How To Make Silicone Tail?

My mom really wants to learn how to make a silicone tail. I have no interest in making a full silicone tail, but maybe a fluke of silicone some time. How do you sculpt it? Do you melt it? I really want my mom to stop asking me!

Yeah...this forum is literally full of tutorials and detailed tailmaking threads. People who make their own pretty much read through all the existing information before they start asking questions. It's not a simple process so you have to do your research first, then ask more specific questions if you still have them. Maybe tell your mom to read through the threads on this forum? People here are really friendly and helpful, but no one's going to just sit you down and explain the entire process start to finish when all that information is already here just a few clicks away. Also, you don't have to rely on just this forum either. Silicone is used in all sorts of special effects applications and there are plenty of other forums and websites that will also tell you how to work with it. Silicone manufacturers like Smooth On (http://www.smooth-on.com/) also have detailed FAQ and tutorials on their own websites.

If you look up a few to use for reference you'll see how people have done it. I don't think theobromine meant to sound harsh, and I personally don't think she did. It's always just a bit frustrating for us when a user comes on (not just new because I've done it too) and asked a question that there is already dozens of threads answering because they either didn't know where or how to look or simply couldn't be bothered.

Yes the tailmaking threads will help a ton because in those topics people usually show a bunch of pictures of their progress which helps a lot. Make sure to take notes of the important information you find. Have you or your Mom ever watched the show called Face Off? That show gives you a general idea of the whole process. Usually the first step is you start with some clay (most people use Monster Maker's clay) and you make your fluke sculpt or scale sculpt or whatever. Once you have smoothed out your clay figure you can then make a mold of it. There are a few things people use to make a mold of the clay, but one of the common things people use on here is shell shock. Once your mold is done and you scrape out all of the clay you can then fill your mold with silicone. The best source to get silicone from is smooth-on. Silicone comes in 2 buckets - Part A & Part B. Once you mix parts A and B the silicone starts to cure so you should only mix it when you are ready to pour the silicone. During this time you can tint the silicone using something like pearl ex powdered pigments. Eventually your silicone will be done and you can attach both fluke halves on either side of the monofin and you can seam your scales and attach them to the fluke. After trying on the tail to make sure it fits correctly, you can paint it. To paint silicone you need silicone in your paint. Thus you can use pearl ex powder mixed in with some silicone again. You can use an airbrush to paint a tail or you can just use a regular brush. The professional tailmakers use airbrushes but they also use paintbrushes to get fine details.

That is just a basic summary of making a silicone tail. There are a whole lot more things to it such as proper ventilation, avoiding cure inhibition, molds or silicone getting unwanted bubbles, etc. I still am doing my own research on silicone tail making. I am really interested in the process but I doubt I would ever get to try it myself. Although you can get a small sample of silicone to try your hand at which will help you get a feeling for using silicone. That is usually a good recommendation for people who are wanting to make their own silicone tail - do small tests first to get the feeling of the materials before jumping straight into making a big fluke.
