How to deal with hate for being a mer?

I'm sure we've all had that experience—ranging from strangers to your own family, they see it as odd that you take an interest in the mercommunity. How do you deal with this? Also, if any of you have stories/experiences of hate for being a mer, do you mind sharing them? What do most of your peers think of you?

Show them you're not alone, show them videos of celebrity mermaids swimming and talking in media and such. They'll see that other appreciate it and that it isn't a weird thing at all.

I honestly gauge who would judge me and who wouldn't before deciding whether to bother mentioning it. If they would just bring me down, they don't get to know. They can find out when I've got my tail and am lookin' fine and having the time of my life! ;)

That's what I do anyway. Not everyone will judge you, and those that would just don't deserve to know. If you feel that all of your friends would judge you for doing something you love, it may be time to get some new friends. And this is a great place to get support in the meantime! Yes, Hannah's been on the scene longer than anybody and has always been a beautiful and passionate ambassador for the oceans. The picture of her posing with Daryl Hannah of SPLASH fame always makes me smile. I can't picture anyone but the very dullest wits expressing mer-hate against her.

Regarding my local indoor pool, I have had no issues whatsoever. Mind you, the merfolk sauntered in like we owned the place! ;) The lifeguards been inquisitive and friendly, the staff has been courteous and professional, and all of the other swimmers I have shared the pool with have been positive and amazed. Mind you, my wife still thinks I'm a fruit loop for being a merman but she knows how I feel about it and has even supported my purchase of my next Finfolk tail!

I haven't experienced "hate" exactly, because that's a very strong word, but my dad has always seemed a bit uncomfortable with the idea or at the very least he's unfamiliar with cosplay communities, so he doesn't know what to think. For a while my family has been talking of going away to the ocean for a weekend, so of course I'd want to bring my tail along for pictures with the real ocean in the background. My mom warned me that dad wouldn't want any part of that, so if we did that we'd do it when he's in the hotel room or something ;)

It hurts when the hate comes from someone you love, but that's not a reason to stop doing it, so I just repeat that quote as much as I need to feel a little better and realise that it's true.... don't let their negative vibes get to you: their hate, their problem.
