Feilian's first (lycra) tail

Today I started working on my first ever tail. I've drawn and cut all pattern pieces and ordered the fabric I'm going to use.

This will be my tail. The main part will be made from fish-scale lycra, the fluke will be made from gold lycra, and the "fins" will be made from gold organza.

The pattern part was pretty do-able, but I'm really not looking forward to sewing it all together (I hardly know how to use our sewing machine) :p

Love the colors, it'll be a beautiful tail when it's finished.
(One piece of advice, practice your sewing first om small patches of fabric ;))

Thanks for the tip, will do! I have done some minor sewing, but this will be my first big project.

Lycra is tricky!
It will slowly,but noticable, slip away from under your needle if you don't guide it good enough,
especially when you try to sew two layers together it'll slide away.

And are you using a competitor monofin?

I wasn't completely happy with the part under my fluke, so I redid that to make it look a bit more like a tail.

Well, in my first post I said I would be making a gold tail... today I started working on a pink tail :p
There is a mermaid meet in 2 weeks and I really want to try to go there with my own tail, but as I was unsure when my original fabric would arrive I bought some cheap fabric at my local market and started working on a pink tail. Of course, today my original fabric also arrived. But I decided I would continue working on the pink tail to kind of make a test tail before I start cutting in the more expensive fabric.

No, I'm already happy I got the top and bottom fin in :D

(I don't know, I only want to do a dorsal fin and no side fins)

Not really that hard, but I had to figure out how to attach them correctly and it was a bit hard to sew at the places where there was fin fabric :)

Well, you remember how I said I would be using the pink fabric, it turned out not to be the best fabric to use for tails, so I started over with my lycra fabric.
Having the experience from the first tail, the second one went a lot better. This time I used lycra for the bottom fin, as the organza limited the stretch of the fabric.
It is almost finished, just need to make an elastic waistband.

Thank you, I was a bit scared cutting up "expensive" fabric (I normally never buy fabric, except for really cheap ones from time to time), but everything went really smoothly, so I was able to finish it in 2 days :cool:

Edit: I'm not planning on swimming in my tail friday either. I always throw it in the washingmachine after I've used it so it stays in good shape. and with the meet-up saturday I want to keep it clean and unused till then.

I can't make it :( It takes me to long to get to you guys from Rotterdam. My lessons are from 10 till 12, I would get to you when you are going to leave.

I sure hope so, hiring a pool guard and a private pool at my local pool would be €70, so if we had enough mers willing to come we could make it happen again ^_^
