My Vintage Fashion Doll Collection

I have been an avid doll collector almost my whole life, with the main focus of my collection since my late teens being vintage Barbie-type fashion dolls from the late '50s to the late '80s. I have bought some on eBay, but most of my dolls and fashions actually come from thrift stores and doll shows. I go to a big doll show in Puyallup at least once a year, and year round I look for dolls in thrift stores. I don't buy dolls nearly as often as I once did though, as both space and money are limited. It seems now every doll show I end up buying less than I did at the last show. Photos by my bestie Lisa:

I have two cabinets that keep my plastic pals mostly dust-free. I thought of getting a third but I decided instead the moment when I can no longer squeeze a single girl in there is the moment I finally have enough dolls ;). I have the dollies in the bigger cabinet organized roughly by era. Top shelf: mainly Barbie family dolls circa 1959-early 1960s. Second shelf: mainly Barbie family early-mid '60s. Third shelf: mainly Barbie family mid-late '60s. Fourth shelf: mainly Barbie family early '70s. Fifth shelf: mainly Barbie Family mid-to-late '70s. This cabinet is for mostly non-Barbie fashion dolls. Top shelf: a few miscellaneous newer dolls, Kenner Darci(1979-1981) and Hasbro Jem(1986-1987). Second shelf: mostly Hasbro Jem. Third shelf: Topper Dawn(1969-1973) and mostly other smaller vintage dolls. Third shelf: mostly Topper Dawn and similar-sized dolls. Four shelf: Hasbro Maxie(1988-1990), Ideal Tammy(1962-1966), Mattel She-Ra(mid-'80s), Galoob Golden Girl(mid-'80s), and Mattel Dazzle(early '80s). Botton shelf: MGA Bratz(early to mid '00s) and miscellaneous newer dolls.

How was I able to acquire such a large collection which includes dozens of dolls older than I am relatively cheaply?
*Finding a nice vintage doll in a thrift store is very much a hit or miss to be sure, but by no means impossible. Over the past several years I have found several dolls 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s dolls sold in the toy section of thrift stores for almost nothing. It feels very rewarding to give an old doll who might've otherwise ended up in a landfill a good home! :)
*I have attended two Topper Dawn doll conventions, one in Seattle in 2005 and the other in Vancouver, BC in 2007, and both times I had good luck in the giveaways and raffle and ended up bringing home bags of vintage Dawn goodness for free.
*I'm not nearly as picky about condition as I know many vintage collectors are. There's a lot of flaws that can bring the value WAY down, so dealers at doll shows charge less, that are not terribly noticeable to the naked eye. For example, green knees, a common problem for many vintage Barbie-style dolls, can easily be covered up by clothing and no one would ever know looking at my cabinet. Fashions are worth less when they're missing the original shoes or accessories, but I don't really mind when I have own a different pair of shoes that'll match too ;). The way I look at it, many of those flaws are pretty much inevitable anyway, it's extremely rare to find an old doll or fashion that looks like it just rolled off the assembly line yesterday. The quirks and flaws that come with age can sometimes actually add to that special vintage-y vibe that you just don't get with modern dolls.
*Acquaintances have actually given me their childhood Barbie collections when they find out I was a collector ;)!

Very nice collection! I used to collect Barbies while I was in school, but I'm not sure what happened to them- they're probably still in the garage someplace. My great aunt collected dolls too, and my sister does, although not as much anymore, and she's really into porcelain dolls vs. fashion dolls. Aunt Doris left her some gorgeous dolls when she died. I'll have to show my sister these pictures :)

This study is interesting. It seems it's best to try to keep vintage toys in the hands of adult collectors and out of the hands of young children. I would be reluctant to let a young child handle my dolls. Toy safety regulations were pretty much non-existent a few decades ago, and I've noticed a few things about my old dolls that would not certainly pass muster for toy safety today. Circa late 1960s Barbie dolls used wire for bendable knees that can poke through the vinyl and pierce skin if not handled carefully. I once bought an early '90s Teen Talk Barbie at a thrift store with the batteries still in her, and got concerned about the batteries leaking toxins. I'm very sensitive to scents and chemicals, so I try to avoid buying dolls that are scented for my collection, the combination of plastics and chemical scents seems like a recipe for toxicity.
