Long story short my legs don't work well on land. I went into a sport store with fins and found a monofin that fit well. I said to the guy I wish I could try it out.

He says we have a pool in the back with this fin for the scuba classes. He warned me that pool was deep 20ft. I laughed and said I can swim. (I happen to be wearing a tight tank and cotton shorts so I decided to try them out. (The guy behind the counter was concerned because I use a walker)

One of the scuba guys got in to help me put them on and I let myself go in the water. I kicked a few times and then I went for it.

I pushed my way to the bottom turned around and swam as hard and as fast as I could. I shot completely out of the water and did a back flip back in. I felt alive I felt whole again. It did not matter that my legs don't work well.

My wife laughed with delight and the guy in the pool asked how I could do that. I said because I'm a mermaid.

The guy at the counter came running in to see what the splashing was about. I did a few more tricks (wife recording this time) I bought my monofin and went home feeling like a brand new person.

The best part was a lady that saw me using a walker she looked at her walker grabbed my hand and said thank you for bringing hope. Maybe I can swim like you. I said anyone can be a mermaid.

Aww, that's awesome!!! I'm sure that lady's not the first person you'll bring hope to! Are you going to post the video your wife recorded?? I would love to see you do your tricks!!! :D

That is so cool. I think that's one of the best things about mermaiding; it shows people that you really can go for your dreams in this world.

That's such an inspiring story :) I think it sums up perfectly why mermaiding is awesome and anyone who says it's 'stupid', 'childish' or 'evil' clearly needs to read THIS story

The funny things is I got si involved that I did not even realise there was a crowd around the pool.

I got sick 3 years ago at 33 I thought an active life was over but now I can be active again. It feels amazing.

Funny how being "in the zone" makes everything around you fade away, isn't it?

That gives me hope, too. I have a joint disorder that has limited my flexibility my entire life, and is just getting progressively worse as I enter my thirties. I'm hoping mermaiding, alongside my hula hooping, will help keep me active and moving.

Most people don't believe that I'm the one swimming in a tail as I hardly can walk. Then I tell them that I use my body to swim like that and not my legs, then some of them chance there mind.
