View Full Version : Revamping a fabric tail using Seatan's method

So, after Seavanna posted her idea how to use Dragonskin (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?10870-Texturizing-With-Dragonskin) on a fabric tail I decided to try it on my own tail. After some swims the fabric started to fade (yes, I know, holographic fabric is a no-no, but it was soooo beautiful ;) ), and I hope coating it with silicone will at least stop the fading.
I ordered my first batch of Dragonskin just this week, and I expect it to arrive next week ! I'll keep you informed about the progress, give details and post pictures. Stay tuned!

Sweet, I hope it works out! it would be awesome if the Dragonskin prevents the holographic pretty's from fading away. :)

My suggestion would be this: Do ONLY one layer of Dragonskin on the tail body itself. I tried to do a second layer to get more texture and it really dulled the texture and gloss to the point where I think I am going to try again. This time I will cut a flat body panel rather doing it on a dressform and do only one layer on the body and leave textures and raised areas for the fluke.

Thanks for the tip, Seavanna! Can't wait for the silicone to arrive. Will do some tests first, though, before applying it to my tail.
The biggest issue I am thinking about right now is how to apply drainage to the tail. As my fluke has three points, I guess I'll try something as incorporating three tubes like fin rays, but that is just theoretical at this point.

I just slit holes in the fabric then made sure to use something to hold them apart when I siliconed them. Really simple. You don't need huge drainage holes are anything, just slam slits in the end. They are small enough they don't come apart and you can't even see them. Just small areas not seamed together. That's what my FinFolk tail had.

Hi Seavanna! I am curious. Does your tail that you did this treatment to have a protective Felt-like material sandwiching the monofin? I want to try your treatment and mine has this beneath the lycra skin. I wanted to know if you just left it in along with the monofin while you silicone the outside?

Today I got my silicone!
Dragonskin 10 medium speed. Seems to be a good compromise between softness, stretch and pot life. Dragonskin FX seems to be even softer, but is listed with a pot life of just a few minutes, and the break elongation also is much less, so I settled for DS10 medium.

Will try it this weekend, although starting RIGHT NOW is soooooo tempting... ;)

Dragonskin FX is effects like wounds...it's super soft.
Just mix small amounts at a time and apply it thinly.
And remember ALWAYS DO A SMALL PATCH TEST FIRST!

That's what I plan to do ;). Learning to walk before starting to run (and try it out on some scrap fabric first). In fact I think of a small test setup to actually measure some properties of the coated fabric. (Combine a CAD program, a 3d printer, an engineering background and a fair amount of craziness :P ;) ). Updates will follow!

Well, it may take some time to the finished tail. This weekend is really busy, and I am not sure if I get anything done tail-wise. Don't want to rush things and be disappointed later.
This weekend is Makerfaire here in Hannover

So, molds for the silicone test pieces are ready, tomorrow I'll make the casts. Aglaia has been so kind to give me some silicone of a different brand which she used in her tail, and I have some Dragonskin.
The plan is doing a plain silicone cast each for stretch and softness comparison and then coat fabric with both silicones and compare that to a piece of uncoated fabric.
Pictures will follow, I can't get my smartphone to upload small pics yet, and I don't want to go too pic-heavy ;).

Yes! Finally the first experiment with Dragonskin!
30462
I tried three things:
A mold (30mm x 100mm x 2mm) made of PLA (3d printed, the small part in the tip of the three samples on the fin)
Fabric with silicone smeared on it (left of my hand)
Fabric drenched in silicone like using a rug (the one my hand hovers over)
For now the smear-on method seems to be the most practical one for the finished tail. The blade of my monofin is used because it is made of polypropylene and should be inert to the fin, plus it should separate from the cured parts even without release agent.
Speaking of release agent, there is another thing I tried: In a video by Smooth-On they mentioned using a mix of one part dishwashing fluid and two parts alcohol. I used it on the 3d printed mold. Well, wait and see how it works.
Stay tuned. See ya!

Just for a quick update: The dishwash-alcohol mixture as release agent worked like a charm! And PLA works with dragonskin, so 3d printed molds are definitely an option. :)

Results! :yay: The experiments worked out really well, and now there are several samples to compare the stretch of the different treatments. The test setup is as follows:
Samples measure about 30mm by 100mm (roughly 1,5 inch by 4 inch, if I'm not too much mistaken)
Thickness of plain silicone is 2mm, the fabric-silicone composite has no clearly defined thickness, just what is smeared on top
Stress is a 500g dive weight
The grid of the cutting plate in the background is 10mm by 10mm
First, Dragonskin ist really, really soft and stretchy, but tough and tear-resistant at the same time. Even at 2mm it is translucent, though milky. When mixing I noticed that there seems to be a lot of gas solved in the silicone (Smooth-on recommends degassing it before pouring, but I haven't got a vacuum system available). The viscosity is thicker than I expected, something like honey. A picture of the cured sample both stressed and unstressed:
30555
Smearing the fabric with silicone was fairly easy, although the holographic print prevented the fabric being soaked when smeared on from one side only. After applying silicone to both sides everything went smooth (and smeary :p). A timelapse video is as good as done, I'll post it when it's ready.
Results: Fabric itself is quite stretchy, too, and the composite material gets a little stiffer (about 50%), but still should be OK. The impression on the images is that it appears to lose about half of the stretch, but the composite material can be stretched to the same amount as the fabric, it just takes more force.
The silicone adheres to the holo-print fairly well, as long as the layer is thick enough! If the silicone layer on the fabric is too thin, it will start rubbing off easily. I tried a sample where i wiped the mixing vessel clean with a piece of fabric, and the holo-print of that sample was just slightly wetted. That seemed to be not enough. Best practice seems to be to actually smear the silicone onto the fabric, to ensure a sufficient layer thickness, and let it run off by itself. And the colors of the holo effect get more vibrant, even if they have been slightly dulled on the fabric prior to the silicone treatment.
30557Fabric alone 30558Fabric-silicone composite
Adhering the silicone to the monofin might get quite tricky, as the blade is made of polypropylene (PP). I used it as base for my silicone experiments and have been able to pull off the silicone easily, without the need for release agents. Good for a workbench, bad for a monofin, where the layers should actually adhere to the materila. Well, wait and see.
Speaking of release agents, in an instruction video by Smooth-On they mentioned using a mixture of one part dishwashing fluid and two parts alcohol. That really works brilliantly, is silicone-compatible and is cheap, too. :)
Well, that's all for now. I'll post the video when it's done and further results of the progress as it, well, progresses.
Stay tuned!

Excellent work Merman Oliver! I'm making my first tail and I love watching other people's progress. I don't know if this would work for your monofin, but did you think about lighly sanding the Monofin to make the surface easier for the silicone to grip? You could test a small area or something that is also made of polypropylene. When I spray paint something with a slippery surface like glass or plastic for one of my DIY projects, I either sand it or use a primer to give the spray paint something to grip so that it won't come off. As long as you are not using a fine grit sandpaper this should give your Monofin a rough surface. Again I haven't tried this I would test it on a small patch first or on something else.

Unfortunately silicone will not stick to anything nonporous except more silicone. It won't adhere to the monofin directly. There are a few tricks people use though, scattered around the forum.

Sorry for the belated answer. My not-so-smartphone didn't show me that there have been new posts. Grrrr!
Nevertheless, thanks a lot for the tips on preparing the monofin, I'll keep them in mind. In fact, I just used the monofin as working surface when doing the experiments because I actually hoped that I could easily peel off the cured fabric samples ;)
As for the long pause on the updates, it has just been that: A pause. Had some busy weeks at work and otherwise have been thinking a lot about how to set up the work best. Didn't want to post here at first that there is nothing new as not to bump the thread unnecessarily, but it seems that there is some interest in the progress and so it's time for this short update.
Well, summer has finally arrived in Germany, with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius, forecasts for the weekend say 40. As the pot life of the mixed silicone would be shortened significantly I shifted priorities: First put up the swimming pool in the garden, then finish the tail. Target is having the tail done by end of July. And best of all, the lakes are getting warmer, too ;)

Finally I found both the time and the courage to start impregnating my good ol' tailskin with silicone. I'm using Dragonskin 10 medium and a paint roller for solvent-based paint as spreader. The workplace is protected by heavy-duty plastic foil, and the same foil went into the tail as separator to keep the front and the back from fusing with the silicone.
The amount of silicone to create that patch (about 20cm by 50cm) was just 50ml (25ml part A and 25ml part B), so that method is really silicone-saving. And as a benefit the silicone coating restores some of the lost shine on the holographic print. :)
Here are some pictures of my workspace:

The first coat went well without any issues, but today it got a little messy.
Tried a bigger batch of silicone without realizing that the separator foil wasn't big enough for the new patch. Had to rearrange the foil with the tailskin soaked in freshly applied silicone without smearing it all over the place and doing it fast enough before it all cures.
Well, it seems that the separator principle has to be thought over...

That's a really cool idea. =)
How thick will the silicone be once the whole tail is coated? And will the silicone stretch because of the base material or will it keep its shape?

This isn't my original idea, I followed Seavanna. Actually there are some more tails like this around (Keiris, I think, did another one with a really nice fluke). I am just documenting my progress and mishaps on my own tail here.
The silicone is quite thin if everything works out as planned, about half a millimeter to one millimeter at most. Just thick enough to coat and seal the fabric and not to rub off. The shape will be defined by the underlying fabric.
The samples I did behaved more like thick pieces of cloth than silicone rubber and they didn't lose much stretch compared to the original material, so I expect the finished tail to behave more like a fabric tail when dressing up and swimming while having a smooth texture on land.

Did another layer of silicone coating. Oh boy... My respect for tailmakers is growing every second. A reputable maker asks some 2500 dollars plus for a full silicone tail? Pay it, and give a more than genorous tip! The artists (and that's exactly what they are) have more than earned it.:hail:
So, back to topic. The coating went more or less well:
Cut the separator to the shape of the tail and inserted it.
Started mixing and pouring silicone, but the open time appeared quite short. Maybe it's better to use slow cure next time (Question to the experts: Can you mix different cure speeds of Dragonskin in a project without issues?).
Modified the procedure: Pour the mix roughly on the fabric, spread it with a wooden stick and even out the texture with the roller. Works quite well.
Batch size is 100ml mixed silicone max (50ml A, 50ml B) at the moment, seems to be a good trade-off between progress and workability (i.e. the silicone curing before spreading has finished) with medium cure.
Room temperature is 18C.
Recorded a time-lapse and will put it online when editing is done.
See ya! :)

You can mix different cure-rate Dragonskin, just don't use fast part A and slow part B. Try and keep ratios even.

The timelapse video is up!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX_ocgGUtzc
The pics were taken with my trusty Hero3, timelapse rendering was done in Blender, including the audio track. The workflow is quite challenging, but allows for a whole lot of options (color correction, cropping, titles, special effects etc.), although in this video I just scaled and cropped the pictures to fit the 16:9 HD format (time was, as always, the limiting factor). Maybe I'll do a tutorial how to color correct and cut especially underwater footage sometimes later on (still learning, so don't judge by the other videos on my channel ;) ).

Making good progress on the coating. Front is more or less done, and the back is coated in large parts, too. With every batch of silicone working with it gets easier and easier. If you try to push it the silicone resits, but if you work with it and not against, it just floats smoothly and does what you want (in fact, much like swimming with your tail: don't force your way through the water, be one with it ;) ).
EDIT: P.S.: Progress will go slowly from now, I ran out of silicone and the new batch is on back-order....

Nice! How much silicone have you used so far?
Not much. Coating the scale-print fabric of the body really doesn't take a lot, but the ordinary swimsuit fabric of the fluke soaks up silicone like mad. About half of the silicone went into the fluke cover alone.
Used up one 0.9kg sample-pack-size (the one in the picture at the start of the thread), and just need about half or three-quarters of another one to finish, I guess.

Quick update on my to-do list for this weekend:
New silicone has arrived, same type and amount as the previous one. Will do another coating set on Friday. Two more sessions at most and I'll be done, I guess.

And as a side note, the monofin course was great. The focus was on an efficient style, and that style looks so fluent that it will look really good in the reworked tail :) .

Well, it has been quite a break I took on that modification. The mental hurdle to permanently "sacrifice" a monofin to the tail was quite a thing, but now the drainage tubing is glued onto the fin blade. I used simple superglue and am hoping for the best that it doesn't interfere with the curing of Dragonskin.
Next step: Waiting until the superglue sets completely, then gluing the fin to the rest of the tail. Hopefully that last step will take place next weekend.
MermanOliver
07-17-2017, 01:04 PM
Well, not sure if using Dragonskin directly on the polypropylene blade of the monofin without primer of any kind was such a good idea. It doesn't stick that well, and what's more serious, I ran out of silicone... :(
On the bright side, the superglue and Dragonskin seem to be compatible. At least I didn't note cure inhibition yet, so that should be a good sign.
But the longer the refit takes the more I am inclined to say, screw it and make (or get) another fabric one. The feeling I get is that the finished result will have still some kind of fabric tail appearance for the cost of tail care issues of a full silicone tail. The only advantage I see up until now is that it is way lighter and way cheaper than a full silicone one. I think I'll finish it, but I'm not sure if it will perform that well in the end.
So lesson learned so far: There is no such thing as "the perfect one-for-all" tail. Every construction method has its very specific advantages and disadvantages, and even the (sometimes - it seems - looked down upon) fabric tails have their place, and it seems to be no small one. So be proud of the tail you have and love and don't think you absolutely need a silicone tail because "only that makes you a mer". They are beautiful, stunning and absolutely gorgeous, but on the downside they need a lot of maintenance and take up quite some storage space, apart from the price tag. A fabric one on the other hand is quickly washed, dried and folded up in your closet drawer. And what's important, even for fabric tails there are a plethora of really beautiful designs for an affordable price out there made by professional tailmakers. It really depends what you want, not what you think you need for being taken serious.
Please don't get me wrong, I don't want to play silicone tails against fabric ones. For me there is no either-or, but just a both-and. But unless you are a really gifted craftsmer (like so many here in the community ;) ), buy your tail from a reputable artist. They are really worth their money.

Just a short update on a really long-running project: Ordered a new batch of silicone to finally finish what I started. I really want to see if my drainage concept works, and furthermore I really want to be able to swim in a tail again!
Currenly only the tailskin needs to be glued down, then it is finished. For the tail being my first attempt in working with silicone, it is a test piece with several issues which appeared during the process and a lot of learning. But it will always be my first tail. :)
Looking forward to the tail's completion, I always wondered how it turned out :)

The fluke is sealed! Just waiting for the silicone to cure, but here is a first impression:
42932
There are several points I would definitely do differently next time, but for my first try in working with silicone I am quite ok with the result. Probably the tailskin will come lose, as the monofin blade is made of plastic, and literally nothing sticks to that kind of plastic, especially no silicone, but I'll see. Furthermore the silicone coating is very uneven, but that is now how it is.
To do: Cut the drainpipes, fine-tuning of the edge, some clean-up work. But there is progress at last!
MermanOliver
02-18-2018, 05:10 PM
Fluke is finished, but still a little messy at the edges, and here are the first dry pictures (swim test will follow probably next Friday):
42936
42937
4293842939
As previously pointed out, it is my first try working with silicone, and there are several points which didn't work out, but I take it as a test bed what works and what doesn't, especially when doing the fluke.
The tail is quite comfy on dry land, hopefully it swims at well and the drain system works when in the water. Let's see, I'll keep you all updated! :)
MermanOliver
05-01-2018, 12:20 PM
So, the final results after two swims are finally here:
The tail feels a lot different in the water than fabric alone
Drainage sort of worked
The tailskin at the fluke separated from the monofin, creating a huge water pocket, but that was to be expected (Polypropylene fin blade, literally nothing sticks to it, especially no silicone). Drainage must have worked, though, as swimming was in no way hampered
Swimming in it was lots of fun and even drew attention to two aspiring mers (I tested it in a pool after SCUBA class, we had a lot of fun with my spare monofin (they are really talented with the swimming style) and scheduled a photoshoot with them and the SCUBA instructor, who brings his underwater DSLR on the last day of the lessons, but that is a whole different story ;) )
Draining and drying the tail after the swim is close to impossible due to the water pocket which formed at the fluke
Finally I decided to cut the fluke open and remove the fin, to avoid losing it to mould.
It was a good experiment, and I learned a lot in that process, but the best thing for my swimming profile will be a fabric tailskin. The whole process of making the tail into a silicone hybrid one takes far more than slapping silicone on a fabric tail. Especially the fluke needs lots of attention.
