My very first Neoprene tail...

Oh boy. XD

So, I got the fabric... Got it sewn (more or less no problems. >> ) EVERYTHING FITS! 8D *SPAZZES like a mad fish*


Now I have to paint it. *falls over*

I want it to look good, though, but I fail at that. The scales I can do pretty well. :3 I'm just doing the regular small/medium round scales. Using a stencil and Tulip fabric paint. It's the only paint they had. DX Urg...


Well, I'm going to see if my roommate'll let me use her camera for progress pictures, but I'm starting the painting tomorrow!

Any tips for it?

I'm still stuck on how to do the fluke and the transition from scales to fluke. *flails*

That is awesome!! You are an excellent artist so I bet you could just free-hand the transition scale area :) Just don't have too much coffee, LOL! ;) I think it is smart if you are doing a wrap-around design to sew it first. On my koi tail I had to do to that way, but it really helped in making sure the lines matched up. Best of luck to you and I can't wait to see your creation!

That's great :) Well I'm painting my old tail and What I was gonna do is just taper the scales off to a point then start the fluke from there. I was looking at our fish and it's actually really rounded if you'd like to try that as well :)

I've tried looking at my beta.... But he's practically black! CX So, I was going to look up pictures today. I was thinking of doing larger scales for the dorsal area and the belly... But I'm not sure.

Or I can just go with all the same size, same shape.

Aaaaaaaand now I have to deal with the fact that my tail is too short. DX My monofin sticks out the bottom... I'm talking to freckled Kisses about it and she says to do a butt extension, but (no pun intended) then it falls away from my back considerably when I sit up. DX URG I have no idea what I'm doing. @.@

I thought about doing a fluke extension and just hope to the sea gods that I can paint out the seam.

Move the extension to the top like freckled suggested and extend the tail to the height of your belly button. Make it to your measurements so it is nice and tight, then you shouldn't have any gaping. If it pulls down in the back it "should" stay tight as it is sized to your smallest measurement (your waist).

ShyMer - I don't quite get what you're talking about, but I'd be interested to figure it out. :-) It sound awesome. I will be adding the gold to the dorsal, though. ^_^ I just didn't have time this time round. @.@ I barely got the scales on in time.

Fix the look of the fluke, make it more realistic. (I'd love some tips on how to paint it that way! ^_^)

First picture I have of it. XD

The other mermaid is Sam, she's brand new! She got her tail as a birthday present and was planning on only wearing it dry, but she saw me in the pool and I convinced her to come in. She didn't want to leave! She had so much fun!

Her tail is a Mertailor tail. >> And the paint on her knees, fluke and by her waist rubbed off so quickly! D: I felt bad... But she had tons of fun and should be joining this forum soon. So, prepare for a lot of pictures with her in it. ^_^

It was great not being alone in the pool, mermaid wise. There were a few other swimmers. XD

It looks wonderful! I like the idea of a bit of gold on the dorsal. It would definitely help pull the fluke together with the tail. :3 And I can't wait for your friend to join! I feel bad about her tail though.

It looks amazing <3 For tips on the dorsal, look at a picture of a real fish as a ref. The lines are more gradual and generally are more dramatic in difference of values :) Hope that helps

I used the Finis wave. :3 When I have the money I'll get a competitor. ^_^ Finis was just a good beginner option and the more budget friendly option.

I tried making the dorsal scales much brighter than the rest of the tail. I still have a lot to add to the dorsal part. ^_^

Another thing with the tail:

SUPER BUOYANCY! Hahaha I could finally float! I'm so used to sinking like a rock in water. It was nice being able to just float on my back and relax.

I know I'm late (WAY late) in responding. The dolphin sound, sadly is damaged at the moment. People at work found out I could make it and just asked all the time... now it's really difficult to do. I can still do clicking and sea lion sounds, but the higher range for the dolphin is a bit shot. I'm working on getting it back slowly, but recently I've had trouble with my upper register and I get a gagging feeling when I try to do anything in that range.

Love ya all! I don't know if I'll be returning as a mermaid to ALA this year... I'm hoping I can, but it depends on a lot of things.
