Spent most of the night sewing my tail. It's my first onel so I'm happy with how it turned out overall. Still need to add some scales to the front and spikes to the back. The only concern I have is the blue fabric showing through the white at the bottom. Did my best to layer it so it wouldn't show, but we'll see how it works after swimming. The blue is a little more sparkly than I wanted, but I can live with it. I did base my design off Paradise Fish's Hydra tail with their permission.

that is stunning!
Such a unique tail, it's really pretty! I think those long fins will look really cool in the water

Thanks everyone! I can't wait to try it out. i'm also trying to figure out something that I can use as scales and spikes down the center and back. Might have to settle for some kind of fabric.

Oh wow! I love how the tail looks! Congrats :)
Your top is looking really nice so far- how are you attaching the pearls?

I saw exdraghunt mentioned using a pool noodle to make spines.

I just went through that, but I didn't see a picture of the spines or him mention how they worked out with swimming with.

The spines on my top and the spines on my webbed gloves are pool noodle that has been inserted between the layers of fabric.
They work great when swimming. The pool noodle is bouyant enough to hold my dorsal upright, but is flexible and doesn't impair my swimming at all. Not sure how it would work out with side fins, since you'd need some kind of rigidity to keep them fanned out.

Maybe some kind of straws like aquarium air hoses or lollipop sticks from the cake making store.

Oh thank you! That's super helpful. I'll have to get a pool noodle and slice it up. I wouldn't be using it for side fins, but spikes on the dorsal fin. Sorry I forgot to clarify that.

I used a little bit of pool noodle on a small heel dorsal and it kept it upright, but also consider that it will add to buoyancy...I felt like it was constantly trying to rise and causing me to swim at a 45˚ angle. And it was TINY!

I'm sewing them on. :)
That looks like a lot of work and it's paying off. I always prefer sewing to gluing, so it's really cool to see when other mers use sewing for details like that.

Hm, well I'm already pretty buoyant. That will be a problem then. Do you think zip ties might work? The clear ones, only cut and sewn into the fabric for the spines?

haha, no worries. I'm super late in responding cause i always forget to check this. I've actually redone my tail. Instead of just tossing the fabric I attached sequins and redid the fluke as I was having drag issues with the paddle design. 41699
