Has anyone used Composimold when making a silicone tail?

I need to make molds for my fluke and fins and I am wondering whether anyone has worked with composimold yet, this might be a dumb question, I've read that it shouldn't stick to silicone but somehow I am still worried it will...? :$

I've seen this stuff at my local art supply store, and it's pretty cool!

I think part of the point of this stuff is that it's reusable (to a point.) I'm a hoarder, so any molds I make for tail stuff, I'm going to want to keep for next time. I don't want to melt it down each time :/
I'd rather choose something that is going to hold details for a very long time, resist damage, etc. This stuff is rubbery, and I probably wouldn't be able to store a whole flukes' worth in my apartment without messing it up.
You also have the fact that it's fairly expensive for a small amount. I can't compare the cost of other mold making supplies with this one, but to make a fluke mold with this stuff will be pretty expensive.

I think that this mold making material is best suited for small things. If it doesn't stick to the silicone or inhibit cure, it would probably be best suited to the individual scale method, particularly if you wanted to experiment with different scale shapes before settling on a favorite.

Oh, and if you want to find out if it'll work with silicone, you could probably contact the manufacturer. Maybe they'll be able to tell you :)

Thanks I am still doing lots of research so that was very helpful I didn't know it was more expensive than other molding making materials :P On the flip side...it's technically better to invest in composimold since its like 16 bucks for a 10 oz thing of it to make a fluke and melt it down later to make my fins. Instead of investing over 20 dollars into resin which i will need a lot more of since i cannot melt it down.

That is a good point, however I suspect that you're probably going to use a good deal more than 10 oz of composimold for a fluke.
The mold is going to need to be thick enough so that it doesn't change shape and warp the cast as you're using it (which is a potential problem with flexible molds.)

If were you, I'd probably contact the composimold people next and ask them if their product would be suitable for this purpose.

Just to clarify, I don't think this is a bad idea and I'm not trying to discourage you from using it. I'm just trying to share the little I know about this stuff.

If you do decide to go this route, I suggest you do some small tests first. I couldn't find what the composimold was made from. Silicone might not cure in it, and it would be a bummer to cast a whole half fluke to find that out. I did watch one of their Youtube videos. It is some interesting stuff! Let us know if it works out. :D

Yes I understand ShyMer, the flexible issue can be resolved with a paper mache/plaster underlayer (which would obviously be separated from the composimold with a layer of clear wrap so it doesnt stick to the mold, for reusable purposes in the future) I think im gonna go for it, i wanna test it out because it looks like an interesting product, i know im gonna make a lot of mistakes so this material seems to suit me more. I am doing this project for the first time ever so i am trying to be cautious, creative, and not spend a fortune on this.
