think this is going to work nicely. The beads are all silver lined glass and the thread is a coated beading thread, so it should hold up well underwater. I can't wait to see what it looks like when the sun hits it! Just the room lighting makes it sparkle something fierce. Yay!

Yes, bobby pins. I used 6 bobby pins and was able to shake my head all over and it didn't budge :) I will use more for swimming but am confident it's not going anywhere...

Ok, big step forward today. Ran into a problem last night as I was starting to pin the fabric, I ran out of pins! LOL! Sent hubby to the store on his way home from work tonight, he brought home 600+ pins for me, no way I can ever run out again. It took a few hrs to get all of the fabric pinned. I only have 1 room in the house I can work in so had to deal with the hardwood floor. Note: Spandex on hardwood floor slides and wrinkles anytime you touch it. I laid out the spandex, and after 20 minutes of trying to get it to hold still enough to get the wrinkles out, I got frustrated and pulled out my roll of masking tape. I pinned the top edges together and then taped it down to the floor, pinned 1 side, got to the other end, smoothed it all out and then taped the bottom edge to the floor, then continued down the other side. It still wrinkled easily, but I was finally able to deal with it.
Next came the liner, laid over the top of the spandex. Because I made the fluke bigger to allow not just seam allowance, but also extra allowance to put the boning in around the outer edge, the liner didn't quite cover the entire fluke, so I needed another piece. Folded the other direction it worked, so I had to piece together the 2 pieces of liner to get full coverage so I can line the entire tail. I overlapped these pieces of liner (both of them doubled/folded in 1/2) in the center and will be separating the cut pieces and sewing the liner halves together securely (making sure there are no pockets for air to collect) before repinning them to the spandex for full tail assembly.
Here is a pic of the way I laid out, taped, and pinned the fabric on the floor
29512
This is the new pattern
29513
Next came laying the pattern onto the fabric and pinning it down. This took a couple of hrs because I have so little space around the fabric. It was difficult to avoid wrinkles while I was doing this, and I found it difficult to get the pins to go through the pattern and all of the fabric pieces without putting holes in it. I took my time and used scotch tape over the pins and holes as it ripped while I worked my way around. I also pinned the center of the fluke and then all the way up the center of the pattern to prevent as many wrinkles and as much shifting as possible. I untaped only the areas I needed to cut on the bottom, cut the fluke first, moved the excess fabric out of the way carefully, and after another hour, managed to get it all cut out.
29514
I left plenty of extra at the top because I haven't yet decided how high I want the waistline. I will figure that out once I get some seams in place and can slip into it. I cut everything quite large, allowing more than I needed for seam allowances just out of fear of making this too small. Much easier to take it in than let it out if the pieces are cut too small. (my safety net)
I also added a lot of excess to the fluke, making sure I have plenty of fabric to get the boning in place and still allow seam allowance, and will take things in as I work and can try things on. Because I want to make the monofin removable via the bottom of the fluke I also wanted to make sure there is plenty of fabric for snaps without the fin hanging out the end. I will be adding the short fringe to he fluke after I get some seams in place to prevent shifting of the fabric.
29515
I am winging it with how I will add the boning, but it will only be the outer edges of the fluke so shouldn't be too difficult. I may decide to stitch it by hand before running it off on the machine just to make it easier to remove stitching if I screw it up. This is entirely experimental so will have to play it as it happens and fix as I go. I'm not sure if I will add boning to the bottom of the fluke (where it will be open with snaps) or not, want to see how well it holds without, then if needed can always add it in after. The purpose behind the boning is to frame the fluke so it doesn't flop around the fin when out of the water but I dno't want it overly rigid, either.
Now I'm tired (4:30am) and heading to bed. Tomorrow I will start the sewing after I get the room set up with machine and etc. I need to replace needle on the machine and other minor details and I'm trying not to overdo things in a given day. I really don't want to relapse with this pneumonia.
I also have some minor trimming to do on the fabric, around the edges of the pattern. I will post more pics as I continue. :) Slow & steady wins the race so hopefully this will be a win when it's finished.

Better you do it slowly and carefully than doing it quickly and making mistakes. Don't forget to have fun with it!

So you are going to add the boning to the edge of the fluke? I was thinking you were going to use the boning like the rays in a fluke. In other words, running vertically down the fluke instead of horizontally like they would be if they were on the edge. Does that make sense?
Mermaid Menanna
05-07-2015, 03:28 PM
Just trace the outer edge of the fluke... that will be boning. I have considered also using some of the boning to create fin rays in the fluke, but we'll see what happens. I don't know how well that will work or look. I figured I would decide when I get that far, lol.

Progress is slow but at least I'm making progress. Today I pieced together the liner, made sure to put in multiple seams so there is no issue with it separating. (seams are a little crooked but nobody will see them, lol) So both pieces of liner were ready to be pinned back to the spandex. I started pinning 1 side of the liner but when I finished I noticed a LOT of ripples/wrinkles. I am not enjoying working with this fabric. It's slippery and near impossible to keep it in place as I'm pinning it. After my dr's appointment tomorrow I will unpin everything and fall back to the masking tape on the floor, taping down 1 layer of lining, then pinning a layer of spandex to it, smoothing it, tape that down, then add the next layer, etc. until I have everything lined up and pinned and ready to sew... then I will run off the side seams just to make sure everything stays in place as I continue. Of all the supplies I have found useful through this so far, masking tape has been my savior.
Once the side seams are in place I will slip into it and have hubby help me get it pinned one more time so that it fits snug, then will run the new seams and trim off the excess. After that is done, so I know exactly what dimensions the tail will be, then I will reshape the fluke a bit by trimming it back closer to my original shape/size. I think I have at least 2 - 3 inches to trim off, then will run a seam along each side of the fluke bottom to attach liner to the spandex.
Next step after that will be to try it on again (inside out) with the fin, and mark off where the fin lays so I can start marking where the snaps will need to go. Then comes the fun part.. adding the boning to the side seams of the fluke, testing to see if that's enough to hold shape, and if not, adding boning to the bottom seam of the fluke. After the boning is in place then I will add fringe & snaps.
I have a long way to go.. hoping to get some time over the weekend to devote. I think once I have the side seams in place it will start to go much faster. With any luck I may be ready for paint within about a week. Here are pics of today's progress.
This is the seam where I pieced the liner together (falls about 1/2 way down the tail). There is no way this is coming apart or filling with air or water, lol.
29543
This is the pinned fabric with liner on 1 side, full of wrinkles and needing to be repinned before I can add other side of liner and then sew it all together.

Thanks Mermaid Wesley. Yesterday I changed my approach. After trying repeatedly to get it pinned I realized I had forgotten to fold it in 1/2 (length wise) to check to make sure it's even... it wasn't, lol. So... I did that and then decided it would be more effective to put one piece of spandex with the piece of liner for that side, separately, rather than trying to pin 4 pieces together at once. I sewed 1 of those last night and will be sewing the other one today. Once that is done then I will sew those 2 pieces together. I also did a little bit of trimming & reshaping of the fluke.
I think I'm beyond panic mode at this point... just feeling thankful that I left so much extra for seam allowances. I think it will be ok.
I sat down with hubby last night and asked him to work on some ideas for color patterns for me so that when I'm done with the sewing I can get right to the painting. He did a great job with the first one, but my jaw about hit the floor when I saw it. I then had to sit and explain to him that I have no wish to spend another month painting this thing, each scale individually. As much as I loved his idea, it would leave my tail about 3/4 covered in paint... which I don't want. I chose the red fabric because I want a tail that is primarily red with orange, yellow, & white markings. We'll see what he comes up with for his 2nd idea, lol. I will also be working on it as I take breaks from sewing.
Everything I am learning through this has me kicking myself for not just starting with neoprene. I have spent more money between spandex & liner than I would have just going neoprene from the start... and more headache because of the texture of the spandex. I have no desire to ever work with spandex again, lol.

Latest update...
Making progress in leaps & bounds now thanks to some helpful tips from the resident mers here at MN. Can't thank everyone enough for all the help.
I've had to do some reshaping of my fluke along the way, but still satisfied with the outcome. Today I put in the waistband and am currently working on adding the boning to the fluke. I have 1 of the boning casings sewn into place, working on the other side now. Once that is finished I will make the short fringe for the end of the fluke, get that sewn in and finish the seam line where the fluke will be sewn shut on the outer edges. After that I will sew in the snaps to close the fluke and I should be finished except for painting. I won't know if I need to add boning to any of the bottom edge of the fluke until I get everything done... have to wait and see how well the sides hold it in place first. IF I have to do that it shouldn't take long, so I expect to have my tail finished and ready for paint by end of this weekend. I'm so excited to be so close to finished. My next tail will have to be a darker color so I can skip the lining. I think it was having to deal with the liner that really caused most of my issues. I really don't like working with spandex, so over the winter will plan to order some neoprene.
Here are some pics showing the elastic waistline and the first side of the boning casing:

ACtuallu, even black spandex gets see-through on water. not ideal, but what ive seen that isnt see-through is anything with a coating. metallic, hologram, etc.
Mermaid Menanna
05-15-2015, 04:06 AM
The drawback with the metallic and hologram spandex is that it peels off rather quickly when it's used often. I purposely avoided those for that reason. I had bathing suits made of that stuff in the past and I didn't like how quickly it wore, leaving "bare spots" on the butt area and anywhere else that was rubbed against something on a regular basis. Maybe I will just go to neoprene next. I found some 3mm neoprene for $13/yd at the same place I got my spandex. I could use my current spandex tail as a pattern for neoprene and save myself a lot of the pattern hassles I went through with this one.
Thanks for the input about the darker shades of spandex though. That gives me something to think about before I spend anymore money. IF I went with a darker spandex that would mean that most of it would get painted, so not sure if that would make a difference in how see through it would be?
Mermaid Wesley
05-15-2015, 04:54 AM
That makes a difference for sure. My spandex tail used to be see through but then I painted it and it's not anymore. And I avoid shiny spandex for that reason too good luck!

Ok, well, the fluke didn't turn out in the shape I really was shooting for (the original first pic I put in this thread) but aside from that I'm not horribly upset with the final outcome. I still have a few snaps to sew onto the center of the fluke where I left the opening for removal of the fin, and I removed the boning for now... didn't work so well but that was my mistake (oops!). The plastic boning is TOO flexible and didn't lay right, it distorted the shape of my tail in some awful ways, lol. Hubby has some ideas on some thin stainless steel we're going to try to put into the casing, so I left the casing in place for future experimentation. I'll just keep trying until I get the results I'm looking for.
Anyways... aside from those few snaps that I will work on yet tonight, my tail is done and ready for paint. Tomorrow starts the process of experimenting with the paint on some scrap fabric before it touches my new tail... but I hope to begin the painting process this coming week. I will be calling Monday to set up my first swim lesson with the swim school. I'm so excited... can't wait to get wet!
