Silicone!!!!

I'm making some silicone starfishies. this is my first attempt at using silicone ( no experience with latex either) and, woooooah! that stuff is stinky!!

anyone else have this problem? I know when i purchased my tube of silicone there were a bunch of different types available. do all brands smell so yucky???

I'm wondering how people who make silicone tails deal with the stink :P

Gas mask! Get one cheap from Ebay or your local hardware store. I think some brands give off acetic acid. Pretty sure that most MSDS sheets recommend wearing a mask of some sort so that you don't inhale it.

It smells that way because it releases ammonia as it cures. Some brands are worse than others, I have come to realize. Generally, the more expensive the silicon, the less the smell. So don't do what I did and get it from Walmart. That stuff is wicked cheap but smells like hell, if hell smelled like acid being poured in your nose.

At the moment, I am experimenting with neutral curing silicone. It needs a lot more time to cure but it doesn't smell.

I hear it's very smelly and many people complain about it. Im worried when I finally get my silicone tail about the off gassing :p

hmm! okay thanks everyone for confirmation. If the smell is normal then I will proceed. the type i used smells like VINEGAR! which at least is more tolerable than the smell that e6000 glue puts off.. yuck!!

The vinegar smell is acetic acid :) That's the one I used, so a gas mask, disposable gloves, and good ventilation are all you need.
