Mertenders and Safety Questions

Hi! I'm Mermaid Misty. I'm still new here, and I was hoping someone could help satisfy my curiosity about mertenders.

It seems to me as though mertenders are essential; how else could one move about outside the water, get dressed, or stop small children from trying to ride you? I suppose my first question would be, are they essential for professional mermaiding? And if they are, should you pay your mertender? If you don't have friends/family that can help out, is it common/acceptable to search for a mertender-for-hire (if such a person even exists)?

Also, this leads to a safety question I've had for a while; after all of the time and practice I'm sure that professionals have, is it EVER safe to swim in a tail without someone nearby who can swim? And are there any extra safety rules specifically for mermaids, or does the tail just cause extra need for traditional pool safety?

Well, when it comes to Mertenders typically there is a friend or family member to help out and from my experience sometimes its better to go without then to have one. I had a friend come to help me on a gig once and I wish I never had, sometimes they are more of a headache then the kids are. It really depends on where you are going, if you don't have one you can do a sort of caterpillar lift your fluke up put it forward then lift your butt up and skootch. It is perfectly acceptable to pay them, this might be a way to give friends incentive. Naturally you wouldn't pay them more then you are earning or the same amount. For safety It's always good to have another person with you, though I think a lot of it has to do with how strong of a swimmer you are and how comfortably you can move in the tail. Personally I would recommend having someone with you at all times, weather you brought them as a mertender of a lifeguard on duty.

I have several mertenders. My boyfriend is my main one and he doesn't accept any payment no matter how hard I try, but I have two other guys that help and if it's a paying gig I pay them part. They're essential, and without them I wouldn't be able to do this.

I dont ever recommend swimming without someone by you. My mertender isnt always in the water but he's always there.

a mertender has to be present for every event and make sure they are available as far ahead as possible.at all events you should not touch children nor have them touch you unless its a hug or they want to touch your tail. . the mertender should get paid if its a paid event. if its an aquarium event, you need a scuba buddy and have to be scuba certified yourself depending on depth( its always deeper than 8ft)
parents must be present. usually when working with kids or disabled persons, the ratio is 3 kids to one parent so parents must be present. your no babysitter.

I have done jobs both ways....When I didn't have a mertender with me, the event staff helped me out. So far all my mertenders have been volunteers. But if I didn't have a volunteer to help, I would pay someone if needed. Just make sure they have full instructions on what they are expected to do, and not do. If you don't have one, let the event staff know what you may need help with.
