Hi all, I'm making a fabric tail and I'm debating on how to close the fluke. I know I don't want a zipper, but I am a strong swimmer so I need what I choose to be able to stand up to my swimming.

I'm thinking Velcro or Snaps, but what kind of Velcro or Snaps? Industrial/heavy duty? Any suggestions would be super appreciated!

Wetsuit velcro. Or the kind of velcro with big hooks n loops.

Or you could try my open fluke design. I use it for all my tails.

Ok, where do I find wetsuit velcro? I would do the open fluke design, but I don't think it'll work with my design/swim style/ monofin will show.

Distract the showing of monofin with a tail wriggle.

You'd want heavy duty velcro tape, this is the kind with big loops, as you will be hand sewing it on. Its easier to arrange each stitch by hand sewing, for it to sit between the loops and hooks.
You can use straight stitch but I've yet to use that for swimwear fabric, so I don't know how stretchy it'll be when you stuffing in your monofin.

The other kind that you find in dressmaking shops, when you sew the zigzag stitch, the stitches will squash the velcro and it won't be as effective to stick the two sides together. I know I tried it and no matter how I tried to arrange each stitch, it didn't stick much.

I know that people use a straight stitch when sewing stretchy fabrics but personally it offends my sewing sensibilities to use anything other than a zig-zag or overlock stich on anything stretchy or needs to stand up to punishment or both.
I'm also slightly terrified both my grandmother's would come back from the grave to slap the bejeesus outta me for doing it.
They were both a 'battleaxe of a woman'.
