Anne Curtis box jellyfish attack

This happened last year- but I just noticed the news now. Anne Curtis, the actress who stars in the Dyesebel TV series in the Phippines, got stung by a box jellyfish seriously badly during filming in the water.

She had to be hospitalized, and it looked really bad. Her words: "I noticed that I couldn't feel my legs & slowly couldn't breath properly. I thought I was going to die"

The downside of beautiful tropical waters :/

I'm not sure I would dare set foot in a tropical sea because of the many venomous things that are small and hard to avoid. (This way, I'm more content I'm stuck in cold Northern Europe xD ).

The actress was lucky she survived.
I'm perplexed she said "I read up on the jellyfish, and I'm glad it wasn't fatal" though.
Does that mean she read about it only afterward and wasn't even aware of the dangers before?

It probably does, Echidna.

I haven't met anybody from the Philippines, or anyone else from Southease Asia who has been aware of the box jellyfish. The same in India. Even though that species of jelly is found all the way from Indonesia around the east coast of India and on the west as far north as the Malabar coast, the only people I've ever met who were aware of box jellyfish and how dangerous they are, was some people at the Marine Fisheries Research Institute in Kochi. Your average person on the street, even in costal cities, has never heard of them or thought about them.

The people who do seem to be aware of box jellies are the Australians. They all seem to be aware of the issue. I think the media and the Australian government do a good job of publicising the information, including the recreation services posting signs at beaches.

Probably the one positive thing to come out of Anne Curtis's attack is that her celebrity status probably caused more publicity and made more people aware of the issue than any press releases by marine biologists could.

Maybe it is because traditionally, southern asia peoples didn't really swim, at least not recreationally.
The coast/beach was in general to be avoided.
(You still meet indigenous people on Bali and such who cannot fathom why tourists would flock to the water.)

Australia, in contrast, is big on water sports for everyone.

And then there are the scaredy-cats like me, who read up whole volumes about a location before they set foot there, to be able to safeguard against all possible things in advance. :p
