Finally! Gonna start on my fabric tail any day now!

I have been saving for a bit to get a monofin and fabric and whatever else I'll need to make my fabric tail...and I finally have enough! Woo hoo! :yay: Hopefully sometime this week, or next week, I'm going to get a Finis Wave monofin from this place like 11 minutes from where I live. Quick note: I didn't know that you could get Finis monofins anywhere but the Interwebs. Huh. Anyways, I'm also going to go to Jo-Ann's Fabric and look at my options for fabrics (and whatever else I find there that is shiny!) whenever I get my monofin. I'll try and keep everyone updated as I go along, so I'll need to get batteries for my camera while I'm out. :p

With the monofins, it just depends where you live and what the shops are like. I live quite close to Sydney and only one shop there sells monofins.

Make a one piece swimsuit in the same fabric as the tail. Then it look like you have a full bodied mer suit, and won't worry about how your tummy looks, or hitching up your bra top every now and then. And the extra spandex, assuming you don't get wet, will keep you warm for a bit.

Jo-Ann's might not have a wide selection of pretty spandex. The one here has very basic one color spandex. So don't do what I did with my first tail and just buy a 4-way stretch fabric from Jo-Ann's that was not spandex because it was the color I wanted and I was being too impatient! It wasn't long before I wanted a second tail because of this stupid first tail decision I made. For my second tail I bought my spandex off of Spandex World. What a difference! At Jo-Ann's I was searching to find something I would like. On Spandex World I was having trouble narrowing it down to the one fabric I wanted the most! They have soooo many options. Thanks for the tips! I really like the one-piece swimsuit idea, as I don't like wearing two pieces. I just don't know how to make a one-piece swimsuit. (I've never really made anything like clothing, except for a few Barbie dresses, in my life!) I was going to just check out JoAnn's and work with whatever they had, but I will check out the Spandex World website before I go to JoAnn's, so if they don't have anything I like, I have a backup plan. I'll already be out getting my monofin, so it won't hurt to check JoAnn's while I'm out. Again, thanks for the tips! :hug:

Is it a good idea to hand sew a tail? I thought I had a sewing machine, but I don't :cry:, and a decent sewing machine is at least $50, from what I've seen. Any tips? Also, is there a thread on hand sewing a tail, or one on sewing extra fins/fabric onto a tail?

Sorry, I guess I got a little over excited... I won't be starting my tail for a little bit longer.:money: At least I'm going to get my monofin soon, probably within the week (fingers crossed!) :sweat drop:, so while I'm saving up for fabric and all that, I can practice w/ my monofin. I still need to check if the pool allows monofins. I might not have to buy a sewing machine, though! My dad's friend's mom might have one, I'll ask later, and I'll have to see if she'll let me come over and use it. She's a nice lady, though, so if she has one, I'm sure she won't mind!

I drew my design on my laptop so you could see it better. So close to getting my monofin! Oh, yeah, I decided to get the rapid instead. Size 9 feet wouldn't do too well with the wave, I'm guessing.31606

Another option in top making, is to buy a rash shirt. Just trim, add decorations and you're done!

Oh and sew a wide elastic under the bust, to go round the back too. So it stays there and don't flap open, if you're going for crop top look. If you don't know how to do that, just sew in a bra. With that you only need to cut off the shoulder straps.

So, I have decided to airbrush my tail. I know, it's more money, but I want this thing to be EPIC! I'm going to go with a slightly lighter, non-shiny fabric most likely. The fins will stay the same. I've also decided to not have the hole in the back of the top.

EDIT: This is the method I'm going to be using, except in white, not purple.
