Sh*t No One Tells You About Tailmaking

I'm starting my third tail now for a new client and I wanted to share some of the unexpected things I experienced while making tails thus far. I thought I went into the process fully prepared after reading a million tailmaking threads on here, but there were still some surprises/pitfalls/WTFs. Hopefully someone else can learn from this, and feel free to contribute your own!

1. Holy crap, this shit is HEAVY. I knew that tails themselves were heavy, but for some reason it straight up never occurred to me that each individual component would be heavy as well. Cut to me wrestling an 18lb fluke around my dining room one night, utterly surprised it's so dang heavy.

2. The static. EGADS THE STATIC. I have long-ish hair (just past my shoulder blades) and the first time I pulled silicone from the mould my hair stood up like the bride of Frankenstein. It stuck to each piece so hard I'm amazed I didn't lose huge clumps of hair each time I moved my tail. Eventually I learned to clip my hair up but jeez, it was a huge SHOCK the first time. (See what I did there? :lol:)

3. You will ruin your clothes. I am so pissed that I wasn't more careful with my silicone in the beginning because now there are little spots of it on some of my favorite clothes and they WILL NOT come out. Mixed uncured silicone, unmixed A or B, doesn't matter, it won't come out. The unmixed leaves little spots that just look permanently wet, while the mixed cures and leaves little flecks of silicone embedded in the fabric that sort of flake around the edges and look really weird. Now I "walk wide" around any uncured silicone like it's a particularly angsty horse and I don't want to get kicked. Also, full-body coveralls: https://www.rosiesworkwear.com/category/coveralls/1/ I originally bought these for my painting classes because I'm a super messy painter, but they work well for keeping your clothes free of silicone, too!

4. Rubbing alcohol is your friend. I use it to wipe any lingering skin-oils off the silicone before painting, and for cleaning all my miscellaneous tools that somehow get all silicone-y. It will clean up unmixed components as well as uncured silicone in a snap. It's great for getting silicone off your skin, too, which leads me to...

5. ALWAYS get silicone off your skin as quickly as possible. It itches something fierce if you don't. I get less of a reaction from unmixed components than I do from mixed silicone, but it's very unpleasant and the itch will linger long after you get the silicone off the affected area.

6. You will stab yourself with pins A LOT, even through your gloves. My first tail literally has my blood, sweat, and tears in it lol.

7. Speaking of gloves, buy way more than you think you'll need. I use blue nitrile gloves because they're safe for silicone, and I've gone through over 20 pairs at this point. Some rip when you stab them with pins or scissors, some get so sticky with silicone that you can't get your hand back in them to reuse them, and some just vanish, stolen by the Glove Gnomes for use in their secret underground caves. I rub mine down with rubbing alcohol before taking them off, which helps with the stickiness issue, but you will still go through them like you wouldn't believe.

8. Every second is worth it. When you hold your new tail for the first time, take your first swim... it's magical and I would take a thousand needle stabs and ruined shirts to have my dream tail in my arms. :swoon:

You may have an allergy to uncured silicone. None of it is itchy to me at all--I get it all over my skin all the time. Also, buy a 150 count box of vinyl gloves and then you can just throw each pair away when you are finished with it!

I agree that silicone doesn't come out of clothes! Though if it's just a little bit of unmixed A or B then if you scrub real hard you can get small spots out.

One thing I would add: SILICONE MAKES A HUGE EFFING MESS IN ITS SEPARATE PARTS so just MIX that shit ASAP! Then if you spill it all over your hardwood floor you can pull it off. If you keep open vials of Part A or Part B and they tip then you will be in for a BIG cleanup!

Does the silicone have any fumes or smells to it? My dad is worried that it does because I want to work on my tail inside the spare bedroom.

Nope. Silicone has no smell. Also no fumes. People wear masks for the painting, not the silicone.

I don't get itchy with silicone but I do with shell shock. *shrug* either way yes. Choose some work clothes that you don't care about and use them every time. You can get uncured silicone out of clothes with paint thinner and scrubbing ;) but only immediately after it happens. And not always.

Aw that sucks I really want to try using Silicone i'm so allergic to latex. being an artist I so understand the stain thing I have gross green oil paint stuck in my nice jacket people literature leave it all over the painting room at school. Like a star burst comical. I understand the standing your self thing and burning sewing I tend to stab my self alot and the hot glue gun doesn't always like to stay where it's placed. I wish you luck with the tail it will turn out great.

THANK YOU for posting this thread. My tailmaking adventure has become seriously stressful. I love mixing the pigment and pouring the mixed and pigmented silicone in the molds, but everything else is such a pain. Sculpting the clay so it's just right and won't look cheap, mixing the silicone in a way that won't get all over everything, mixing the resin (omg, I worked for like six hours on a resin cast recently that I ruined by pouring an uneven mixture of parts A and B over, so the second and third layers were mushy. That first layer was perfect, too. It was so sad)! Ugh, that resin is such a pain... Anyway, I seriously appreciate you posting this. I sometimes feel like such a clumsy derp with this stuff. It's good to know that these materials really are just that difficult to work with. :'D

Ergh, I know the feeling with getting it in your hair... I have short hair that I can't tie back, and so sometimes I'll push it back with my gloved hand that may or may not have silicone on it T_____T
I now have a pair of sacrificial silicone clothes, it's easier than having to be super careful not to get any on yourself!

uggghhhh when I was making the seaweed top, i got some resin in my hair and decided it was time to trim my bangs -_____-

My hair is almost to my knees, so it's ALWAYS up. The static, though! OMG! I have a wall of windows in my studio and I watched (in the sunlight) as cat hair floated across the room to stick to silicone projects on my table! And the liquid silicone hold static just as well as cured silicone, mixing it makes it worse and your powdered pigment will jump in every direction except where you want it to go!

I don't recommend it, but I never wear gloves. Silicone doesn't bother me at all. Keep huge stacks of cheap paper napkins to clean as you go, keep an old towel to wipe silicone off your hands.

I'm a lifelong artist so I already have ruined work clothes. Don't even think of going near your work area in anything but your work clothes!

I know the pain of cat hair in my silicone too :( Doesn't help that one of my cats is obsessed with cured silicone and clay, so I always have to be super careful with putting everything away, or it will have teeth marks in it! Also, it seems to attract small bugs to it!

Egads the cat hair. I'm working in a no-kitty-allowed room now, but my first tail is covered in fur. My kitty likes to rub her face on it. Maybe she thinks it's a real fish?

Also, today, not only did one of my cats jump directly onto my fluke sculpt that I'm working on, my tortoise walked right across it and scraped part of it with his scrapey toenails (the ONE time I ever left the door open :doh: )

Once silicone is cured, cat hair will rinse off easily. When it's wet, well, I like to think of it as "reinforcing fibers" ;)
