View Full Version : How does your tail reflect you?

Ashe
05-17-2015, 12:09 PM
Yes, we all try to choose colors that we like and will look fantastic on us, but I want to go a little deeper.

Enora has her beautiful piebald sequin tail that expresses her confidence concerning vitiligo
Celeste has an upcoming tail from Mernation that is adorned with tribal markings
I believe it is Dottie (correct me if I'm wrong) who has a little birthmark underneath on of her fins
(Show off your tails, ladies!)

So, how does your own tail reflect you? Special markings? Modifications?

To start I would like to give you all a sneak peak of my newest tail...

That's right my friends. I am a girl who loves piercings, but due to a common condition that I have, I likely won't be able to get any more besides my current earrings :( I was sad to hear this, but at the same time I started working on my tail and I had an idea! Why not pierce my fins? So thats exactly what I did :P I think they are so cute and i am glad I thought of it! I don't think I've seen anyone else do that...

I don't have pictures yet but I made a little silicone remora (sucker fish) that I attach to tails with safety pins. (I will get pictures when I finish siliconing my fabric tail). When I went on my first blue water dive, I noticed that pretty much all large sea creatures have these guys attached. For me he represents nature's perfection, God's amazing creation that functions as a giant whole all depending on its tiny parts like the creatures that make up a Man o War. I believe that only God could make something so perfect in its self sustaining beauty. The remora is a perfect example, cleaning bacteria and old epidermis as it feeds, benefiting itself and it's host. It's also a reminder that we humans are really good at effing up God's work and that we need to be a part of the cycle, not destroy parts of it.

Love it! :)

I'm an NC merman, so it only made sense to borrow the state saltwater fish of NC as my inspiration for a tail - spot and all! One of these days I will finish the story of my mersona and it will make perfect sense why my current tail is a gamefish and my next tail is...not.

I have many tails, but I think the white snake one represents me best.

If I can find a capable dentist, I'm going to get a pair of fangs to go with it.
Would be cool to flash them through a tank or aquarium, especially if there are other mers doing the big-smile-happy-wave routine :rotfl:

Have you considered getting some made from a molding of your teeth. I have some snake fangs that are exactly molded to my teeth so when you put them in you don't need any sealant and they feel 100% normal and look totally real. They are awesome--I love them!

I have a pair of Scarecrow fangs that I really love - you can get them on eBay. They work the same way as Seavanna's, but they are very affordable (just about $15). I have had them now I think for 5 or 6 years. They are still like the first day.

I thought I was the only "fanged" mermaid. I actually love that the mermaids from Stranger Tides are evil :jester:

You ladies like fangs as well? I am always afraid to wear them in water because I have a habit of opening my mouth underwater and I'm always afraid they'll fall out :( Have you ever had trouble with them?

Well, I don't fall under the "ladies" criteria as stated (Obviously being cheeky here, I know what you meant) But before the mer community I was/am rather involved with The Dark Empire and other similar groups, as such I gravitate towards more the blacks/reds colors. Currently my tail is just a finfun with Barracuda black, where I think the name lends to a bit of a more warlike nature - I imagine the merfolk would have soldiers of some degree or another, and as such am building my vest to match the tail. I'm debating piercing my fin to add a couple rings...simply because I appreciate piercings (in most degrees, some I personally wouldn't care for) but due to my job...uh..metal and electricity don't mix well.

Ashe

Aha, by ladies I was meaning the three that I had mentioned above ;) Definitely aware of the mermen here :)
And if you are thinking about piercing your fabric tail, I think you should totally go for it. On spandex, when you take the piercings out the hole should disappear entirely, so there's no need to worry if you don't like them or need to take them out!

Hmmm... interesting thread. My tail is a blend of numerous colors and sea creatures, with the basic design taken from narwhal patterns, a fluke reminiscent of the Thirteenth Year's tail (a formative experience for me with a merman as a main character on tv), lionfish pectoral fins, seahorse dorsal fin, and starfish clinging to the body. I suppose it is indicative of my chimerical leanings, refusal to choose any single persona or identity or facet of personality, and my adaptability.

What a great topic!

My tail reflects me because of my unusual fluke design, which is based on the butterfly-like cell designs I do for mermaids in my art. :)

My tail was a series of concepts and experiments...like everything I do in life! And while it started out with quite a different idea, I love how it morphed into what I now have...again, like everything I do in life!

The inspiration for the fluke is loosely based on my favorite insect, the cicada.
(Wikipedia excerpt: The cicada is an ancient polyvalent symbol: resounding themes are resurrection, immortality, spiritual realization and spiritual ecstasy.)

I realize I commented on this without explaining mine! Well the one I'm designing is very whimsical and fantasy-like and I think that reflects me very well. I joined this community in search of a little bit of magic to share and I think this tail embodies that.

I'm torn between two dream tails. Right now I have a red fabric tail. It's fiery, goes great with my hair, but doesn't "say" much about me. One dream tail will be painted like a rainbow trout, because I'm more of a lake/river mer, and it reflects the love I have for my state and the native species here. The other is much more whimsical, bright pink, showy, flowy, with lots of fins. Basically, the two conflicting sides of myself. The whimsical, quirky, showboat and the practical, reserved side.

I grew up in Lake of the Ozarks and later occupied a cold creek when we moved away. I prefer muddy, boggy, dark, swampy, stank, cool places. My tail (currently being sewn) is a muddy browngreen to match the freshwater, murky love...but it also represents how I think/know my hippocampus tail looks (from my "otherkin" perspective).

I'm in the process of designing my most favorite tail (my current tail is the first one I ever made and it's very basic, but I love it anyway.) for the Maggie Murpuff character. She's a porcupine fish. <3 I would love to do it as a silicone tail, but I just don't think I could get into and out of it as often as I would need to (several times a week) without causing myself some damage. Fabric is preferred for me! As such, it's been a challenge to figure out a way to get all of the spines I want to use into the fabric, without risking losing them and possibly injuring local wildlife. I've gone through several drafts, but haven't settled on a final design yet.

Porcupine are my most favorite fish in the whole ocean. I find them absolutely precious, and I can't't get enough of them. Maggie Merpuff is an extension of my desire to help others be mermaids at any side, and with any disability. I hope my final tail reflects this perfectly.

This is kinda a fun topic! :)
First of all, my favorite color is purple, so that's obvious ;) I love sparkly, girlie, princessy things, I know other mers prefer highly realistic tails modeled after specific real fish and marine mammals, but I've always prefered a more magical, whimsical, colorful type of mermaid. I'm a doll collector so I'm also inspired by the very feminine color schemes of Mermaid Barbie dolls. Because the fabric is holographic and purple, I stole Raina's idea of naming tails and named it "Synergy", after the purple holographic humanoid in one of my favorite shows of all time Jem and the Holograms

I'm a very dark person. I've always been a very dragony-warrior type woman. But i also really love the ethereal, ghostly grace of mermaids. this is why I love sirens. They have both! i plan on having several tails, of course. But the one I'm working on now will be a combination of dragon characteristics with a healthy dose of ghostly betafish/lionfish thrown in.

And I will be wearing these

These are Dental Distortion veneers, btw. I love them, I have 5 different pairs, ranging from delicate vampire fangs to full up monster. i have no fear of them falling out of my mouth.
and i am looking into clawed webbed hands.

Piercing buddies!! I got my first tail back in 2012 and I pierced the fluke and side fins. It felt very me. My first tail was black with rainbow fins, a color scheme that matches my apartment and most of my wardrobe. I wore it to a couple of pride events at my college and it was a hit. The next tail I'm making with also have a couple piercings but will dragon themed with shades of dark purple and green to accent the primary black body. I've been a part of the Goth subculture for more than a decade, so I'm very excited to have a tail that suits that part of me.

Maggie, your pufferfish persona sounds so cute! I don't think I've ever seen a puffer merperson. :) I also love your little 'tag along' Seaton; you guys are so creative, it blows my mind!

The obvious answer is that the lotus is my favorite flower. The less obvious answer delves into my love of Sailor Moon and magical girl transformations, my respect for the sea, my adoration of fresh water springs, my fascination with the lotus as a symbol of peace, and so much more that I can directly attribute to my childhood loves. But that could be said about many mers. <3

Why would you take it out around kids? Just wondering if your concern is that it could get tugged and damage your tail (totally a legitimate worry, kids like to tug on things) or if it's because you think it wouldn't be appropriate?

Still in the design phases of my tail and trying to get all the details that reflect me and my mersona is proving to be quite a task! I have a birthmark in the shape of a heart just below my hip so I will be including that on one of the scales. I was thinking about adding a few slightly darker features, such as a fish hook pierced through one of the fins, a reminder of a few 'narrow misses'.

I'm also in the fanged mermaid club. I believe that even friendly mermaids would need a bit more of a bite for protection, eating fish etc :P

The most difficult part for me at the moment is finding decent rib gill prosthetics that don't fall off or degrade in water.

Genuinely not tried working with silicone yet so the thought hadn't really occurred to be. I don't want them to look plastic-y though. I've had experience with high quality prosthetics in the past and love how realistic they look - as a result I hadn't even considered using anything else!

Ok cool. I do know that there is something that can be added to silicone which makes it look and behave very much like skin or flesh. That may come in handy. But of course it may be difficult to do yourself if you haven't worked with silicone before.

It's all to do with the mold texture. Silicone is glossy where not in contact with a mold but can have almost any texture based on what it's curing up against

It's so awesome to hear fanged sirens are a thing — I thought people would think I was weird for considering that!
