Hey ^.^ so I've been considering adding a fringe to my tail, to conceal the monofin more (end of the fluke is partially unsewn so I can remove the fin) and I'd like to ask you guys if you know some thin, flowy materials that I could use? Also, where do I sew the material? I do know about using shelf liner, but would like to maybe use alternatives. Thanks :) :rollover:

maybe you could use something gossamerry, though I don't know about drag. something like this? http://www.shindigz.com/party-supplies/party-decorations/gossamer/solid-gossamer/41845

Organza comes in beautiful iridescent colours, but it frays a lot, and you may not wish to hem it for the sake of aesthetics. Chiffon can come in a stretch form, and I have seen chiffon combined with realistic tails even latex with beautiful results, and being stretch it wouldn't fray...

This is the tail I was thinking of. I saw it on deviant art a while ago.

SeaStar and Leina those are both great ideas! I love the thought of iridescence, but it all depends on availability where I live

I know a lot of people including Hannah Frasier used a sort of vinyl ribbed shelf liner that you can get from home depot or menards. They cut the ribs into strands and it worked great as fringe.

Okay: I love the material on StellaTheSiren's tail here- do you guys know what material it could be?

That's Jessica Dru. My husband was housemates with her in college. Her tail is actually silicone with a removable monofin, so she can achieve that flowy look in photoshoots while also having enough strength in the fin to swim about safely.

Most certainly chiffon.
Yep, checked her facebookpage, and it's chiffon.

Oh oh YESSS. Ok. Like you have to be careful. I have a tail with 2 types of sheer fabric. One is shredding apart and the other is totally fine.

I hope you can see clearly. The one is woven fibers and the other one is more like mesh. The meshy one holds up better. I'm reeeally bad at fabric names. Also do a tear test in the store. Try to tear the fabric both in a horizontal direction and vertical direction. Some look good and then will rip really easily. The second pic is plastic feeling, stiff, not tear able, and is mesh like. The other is more soft and smooth but all the edges are fraying like crazy after one swim. And even where it was seamed it's starting to come apart. Not good for water.

Another option is to get some iridescent organza and coat it in clear silicone.

it's vinyl floor matting and you can find rolls of it at home depot and such

X 2 I am also thinking the stuff in the photo is vinyl floor matting. That is what Hannah Fraser used to use on her tails.

Do you reckon they use a shredder to get it like that or just scissors?

Some strong scissors should work okay, maybe a knife like this otherwise:
