I have a problem with this trend and I already expressed it on Facebook. My worry is that this is going to label more mermaiding as a gay thing and scare even more straight guys to go at it. People are bigots and ignorants, they judge and assume things before even search and get to know the people. This is not going to make this any better

Make no mistake though, I'm gay and I dyed my hair before. I've been a hairdresser in the past and I still find this trend cool and I respect it. But I don't really like it when some journalist makes it an article and say it's a merman thing. I find this thing to be more hipster-like.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm straight and I dyed my hair green before. It was a nice deep kelp green... for about a week. Then it started to lighten up. I went in for a touch-up and still within days it looked like neon lemon-lime! So we bleached it out and I looked like Guy Fieri! ;)

I think that Arion is correct on this. An this also just might be just for the younger folk. Now I have long hair an might just do a striek an it might not look to bad but the whole head is a completely different story.

Well with that being the case, I don't think that the journalist was being that only mermen do this to their hair. Heck, i doubt the journalist would know about the community. Its like when a girl says she wants mermaid hair. She usually means the turquoises and blue colors that she wants to dye her hair with. It resembles a mermaid. I think that when the journalist describes 'merman' it just refers to that mermaid color trend.

Exactly. And the next trend seems to be what people are calling 'Galaxy Hair,' which plenty of us in the mer community would still consider very mer-folky.

Ummm- I try not to hate on anyone FWIW

LOL- This was Pride weekend here in Toronto, and I actually saw some merman (and mermaid) hair. And it really was mer-weather. On Saturday we had downpours where the water was coming down in sheets. Some of the puddles were so deep I almost felt nautical. Probably the worst weather for a parade the organizers have ever had.

Note added in edit: I looked up Galaxy Hair, deepblue- looks very cool!

I'm still getting used to the fact that just about anyone will dye their hair in such colors these days. I feel like an old biddy all, "In MY day, we had to drive two hours to L.A. for the colors and then we'd get kicked out of school for coming to school with blue hair..." :p Well, my sister did. For pink hair, but by the time my mom dealt with the school and my blue hair came along, they knew to let it go. Ah, the 80s.

So part of me is really happy so many people can have the colorful hair love. Part of me is secretly, "I'm a trailblazer you know..." :p

Like a lot of rustic jewels in hair for merman, I'll show some examples in next post.
And of course, a well designed beard. A hairy face without care isn't cool. Beard face is nice, but only with a good design and in
chosen along with the hair, eyebrows and the face type. I like of thin beard. Masculine but nothing like lumbersexual aesthetics. I'm old-fashioned, never left the 90's and 2000's. My referential of good taste and beauty for a man is Brad Pitt in the 90's and beggining of the 2000's and Tom Cruise in the Last Samurai.

I really like of this haircut and this beard for a man, wish I could make it to myself but don't know if would be nice in my face and how to do it. And don't know if I would have patience to let my hear grow.

im ok with man buns but i dont like the thing it started at my school before it went out for the summer. they boys would tie thier hair up but they dont have enough hair for a tiny ponytail. they would always have a tiny sprout on the tops of their heads you'd see on a baby. the only attempt stopping this trend was my chem teacher who only told the muslim boys to stop because they have to be serious during Ramadan

My worry is that this is going to label more mermaiding as a gay thing and scare even more straight guys to go at it. People are bigots and ignorants, they judge and assume things before even search and get to know the people. This is not going to make this any better

Speaking as a straight merman, I can see two solutions to the problem of straight guys getting discouraged from being mermen by the fear of looking gay. Either we need to convince society that mermen don't look gay, or we need to convince straight guys that looking gay is cool. I'm not sure which is easier. I'm okay with either. Or both.

Echidna

what exactly is "looking gay"?
Wearing colours or jewelry?

And since when did the uniform business suit become the only acceptable clothing for men during certain social events?
I'm genuinely puzzled.

I bet it's a conspiracy- the main populace is supposed to be a uniform-looking mass of labour slaves with no individual touches :p

Honestly I don't know. Speaking of which, as much as people have complained about hipsters in this thread, they're really doing everyone a favor. By shamelessly appropriating style from everyone including gay people, they've helped dismiss stereotypes.

Woo hoo. Since Pride week, when the place was "awash" with people in Mer Hair, I've come across 2 more people sporting Mer Hair out in the wild! (one boy & one girl- plus someone else with Cosmic Hair and another with Rainbow Hair) This is becoming quite the trend here in Toronto, at least downtown.

I don't know if hipster are making me a favor deriding everything they think is mainstream. And they really reafirm steryotipes and exclude people, I see a lot of social class prejudice when I pass in hipsters places, and people being blasé, arrogant, authoritary and exclusionary. Unfortunelly gay people are homophobic too in sometimes, when you see urban tribes who do not accept different people and choose to reinforce homophobia than fight against it recognizing that LGBTT people are not all the same and it's ok, everybody needs the same rights. You can see some bears rejecting effeminate guys and gays who have more money rejecting poor gays, There's a lot of guettos inside the guettos itself and I don't know if hipsters fight it or fight to make it happen.

Aptamer the cartoon is Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love that men are dyeing their hair crazy colors more often now. I think it looks super awesome, and there's no reason us femme folk should have a monopoly on fun hair colors. If hubby weren't in the military, I'd be encouraging him to sport some rad colors.
