Making a merman tail

So my first handcrafted tail will be for my husband instead of me, mainly because the finis rapid fits him and is a little big on me.
The secondary reason he gets on first is we have a completed design for him whereas I am still being wishy washy about some of my tails features.
I do still need to do a cleaned up and colored final draftof his tail but I’ll post the rough sketch.
Ok now for the fun stuff;
First we have the tail design and some of the different design elements we have considered for his tail:
1.He wants a “short” fluke.
2.Belly scales
3.Spiky scales (he designed the shape of his scales)
4.Instead of a dorsal and side fins we will be testing reptilian spines down the back.
5.Glow in the dark elements

Once the monofin arrived in the mail we realized that it was longer then the sketch would allow for so I had to change up the tails fluke a little, here is the fluke design:

I have also started sculpting the individual scales (with PearlieMae (http://mernetwork.com/index/member.php?2579-PearlieMae)'s permission), We will need three or four different sized scales for the small scales and two or three different sizes for the belly scales.
I already have 60 scales sculpted:

we had to get our car fixed so it might be a few weeks before I get to purchase the resin for casting the scales.

I had a slight set back.
Sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday Amazon ran out of monster clay :/ now I have to wait until they restock (unknown date) before I can start the fluke sculpt.

on the bright side I am almost done with the tail design, I just need to color it and get my husband to color a copy of the design. I have also started the belly scales and hope to get a picture of them uploaded soon.

Your design is really cool. I personally wanted a scaled belly on my own tail but then when my husband expressed a interest in a tail I suggested that he try designing some belly scales for his own tail and I love what he came up with.

My resin should be here Friday.

Here's the first Color comp. for His tail. It will have several shades of Silver/gray and the green will glow in the dark.
Since my husband is a programmer we thought it would be cool to make his tail all computery ;)

So exiting I haven't started a thread about my project because I'm not sure when I can buy the materials to begin but I've begun to make scales with some old clay. For me it was about making the tail look like a fish/Dragon and some fire but seance I'm making it (individual scales) in a completely different from seen in the super talented PearleMae I'm going to change the color scheme but it will mostly be the same just gotta find a way to incorporate the red in a different way, once I begin I'll let everyone in on the secret LOL good luck in both your tails I love the colors:jawdrop::jawdrop:

Ok time for a overdue update:
We received the silicone a few days ago and did some test scales. After pulling the scales we decided that I need to adjust the scale shape a little bit so that the scales layer better ( we will also be adding a little more color to the next batch) so now I am starting work on drawing out the new scales on a sheet of monster clay.
I am also adjusting the belly scales a little to match the new scale shape and to add interest, thankfully I hadn’t gotten around to casting them yet due to the little fact that we prepping for a move. Yup, just as I start my husband’s tail we decide to move out of our apartment :) I am thrilled about the move because I will be getting a work room outside of our house!
… but before we move I need to finish a ton of projects like my Dragon pen holder and all the little half done mermaid and dragon items for our shop… and the scale sheet for this tail…
On the bright side I was smart enough to realize that it would be way better for me if I wait to sculpt the fluke until after we move. So that’s the plan with that. And I’m clearly stalling and need to get back to crafting or packing.

Hahaha WaterDragon! I hear ya with the stalling! I just got done painting some silicone scales into a blended waist band, set some Swarovski crystals into a genie bottle I painted, and working on a small painting for a client's office space. I have to walk away from it and goof off on here everynow and then.

Glad to see someone else playing around with dorsal spikes! I drew up a design with similar spines a while back, but I haven't had any time to make a move on actually creating it. I'm excited to see how yours turn out.

My husband and I spent a good bit of time making a list of things that could make a tail more masculine or dark and the spines were one of our top picks :) I hope they turn out the way we want them too.

I am thinking about casting them in different shore hardness's to see what works the best.

General update: We just had to order more resin so casting the spikes will take longer then I thought. The resin should get here by the 6th.

My husband and I got around to working on his tail again, and there has finally been enough progress to give you all an update.

We remade the scales and they are way better than the first attempt:

We still need to sculpt the smaller scales and there are one or two more belly scales to sculpt and cast, but it is good to be back at it again.

The Scale design (and sculpting) is a large part of why this tail is taking me so long, I wasn’t satisfied with my first attempt at the scale shape so my husband and I did an lot of back and forth sketching and redesigning the scales until we were both happy with them… then I had to sculpt them...

Over the last week I have discovered the problem with leveling up ones sculpting skills, the spikes I had sculpted and made molds of about a year and a half ago are in need or redoing because they just aren't good enough anymore.

Sorry for disappearing for awhile, we decided to swim with our monofins before sealing his up in his tail and low and behold the Rapid didn't fit him as well as it did when we got it. he did find my Hydra to be more comfortable so we decided to order a minos monofin for his tail... that just got ordered today so it will be another week or so until I can finish this tail but I am hoping to have it done before we go camping in august.
