View Full Version : What is your favorite fish?

MerShellly

My favorite is the black carp, because they always used to swim up to the docks and "greet" me when I used to go to the lake. They're so friendly! :P They usually came up to the docks 3 at a time, which makes me curious why. I think lake fish are my favorite.

But anyway, just interested to see what y'alls favorite type of fish is and why. Do most of you prefer tropical fish over freshwater?

Oh! Some of my favourite fish to see are clown triggerfish, cause they look so silly and cute underwater. I also love seeing cowfish, and boxfish, because they look like they teeter-totter while they swim. Tropical fish seem more colourful to me, but then again I don't have much experience with freshwater fish :p

Oh that is so hard for me to choose. I am definitely more drawn to salt water fish. There are so many that I like. My hubby and I have a salt water tank and every fish we have had seems to really have quite the personality. We have a very sweet Tang named Sunny, and 2 clownfish named Flotsam and Jetsom. We have a couple of other fish right now also, but I cant think of what kind they are. Blennies seem to always be fun to watch.
As far as wild out in the ocean sort of fish, I love sharks, octopi, jellyfish, rays and seahorses.

^^ just for the record; octopus and jellies are NOT fish.

I don't really have a preference, but large, fast fish like marlin and barracuda are totally cool.
So are rays. Whale and basking and frilled shark.
Also, I feel a kinship with eels ;)
Freshwater...pikes and catfish, probably.

Blue ringed octopus. Nobody wants to touch those or say hello!

Oh fish... Fish... Fish... Fish...
Basking Shark! I have always wondered at their prehistoric origins. If they are huge now, did they start out as tiny sharks or where they the size of 6 storey buildings?

These r all great fish!!! Btw does anyone else think octopi and some jellyfish look the same in a way? I never really made the connection..

I love the mola mola but I don't see why its called the "sun"fish...it doesn't look like the sun. it needs to be yellow. wah. lol

I think my top favorite might be sturgeon, but it varies. I've always loved arowana and arapaima, or at least since Amazon Trail introduced me to them. Koi, no surprise there. Basically anything that grows to be big and fat (and huggable looking) like some of the larger catfish and groupers.

Let's see, what else? So many fishes I love. Lungfishes, mud skippers, rainbow trout, pelican eels, hagfish (not actually fish), guppies, and of course coelacanths. I think that covers them all, but I'll probably remember something else later. I love fish so much.

I figured someone would call me out on it. Whales and dolphins aren't technically fish either, but they all kind of get lumped together, so yeah, I cheated and lumped jellies and octopi in there. :) I love eels too! And sea snakes!

I forget what they're called but they look like little catfish. They have thick orange and black stripes, and you keep them in aquariums and they are bottom feeders. My brother had a pair of them when they had the aquarium. One had a smaller fin on one side and we called it, Gimpy.

I like lots of tropical fish, but I am particularly fond of any deep sea (dark zone) fish that bioluminesce. The firefly squid, shrimp, and glowing jellies are my favorite sea creatures (I know they are not fish.) Most fish that bioluminesce in the darks zone have hideous teeth and faces like the viper fish. Still their tails are quite pretty. Blue Viper fish are the color and light inspiration for my first tail.

I had a tiger oscar as a kid we named Bitey. He was awesome, but eventually he got too big for his tank and we gave him to a guy with a huge aquarium set up.

Plecostomus are also pretty cool. My elementary school library had a huge aquarium with the biggest one I've ever seen. He was probably twice as old as I was.

Nautilus! Living freakin' fossils! Too bad the demand for their shells is depleting the population. :(

Anal toothed sea cucumber. It's a sea cucumber with teeth in it's butt to prevent fish from taking up residence in their rectums. Evolution, man.

Moray eel. There is one at the Dallas World Aquarium who likes to have the inside of his mouth scratched. The aquarium worker just stuck his arm in the tank and they eel swam over and started rubbing on his arm like a big goofy cat.

Wow, that anal toothed sea cucumber though... I could make a couple jokes but theres younger people on these forums

Well my favorite fish would have to be sharks. Any kind, really. They're just so beautiful and fascinating, and some are like little puppies when you pet them haha!
Rays, as well. Mantas and stingrays are beautiful as well. I was at Long Beach aquarium just a few days ago and I was blown away by the size of a ray in the shark tank. I had no idea they grew to be that big. I thought it was a manta ray at first, but this was just a monstrously huge stingray. He had to have been at least ten feet in diameter.

HAha!! Yup, I thought the same thing and had to hold back ;)

My favorite fish is probably the sturgeon. I love their sleek, yet almost prehistoric look and their faces. They have that cute snout that sometimes has a little upturn to it.
For the smaller species, I really love the Siamese fighting fish and the array of different colors they end up with. From intensely bright to soft and pastel, these little guys are a huge inspiration when I'm sketching tails.

:highfive: You have perfectly summed up what makes sturgeons so awesome. They feel soft, too. I visited an aquarium with a touch tank of exclusively sturgeon and it was awesome. Barely any line for some reason.

Also, thank you to everyone mentioning plecostomuses... plecostomi... plecos! Those are definitely on my list as well. I like saying hi to the big one at our local pet shop.

There's a lot of nice iconographics that go around the internet (mostly tumblr) that promote proper betta fish care! They're cute and eye-catching and dispel a lot of myths that pet stores support. I have my betta in a planted 10 gallon community tank with a small school of neon tetras and he couldn't be happier!

I can't believe I didn't see this thread earlier.

I have an obsession with Japanese Shubunkins. Like, it was unhealthy at one point. I went from having a 10 gallon tank that was supposed to be for a snake, to having a fish in that tank, then the bottom of the tank popping out of place when I went to move it one day, so I got a 100 gallon lobster tank due to discovering shubunkins need more than 10 gallons (especially if you have more than one) and then THAT started leaking, so now I've settled for a 55 gallon, which is the biggest I could get from my LFS. Just one little fish did this to me. Sent me down the black hole of aquarium keeping. $600 later and I've finally gotten to a place where I don't have to visit petco every payday. :P

I change my answer!

I lived on a boat in the South Pacific for two months and one of my favorite things EVER was when we'd see flying fish. It was incredible to see them up close!

We have a pair of Sanshoku swordtails in our tank. I'd love to make a tricolor tail that looks like our female. She's such a cutie.

Side note: does anyone else buy female bettas? They don't have the pretty tails like the males and they always get overlooked at the pet stores. Then I feel bad for all the girls sitting sad in their little cups and I bring them home to live in our big tank. Needless to say, our tank doesn't have a whole lot of vibrant color.

Mermaid Jaffa

And this too... A blue yabby. Its like a mini lobster that lives in freshwater. They are only bred for the color.

31607

I had one when I was in my teens. The tank was in my bedroom and each day, all I had to do was drop in one tiny pellet of fish food.
Then one day, there was a gigantic seashell in the tank with it and the poor thing was trying to crawl up the corner of the fish tank away from it. When I took the shell out and changed the water, the shell was back! I asked my family who keeps doing that, and it was Dad. I told him the shell still had salt in it and the yabby didn't like it. He insisted I didn't know any better and so the shell stayed. 2 days later, Bluey died. I buried him, yes I say him, in the backyard with a icecream stick gravestone, with his name on it.

That brings back so many happy memories! When I was a kid, whenever we went by boat along the coast of west Africa, flying fish would jump out of the water. They looked like this fish, with an irridescent orange back and clear wing fins.

They usually flew in the same direction as the ship, which made me think they were escaping predators travelling with the boat to take advantage of the bow wave.

These are all really cool fish! Yesterday I went to a Chinese restaurant and went to peek over at the red blood parrot fish (which have now become my 2nd favorite fish, if not creeping up to first). I think my favorite fish, I've noticed, are the friendly ones that follow you and whatnot. They looked like they were smiling and swam over to the side of the tank I was standing at. My Papaw said that if they could talk they'd probably be laughing at me (long story why). I hardly got any time to see them before he told us we had to leave and go home. But I wasn't just like "Aww :( okay. Bye, fish!" I was literally sad, like heartbroken sad. Maybe I enjoy "smiling" fish because there aren't enough humans smiling in this world. :p

They only do that so you can put them out of their misery of being stuck in an overcrowded tank. The only joy you'll get is the thought that you did something nice for them. And at the same time, you get a tasty fish meal.

I've always loved veiltail goldfish, I think they look so elegant, like underwater models in flowing dresses ^_^. I like goldfish in general though. I remember as a kid going to the local funfair (for the first and only time) just so that I could win as many goldfish in a bag as I could because I was horrified at how they were being kept. My mum was fish phobic so we gave them to a neighbour who kept them in his pond. They grew HUGE! and lived for a good number of years until a fox or cat managed to get under the netting and ate them :(.

Way too many to count. I love clownfish for their personality (they're like underwater puppies, always happy to see you), and puffers for the same reason. Bettas are my favorite colorful freshwater fish, with fancy goldfish in second. My favorites, though, have to be cownose rays. They are extremely friendly and can recognize people, as well as beg to be fed. My overall favorite marine animal is the beluga whale (Though they aren't fish), because of the facial expressions and how graceful they are.

Some shark love: Spotted wobbegong, thresher shark, Great White

Alligator gar, arapaima, Mahi Mahi, Butterfly Gurnard, black spotted spiny eel, etc.

When I had an aquarium I only filled it with fish I caught in the bay. I would keep them for a while then release them and catch a new fish for the tank. I had a few types of fish in there but the gobies were my favorite. They were rather plain looking but I found them more interesting than the other fish.

Ice cap electric blue. Used to have one that whenever i walked in the door he would be at the front of the tank loved his color of blue with the whit head cap and tips of his fins.

This is a very hard choice for me. Lemon sharks are quite handsome.

Anything that is mean is a good fish because I can relate to it almost any day. Personal fav would have to be Salmon though, because I am obsessed with their scale patterns, or muskies, because honestly same if I were a muskie i would be prettttty pissed

I love watching any fish swim. However when you got to eat, Tuna my favorite. Sorry I'm THAT guy. I'm just too thin to eat just seaweeds.

So hard to choose, Tub gurnards have lovely fins, Frilled sharks are dopey-adorable and just so squee, Ropefish are like little dragons that just want hugs and goldfish because they're underestimated so much. XD but.... most fish tbh xD

I love anything that comes out of a river or lake, but catfish are my favorite.

Oooo good thread!

The Piraiba (Red Tailed Catfish)
Most types of gold fish
Hill stream loach.

All those guys are awesome but I have a real soft spot for most catfish.

I have a great design in mind for a red tailed catfish tail when I have the funds.

Same. I love catfish. I had a design (I've posted it somewhere around here.) for a red tail cat as well. :)

I personally like loaches and my rose line barb.

Very underrated are catfish! Glad to hear that I am not the only one who loves them.

One day I'll have an outdoor pond large enough for a RTC. <3
