A few weeks ago, I went to my nurse practicioner(sp?) for my annual checkup, and there was a young student NP there. She asked about my interests, so I mentioned cosplay. She wasn't familiar with the term so I listed a few costumes I owned, including of course my mermaid tail. It turns out she's a mer too, with a Mertailor tail, and is FB friends with Iona. Have you ever met a stranger who by sheer coincidence turns out to be a mer too?

This JUST happened to me. On of my friends mentioned he knew another mer. It turned out that it was an artisan I'd met at Mythic Worlds. I knew her as a faerie, and she knew me as a faun, but we had no idea about each others mer-ness, lol!

That's so awesome. I would love to just meet some random person who's into mermaiding. I mean manager at work fb stalked me and turns out he's really into mermaids but didn't realise it was a thing, so that's kinda cool

Wow that is very ironic!
Recently I saw a little girl looking at me swimming in my tail and I don't know how but I got the feeling she might be a mermaid or at least knew about mers - after I swam around a little and sat on the dock she started telling me how she is a mermaid and swims around with other mermaids for special events. It was really cool she was telling me about their tails and monofins. Actually it was the first time I was able to talk with someone in person who knew about mer stuff.

I hope to meet another random mer someday. It was quite fun to be surprised!:)

I had the craziest random mermaid encounter last year! My husband and I went to Panama last September for our belated honeymoon. We spent a week in a very tiny remote little village called Santa Catalina, on the Pacific coast near Isla Coiba, which is a large island surrounded by a huge marine reserve. The area is very secluded but renowned for surfing and diving and hasn't yet become very touristy. So of course I wanted to go there because diving. Anyway, our first day trip out, we went for our morning dives and then stopped on a tiny uninhabited islet for lunch. This was with a small dive operator and a very small boat with just a few other divers; including a British couple who were maybe late 30s early 40s (I'm terrible with ages but that's my best guess). Anyway, as we were having lunch, the British woman saw my long braid and said "wow, your hair is so long, you could be a mermaid!" So I just turned around and said "I AM a mermaid!" and she looked at me kinda funny and asked what I meant by that, so I started explaining how I had a prosthetic silicone mermaid tail with a monofin which is made for swimming in blah blah and she stopped me and said "no, no, I'm a mermaid too!" Turns out she not only has a couple of Mertailor silicone tails, she and her husband live in Turks and Caicos and teach scuba and freediving, and they own a tour company with a glass-bottomed boat where she does "mermaid encounters" as Bella the Mermaid! How random and crazy is that?! So of course she and I started talking mermaidy stuff, and our husbands looked at each other and were like "living with a mermaid, yeah, it's interesting" haha. Anyway, they've got a facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CaicosTours?fref=ts) and a website (linked from the page) and I really want to go down to Gran Turk and take a freediving course from Mermaid Bella!

I wish. I've only found mers online. I just happened to meet a couple mers who are also in furry fandom, at our local meets. I loudly asked among this group of 100 furries if anyone was into mermaids, and only one person answered. But, they are furries first and aren't too active in mermaiding.
