Pigmenting Dragon Skin With Acrylic Paint?

I know its possible to pigment silicone caulking and food grade silicone with acrylic. But is it possible to pigment dragon skin silicone with acrylic paint? Has anyone tested this out? Does it inhibit curing or stretch or durability?

cool! i'm glad someone will experment with this! it would be way cheaper than having to buy a lot of pigments!

I've heard of people in theater making props with silicone caulking and using oil based paints to tint it. I don't know why that would be their choice, really, but apparently it can be done.

I pigmented E 6000 with acrylic and watered it down just a tad to help with mixing. Worked really well. And there are some colors you get with acrylics, that they don't make with pigments, so it would really be a new gateway for painting tails and accessories.

So I did a test this morning using Delta Ceramcoat acryllic. Mixed maybe 1/8 tsp (probably a bit less) with 2 tsp of silicone (1 tsp A, 1 tsp B) and enough naphtha to thin it down to a little more liquid than maple syrup consistency. Sprayed a medium coat over some scale scraps and left it to do its thing. The color look really good, nice and intense, and was very opaque with just one coat.

Unforunately, it doesn't seem to be curing. It's been almost 5 hours now (demold time for Dragonskin medium) and the paint is still very tacky, sticking to my fingers and leaving color on my skin when I poke it. The bits left in the mixing cup are foamy and goopy and weird.

I'm going to give it 'til morning to really declare pass/fail, but right now it isn't looking good. It could have something to do with the paint itself or with the thinner I used, or maybe acryllic paint just isn't compatible with silicone. Which is too bad, because it looks really pretty :(

I find using a powdered pigment works way better. It just gives it a more opaque and professional look. Each to their own I guess. :)

Doesn't acrylic paint have latex in it? It would explain why it didn't cure.
