Greetings from a Rusalka of Australian waters

Hello everyone,
I've been here for a long while and thought now it was time to introduce myself, I'm Soraya. Like most of you, I've always felt a connection with the rivers and oceans and the species that make their homes within those environments. Seahorses are my spirit animal. I have been a mermaid all my life however my scales have been hidden. It's just recently after buying a silicone tail from Finfolks Productions that I've been able to fully realize my dream, take on my real form. It has been a magical summer for me, so many rewarding interactions with sea critters, humans and their young, so many smiles I can no longer count. As it cools down here in the southern hemisphere, I'm reluctant to temporarily return to my land dwellings.

Over the years this forum and the previous has been such a help to me. I was able to research creating my own tail, make an educated decision regarding the process - my own production plans are on hold for the moment, I'm more than happy with the work of art I now am privileged to be able to swim in now. This forum is a really valuable resource, many questions I've had over the years have been answered thoroughly by making a simple search, which I am thankful for. It's also been inspiring seeing what other mers have been doing all over the world.

I envy you northerners the approaching summer, what fun it will be to hear stories of your mer-adventures. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the progress of so many tailmakers and merfolk and I look forward to interacting with some of you in the future. Sora

Couldn't agree more and we didn't really have a summer to begin with!

When Finfolk Productions first posted a photo of their first Calypso tail, I thought, 'well, they've already made my tail' - it was so close to my designs that I was planning to send them soon; caudual fin shape, colour scheme, dorsal fin. I had already settled on the twins as my tailers and had been saving for a while, was ready to order from them the end of last year, expecting to wait until next summer to go full mermaid. I couldn't believe it when the tail was placed on ebay and the sizing matched me within an inch. I don't believe in fate but... I'm so glad it's already had a few adventures and I can now add to the story.

Have you been lucky enough to dive with leafy seadragons Ilyena? I'm friends with the weedy seadragons around Port Phillip Bay. I can't wait to visit Adelaide and swim with their slightly more decorated cousins!

Thank you all for being so welcoming, it's a real treat to speak with merfolk from around the world and so many Australians also!

Yes, the tail was my favourite as well of all their work, spent days and days dreaming, wishing it were mine (such a tease that I'd designed something similar!). I almost passed it up, so glad I didn't, everything just fell into place. I love brightly coloured merfork; you'd easily be able to make your homes on a tropical coral reef. But for me, colour schemes were always toned down a little and they had a slightly dark vibe about them, a little like a river mermaid or swamp creature that tries to remain hidden. Lots of black, olive, gold and grey.
My neutral tails colouring is perfect for where I live; we have a lot of cold, grey days but still our beaches are beautiful and I just can't get over how well it blends into the sand or fresh water environment, contrasts perfectly when swimming. Oh and how it sparkles in the sun and when submerged - I'm usually in awe of my own scales, get distracted a little! How I would love to live somewhere that was warm for the most part, oh well - determination to swim takes over.


Ilyena, that's too bad. If you do want to swim with some critters in the shallows and you ever travel to Victoria, consider a snorkeling trip to Portsea Pier or Flinders Jetty. Portsea is shallow for a while (2-4m) and there's so much life there, you just have to be patient. My recent weedy seadragon sighting was at Portsea and I was really close to the shore, only 2m depth. There's lots of weed and they must feel very safe there. And at Flinders I've heard of people seeing them just at the start of the pier, hugging the pylons in the shallows. And just swimming out along the surface, you'll still see plenty of creatures on the pylons and gazing down at the seabed - that's what I do when I have a sinus infection or ear issues.

Woo to temperate waters. Went on a trip to Kangaroo Island last year when the water was turning cold, didn't stop a group of us going swimming, though that was when my whole honors group and supervisors found out I'm half fish lol.

I do snorkel, have been for many years, just anything past 3m hurts and equalizing is impossible (yay me lol). -adds all that to the forever growing list of things to do and places to go-

Last snorkel trip I made a friend. He was following me cause I kept brushing food off the rocks >_<
