Hello everyone, long time lurker first time poster! I just got my first finis wave monofin a few days ago and hopefully today I can take it in the water for the first time.

So a little about me, I live in DFW/Texas. I'm hoping to make a koi fish tail when I graduate up to a fabric tail from just the monofin. I love costumes and cosplay, especially mythical creatures such as fairies, fauns, and of course mermaids. I saw swimmable mermaid tails for the first time probably a year or two ago and of course was mesmerized. I have wanted to give it a try ever since and I am so excited to finally get to take a step in that direction with my new monofin!

Is there anything I should know before I go in the water?
Anything you wish someone had told you before you took your first swim?

Welcome! Before you use your new fin, try using the dolphin kick without it for a few laps. It's a bit of a shocker to first swimmers when the realize 'Wow! I really can't move my legs!'

What kind of fairy costumes do you do?
I do fairies at ren faires and I'm kinda merging mermaids into my fairy persona.

I havent got to prepare my fairy outfit yet, I have been wanting a pair of Fancy Fairy wings for years, I may try to make a pair myself sometime. I actually grew up in the same city as Scarborough here in Texas so Twig's wings were the ones that influenced me the most.

I haven't seen a fairy group around here, we have so many ren faire's they must exsist. I am hoping to wear my new faun outfit to the Texas Ren Faire this year, I have never got to go before!

Oh yes Twig! I've been going to scarborough faire for almost 10 years now and twig was a big influence on my fairy attire as well.
This year though, scarborough hired my group the westwood fairies for fantasy weekend so scarby once again has fairies!!

Without the monofin if I try doing the dolphin kick I just stay stationary or I hardly move anywhere.:$

It is different for everyone when they take that first monofin or tail swim. I was a bit nervous to use the monofin. Once I got in the water and started swimming with it I wondered why I thought I would struggle. You do get quite the workout using a monofin though. It isn't as easy as the beautiful, weightless underwater mermaid photos make it out to be but it is definitely fun and it is more fun then I had imagined.

I definitely recommend having at least one person there with you. I had my boyfriend there so once I put on the monofin on the steps to the pool he picked me up and held me in the water so I could move the monofin in the water a bit and then he let me go and I swam off. I used the monofin in the shallow end of the pool. Once I took off the monofin and got out of the pool, I realized the full extent of my monofin workout haha. My legs felt really weird!

When you have your first tail made, make sure to get videos and/or photos of your first swim in it! That is a very special moment that you will most likely want good documentation of. :D

Oh that sounds dreamy to get to be a fairy for them, or a mermaid although I heard they have changed their mermaid set up since last time I was there. We unfortunately missed it this year, I was terribly bummed.

--------

Oh yes, I do not go swimming alone. My first swim was in our apartment pool, it is just 5 ft at it's deepest but I still wanna take precautions. I think it will be quite some time before I am ready for a full tail, I need a lot of practice swimming. It was both easier and harder than I thought it would be. Mostly worried about blisters on my heel from the stamps slipping on one side.

Scarby also had Ember and Whistle for the run of the show, and doubled up on fairies for Live the Fantasy weekend :)

Also, as one of the original Scarborough mermaids, the new set up is way better. We like it, patrons like it, all the yays.

I really wanted to see the new mermaid set up! You guys were pretty packed down in that little path before it seemed. It was so magical to see little girls touching your tails in the giant clam shells.

We've still got the shell at the entrance, then after that we have two tanks.

Though the highlight of the season was when the unicorn visited :3

There's also pebbles and awkward the fairies that showed up most weekends even though they're not on cast they do end up hanging out with the cast fairies.

Oh that does sound great! I love the mer tanks I have seen. It was especially cute to see her give kids pebbles from her tank for mermaid donations.

I have heard there are lots and lots of fairies at Texas Ren Faire, in all sorta of varieties. Are there mers there?

I will hopefully be in my faun outfit but those special leg stilts are no treat to walk in after a while. :\

There are no official mermaids at TRF.

I need stilts like I need waterair.
For reasons.

Welcome!!
I don't think I've ever seen any full mermaids even being carted around TRF, but then again, I always have my head down furiously henna-ing. It's a huge area to have to pull a person around. I have scoped out possible mermaid areas for TRF in the gardens just in case they ever go that direction. If they do, I'll probably have a hand designing and building it. I already have ideas. Last year we made the new "abandoned church" installation in the gardens and more majorly the masquerade ball Dionysian temple facility. This year is mostly about the new Florence vending area.

yes lots of fairies on cast but no mermaids. I think sherielle is trying to change that but hasn't had much luck.
My sister's trying to make a faun costume for the TRF 1001 dreams weekend this year.

My friend built ours, I still have to practice with them for a while but hopefully I can avoid falling down in them!
