So I haven't started mermaid professionally yet, but I was just wondering if there's ever competition for gigs if there's multiple mermaids in the same city, and how y'all would deal with it.

There is competition but it's usually not super hardcore because most mermaids (but not all!) don't do a huge amount of advertising and kind of go by word of mouth or lucky Google searches. If you are just one mer you could always offer to hook up with the other mers and start a little business!

Become friends with them. It will make your life easier in the long run, and you will have more fun.
When I first found out that there was another mermaid in my area, I was devastated (hey Chrissy, lol). We both submitted for a big festival, and my company got the spot since we contacted the festival first. I contacted her and asked if she would like to help me out at my booth and she could pass out her business cards. We ended up having a great (if somewhat hot) day, and we like to think that it got us both some publicity.
Now, there are 3 other mermaids who do business directly in my area, with even more around the state. Honestly though, we're all so busy (both with mermaid things and our normal lives) that it doesn't really matter. We pass gigs off on each other and hire each other as back up mermaids for larger events. Everyone gets along really well because our main goal is making magic happen for these kids. Only one person is doing it as a full time job, and I've already passed off a few parties on her because she is willing to travel farther than I will travel. She's also planning on using me as a back up mermaid for a large event later in the year.

There are a few here in Hawaii and we've passed off gigs to each other in the past when needed and are all part of a larger pod that puts business aside to just swim together as mermaids and it's pretty cool. I think you can be in 'competition' with each other in terms of like your both doing the same things, but you can still get along and support each other, there is enough ocean for everyone, and everyone has certain things they are good at or like to do more.
