Hi everyone! I'm pretty new around here, but from my exhaustive lurking I've noted that a quite a few of you guys enjoy going to various conventions, renaissance faires, etc. Cosplay can require so much thought, attention to detail, time, and energy. I thought it would be cool to have a thread for people to show off their (non-mer) costumes!

Here is my Stanley Kubrickian version of Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange. The book describes a very different outfit. I hand sewed the codpiece myself and poked myself so many times I considered updating my tetanus vaccination. Haha! I wore it to Madison's first Comic Con early this year.

Sorry just now seeing this. They take practice to walk in, all your weight is on the balls of your feet, but they're not much harder from walking in high heels. Just practice on a nice carpeted surface around the house while getting used to it.

I made mine. I sculpted them in clay and cast them in resin. The shoe itself is a regular high heel with the heel cut off. Talk about trial and error! I'd never sculpted anything with the intention to mold it and I made the mistake of using regular soft craft clay. Also, for my next pair, I'm going to a few things to make them lighter. The hooves are solid resin and each shoe is 1.5 pounds!

In cosplay, is it expected that you replicate/represent a character from a specific comic/movie/book/show or can you make up something of your own? i.e. a screen accurate Sailor Moon is obviously something seen in cosplay, but if I made an awesome (but completely my own) superhero character, is that something that's done?

Both. Cosplay, at its core, is a free-for-all. It's literally short for "costume play" so essentially, anyone with a mermaid tail is a cosplayer. Where you get into some of the categorical stuff is in competition- at some cons, you have to shoot for screen-accurate versions of established characters in one class; another class could be one in which you need to have made everything yourself; another could be original characters; another could be different takes on established characters (think Zombie Disney Princesses, or Steampunk Disney Princesses.) Competitions are the only places I've really seen hard and fast lines drawn. Anywhere else, do whatever you want :) The best cons are ones that have a good mix- Lolita, Steampunk, established characters, etc. :)

In the hallways, out of competition- literally anything goes. I have seen some shit, let me tell you.

The only thing I wouldn't consider cosplay are Halloween costumes, although they can be used in cosplay. Does that make sense?

You totally should! My first real cosplay was Arwen, and it was such a simple outfit to make- just a bunch of sheets of fabric tied together, essentially. Except I ran out of fabric halfway through, hence the short first layer.

I always wanted to do her navy/red sleeve dress, and her blue/silver, but never got a chance to do it. I also deconstructed her coronation tiara to design what would have been possibly the nerdiest tramp stamp tattoo of all time, but didn't do that either.

It's been years but Arwen still makes me totally flail.

Pearlie, you can do whatever you want when it comes to cosplay/costuming. That faun I did was my own creation. Really anything goes. After years of replicating others designs I've found I really like making something of my own.

My favorite cosplay that I did was my Lady Shen gown. I did a female version of Lord Shen from the movie Kung Fu Panda 2.

My hubby and I went to see the movie in the theaters and when I saw Lord Shen, I absolutely fell hard in love with him. During the movie my hubby and I started discussing ideas for a cosplay of it. As soon as the movie was over, we headed home and I immediately started planning out my costume.

It took a whole year to make and it was entirely hand sewn, hand beaded and rhinestoned. ;)

I have a snow elf cosplay. I kinda wanted to see if I could make a skyrim-ish kind of non-armored character, and she ended up a snow elf. But like, not the devolved falmer you find in-game in caves. It's an actual snow elf who can see and stuff. But I don't exactly have any good pictures, and to get good ones, I'd probably have to go somewhere with snow. Houston does not get snow.

I'll see if I can get pictures later on in the year when it's not too hot to wear tons of layers and an insanely long wig.

Also my icon/avatar is a half-done humanized Shaymin cosplay. The wig is also used for a Bleach OC, but eh. I like shaymin. It's fun. I just have to wear a lot of green.

I love this thread! I just decided out of the blue that I must try to make articulated angel wings that open with a pulley system. Not sure why; I don't even really cosplay and I certainly can't swim in them...but it's burning in my brain now. Anyone ever tried that?

I love this thread! I just decided out of the blue that I must try to make articulated angel wings that open with a pulley system. Not sure why; I don't even really cosplay and I certainly can't swim in them...but it's burning in my brain now. Anyone ever tried that?

I've attempted it, there's so many different ways to do them. Google search will help you out immensely. My own didn't work out because the plate wasn't strong enough and broke in the middle.

I mostly just cosplay as Devil May Cry Characters... but I've also done Moka, from Rosario+Vampire, and a Genderbent Hiruma Yoichi from Eyeshield 21. :)
My Devil May Cry Characters are Lady (dmc3), Dante Crossplay & Genderbend (dmc3), and "Lady Vergil/ The Darkslayeress" (dmc3... 2 variations). My sister is genderbent Dante, and also Trish. :D

Here's mine from last weekend, an update to my old Daenerys Targaryen cosplay! I made a new Drogon out of silicone since the previous one I made out of plastic got broken. It was my first time working with a two part mould, and I think it turned out pretty well given I completed it from sculpt to final painted version in a week! He is completely posable as he has a wire armature inside :)

I got some new shots back of Matt the Radar Technician! This cosplay was so fun to do - people would just walk up to me and start asking about Kylo Ren, and we'd throw around a bunch of quotes from the SNL skit. It was constant laughing all day. PLUS it was SUPER comfy to wear!

I do a bit of cosplay as well, although I have yet to wear anything to a public con (I have worn Belle out for halloween though). My cosplays are more crossplays as I like doing princess cosplays. Here's a pic of my Princess Peach cosplay I've done, which is my favorite one, along with Belle. I also have Cinderella, but I'm still tweaking it a bit.

I also cosplay! I just started about two-three years ago, and I manage to crank out a cosplay once every year or so. Thus far, I have The Baroness from G.I.Joe (as part of The Finest: A G.I.Joe Costuming club), Evil-Lyn from He-man: Masters of the Universe, and my own interpretation of The Raven Queen from CriticalRole/ D&D.
