Convincing a 5 stars hotel to swim practices in their pool

Hi guys,

I hope that you are all doing well. I'm going to need some help and advices from you all :help:

There is a 5 stars hotel in Paris, not far from where I live which has two gorgeous pools to swim, one indoor and one outdoor. It's called Molitor and it has A LOT of history. It has been closed in 1989 and it has been reborn recently in 2014. I DREAM of swimming there. It would be the perfect place to practice and do lots of pictures and videos with my GoPro camera.

So here are my questions : how can I convince them to let me swim in their pools? Should I present myself with a book of photos and business cards? What argument can I possibly give to them so they can trust me? How can I make them understand that we can both benefit from this?

To Ayla, I remember that you used to practice in a hotel pool before. If you read this, I would love to hear about your experience.

For information, it's a very expensive place :money:
The annual subscription to the pools is 3.300 euros (=3675$) and if you are not a client of the hotel, it's 180 euros (=200$) for A DAY only.

This MIGHT just be an Australian thing, I called up the Marriott hotel, which is a world wide hotel chain on the Gold Coast a while ago because we were considering having an Australian mermaid convention there at one point because the hotel has the most AMAZING pool! Seriously, artificial reef with fish and a waterfall. How can you top that? But it got cancelled. So I'm just gonna go for my birthday instead :D Anyway, I literally called up and was like 'this is going to sound like a very odd question, but I have a silicone mermaid tail and was wondering if I'd be able to use your pool?" The lady said it was fine, no questions asked. I was super surprised. The rule was I did have to be guest of the hotel so that was a bit of a drawback.

Seriously I'd just call up, ask to speak to a manager and ask first. If they sound unsure or say no, then start working on winning them over.

As Raina always says insurance is often a bit factor with pools. If you have liability insurance I'm sure it wouldn't hurt your cause.

Perhaps offer to demonstrate you're capable of swimming in your tail (you've got tons of footage to show them, and can offer to do a test there for them if they'd like.

That's all I can think of for now, I'll post more if I think of anything :)

Wow! That's amazing! I would love to swim in a pool like that. It's truly a magical place. Australia does have its ideal spots for mermaid sighting. I really have to go there someday to meet some of you :D

As for Molitor, since I'm deaf and can't hear properly on the phone, it's better than I come to them. I just wonder how I can prepare a good speech to arouse their interest. Mermaiding is slowly getting some media coverage in France thanks to the work of my friend Claire the French mermaid but not a lot heard of this. It's like a palace so I better have to look professional.

Last weekend I visited the Blue Stone Dive resort, a rock quarry now used for scuba diving and snorkeling. I mentioned mermaiding and they have never heard of it but they were not opposed.

As to being allowed; if a pool allows normal fins, there is no reason why they wouldn't allow a tail as long as you can prove the tail materials are safe to use in water, and that you are fine in a monofin.

I seriously don't understand why it's a problem to have one's tail allowed in places where snorkellers, scuba divers, etc swim with fins. :/
(generally speaking, as I don't know how the rules are in that hotel pool)

What a beautiful pool!

I would definitely bring along a portfolio with some of your recent professional shots. Also bring a few business cards or flyers (like a brochure) that you can leave with them. Ask who you can set up a meeting with if no one is available to talk to you when you go in. During your meeting, tell him/her the way in which you will both mutually benefit from this experience. You will get pool/practice time, while they will get entertainment for their guests, along with a boost on social media (facebook/instagram).

Before going in though, decide what you want. What is your ideal outcome of this experience? Do you just want a place to swim once a week to practice, or do you want to dive into the professional experience and really entertain the guests? The difference between the two, I believe, is that the first is unpaid work experience, while the latter is paid work. You could go into the meeting asking to be hired by the hotel specifically to entertain the guests (let's face it, this is a pretty swanky hotel, and they could totally afford to hire a professional entertainer for a few hours a week). Both of these can be considered "best case scenarios" considering the answer could be a straight up "no". But I think it is important to go in with an exact idea of what you want and what you're willing to do/not do.

The reason that I say this is that I often get told: oh, you should teach me to.... And they want me to do it for free. I'm a teacher. That is what I get paid to do! It takes time to create a lesson and then deliver it in a way that is going to benefit the person(s) being taught. Knitting is one of my passions, and I love sharing it with people! But it can take a lot of patience and practice to be able to spot problems that beginner knitters are having, explain what that problem is, and then explain how to correct it. Of course, I want some compensation for my time and knowledge. Do I expect to make a lot from it? No. :lol: I majored in English, so I always knew I'd be the "starving artist" type. But I do set up private classes with clear expectations of what I want and what I will bring/do during class.

Thank you very much. I like everything you said. Your opinion is very helpful. Ideally, I want to to do both. Practice and entertain the guests. If it works, it will be a great place to build experience both for swimming and entertaining as a merman performer. I still wonder how I can build my arguments. I like the "boost in social medias" idea. I think they would appreciate that. Especially if I show the pool in my swimming videos. Should I wear a suit to face them with a portfolio and my business cards for presentation?

Ha! About the suit, I was going to say, "I would," but I would probably go with a nice skirt. :D For you, I'd say "yes!" to the suit. It would only strengthen and complete your professional look. If they are hesitant, you could ask for a trial swim, so they can see, in person, what you look like in the water and how you interact with their guests. You could also look up some articles that newspapers have done about Hannah Fraser and her mermaiding career at the Atlantis Hotel. There is also a great video with guest responses. I'll see if I can find that link.

Also, suggest a time that you think would work for both you and the hotel for entertaining guests. I think you have a day job, yes? Maybe weekends or an afternoon during the week would work. See if they have any stats on when guests frequent the pool more often so that you can coordinate when to show up!

While the GAC isn't a hotel (neither is a rock quarry, for that matter) the same principles apply. If the pool allows the use of fins for lap swimming, it's a good indicator that a tail would not be an issue. If the pool only allows recreational swimming, I don't think photos would help. In that case take your tail with you and present a business card, to keep things professional. If they say "no", then ask if you could sit in a lounge chair by the pool while wearing your tail. Be patient and work with them. Best of luck!

Generally, hotels only let you swim if you are a guest of the hotel. Many hotels also rent the pool out to local organizations for swim team lessons, kid's swimming lessons, etc., usually when the pool is not busy.

Look around for resorts with pools and approach them. Many would be delighted to have a mer-costumed character show up to entertain. I wouldn't expect they would offer to pay, and if you are looking for money, they may balk. HOWEVER, you might be able to barter personal swim time with your performer appearances.

Don't go in cold with a tail and a portfolio...call ahead and ask for a manager or an events coordinator and make an appointment. Just say you'd like to talk with someone regarding pool events.

You have a friend who works PROFESSIONALLY with filming ? Maybe it was cool to catch someone who understand the filming of the semiotic point of view , as an advertiser, someone marketing or someone who studies and works with cinema. Take a GOOD video , a video really good.
I study cinema and photography in college and isn't just catch a camcorder and pull the "rec".
Other thing. You must know what your audience values and want to see, You can make an amazing shooting, a really cool shoot but the people of hotel can not be interested, they can think mermaiding is a vulgar variety show, something not very sophisticated and weird for a hotel who maybe want to be seen as a sophisticated, elegant place for a scholar audiente OR
They can just love it and think "WOW we need this guy right now, we should pay him, he could teach the kids of our guest something, or make a show, he's funny". Or they can fink "A merman? It sounds like a dream we could use it to improve our image as a sophisticated dream place".
In all this situations you have few examples of different needs of an employer, if u know what the hotel values as an institution and what image it want to show and who are they guests, who pays they're notes and who fills theyr pockets with money, you can work hard in an shooting or another material.
I don't believe that a portifolio would help you in the first moment, or cards or even a short shooting. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW THEY FEEL.
Pay attention. GoPro have a AMAZING shooting of 6 minutes with "mermaids". THEY DON'T HAVE TAILS, THEY HAVE ONLY MONOFINS, AND THEY USE DIVE EQUIPMENT!!! I don't remember if they use only glasses or a snorkel but they DON'T use tails.They have bikinis with strips that flows in water. Is something very sober but have a taste of dream anyway, especially with the speech of the speaker and the background music, but is more an adventure themed advertising, because GoPro was selling a product which image was shaped to make you think ind adventure and freedom, the camera name says that. "GoPro Hero" =D


Knowing this you'll have what you need to work and will know how to introduce yourself. I suggested you propose IF POSSIBLE , thinking of the things said above, to allow them to use their image for advertising.
A few weeks ago I went to a school of diving behind a traditional monofin to train in house pool and did not want to talk about mermaiding due to the risk of bullying or not be taken seriously. The guy insisted in asks what I was doing arguing
he could offer more specific services if I spoke what I was working and I ended up talking . He told me about of apinea lessons and suggested that we we sought the school's owner if we wanted to mess with photography under water , and that could make a discount for us if we left them to use our images for school commercials =D

I hope you get it and remember You're talking to a 5 star hotel , not a water park. Maybe they want one merman, maybe they want someone who plays Debussy in a grand piano.

we usually get hired by nice hotels for corporate bookings :) it's better I think to get them to book you. Google how to write a performance proposal and make them a package! then you'll get PAID to swim there!

I was thinking that at a hotel as nice as this one, it would be better to approach them with a business proposal.

I never wrote a business proposal before :( I have a feeling I'm gonna suck at writing one but I will have to give it a try.

Since I'm deaf, I can't really make a call but I will see if I can find an email to set up an appointment with a manager.

My Mer-sister and I are swimming at an opening event for a new apartment complex here in Dallas... so it's definitely a possibility. I think some pro Mers would be a fantastic way for the hotel to publicize a spectacular pool like that.
