Starting a sequin tail :D

So I have this one my wishlist for quite some time, and finally decided to start on a sequin tail.

These are the colors I've picked out:

The gold will be for (part of) the fluke, and the lightest color for the belly part. I haven't decided on a design yet; I wanted to know how the colors came out first.
These are the 22mm sequins from Cartwright.

I'm going to test-sew some sequins on a scrap of neoprene, to see if I can work with my sewing machine.

Any tips/advice you can give will be helpful. I see a lot of people putting a zipper in their sequin tails. Is this really necessary? I've made a (regular) neoprene tail before, and I didn't needed a zipper back then.

The scales are so pretty!
Ive never made a sequin tail before, but I assume a zipper will make getting the tail on much easier especially if you are using neoprene. The neoprene plus the thickness of the scales will make rolling down the tail harder so a zipper on the top half of the tail should improve that :)

Thnx for the tip. I've just ordered my neoprene and vinyl for the fringes and dorsal to hide the zipper.
I think I've decided on a design, but am a bit lost on how much sequins I should order.
Would about 5000 be enough? Shipping costs are quite high (64$ !!) and I'm afraid customs will also charge quite a bit so I want to order enough to avoid placing multiple orders.
Anyone who can advise me on how many to order on the big sequins?

Yay! My neoprene and plastic sheeting has arrived! I can start with the basic of the tail soon.

(Still no idea if 5000 sequins will be enough.. so any advice on that would be very welcome) :)

I am fairly certain that there are some threads on this board for sequin tails, but you might have to dig for them. I feel like they were super popular around the summer of 2013. Mermaid Shelly used to have a few video posts on how she created her tails, but I think she took them off of Youtube. :(

I've read about every topic I could find on sequin tails, but they are all about the smaller sequins, not these 22mm ones. So the numbers mentioned don't apply for my tail.

@ Caspiana: I'm working with 2mm neoprene because I couldn't get it thinner. I think 1,5mm would be just fine :)

Bonnie says 5000 is a good estimate, but she doesn't remember exactly. I would buy a little bit more just in case and also to have extra for the inevitable tail repairs

Hey! I made a tail with the same sequins I believe you are using (: I think I used close to 4000 but I didn't cover the fluke (not sure if you plan to do that). 5000 is a good estimate because you always end up needing more sequins than you think. Hope that helps!

I tried it on and it's a perfect fit. Working on getting the zipper in, add fringes and velcro and it'll be ready for a test swim tomorrow.

Also another question I couldn't find the answer on: Will it lose a lot of stretch when sewing the sequins on? (I'll be using the sewing machine with a stretch stitch)

for your zipper question, I can say that I fully regret putting a zipper in my tail, I can't put it on without having someone there to zip me up in it. Maybe if I were to put a zipper in my next one I'd put the zipper in the side not the back

That is just gorgeous! We actually have mine almost completely seen and ready for sequins too! ;D Yours kind of reminds me of the Pirates of the Caribbean mermaid tails. ;) :) Can't wait to see it completed! :D

Well, the zipper is something I have to get used too. I plan to buy white fabric paint to see if I can paint the base of the zipper white to blend it in. (Zipper came from a motorcycle jacket, really strong and long)
In my first post I posted the colors I'll be using.. but now I think it will be too much like my silicone tail, so I'll only use the lightest tone (white-ish with a blue/green shimmer) and use a darker blue/green for stripes. :)

So, Cartwright has new colors, and of course I had to order some to check them out. My gosh those new colors are amazing!
I'm going to use 'White Lighting', 'Wild Orchid', and 'Creme Puff' for sure. Only need to decide what color I'll use as a contrast. (i want to add some stripes) Both 'Cabana Blue' or 'Lemon - Lime' works really well.

(luckily I still have loads of time, since I'm still saving up to be able to afford all those sequins)
