2nd spandex tail finished, much easier than the first

So, with getting a new monofin that is much larger than the first (got a rapid this time) I had to make a new tail to fit the new fin. Instead of 6 wks this one only took 2 from start to finish. The biggest change in this one is that I chose not to line it like I did the first one. What a huge difference in working with the fabric. I did, however, make a sleeve for the monofin out of the liner fabric, so the monofin won't show through the spandex. Other changes... I used velcro to close the fluke opening (so the fin is removable) instead of snaps this time (plastic snaps didn't stay closed when in the water), and I "painted" the scales on with gold metallic sharpie markers instead of fabric paints.
I'm not thrilled with the color of the scales, but it will do for a few weeks just to get me through the meetup and then I have all fall/winter to figure out what to use as an alternative to the sharpie markers. It took 8 metallic sharpie markers to do the full tail because they dry out somewhat quickly compared to the regular sharpies, total cost for the markers was about $12, so can't really beat that for a tight budget.

I am looking for suggestions to use for repainting this tail after the meetup is over. I would like a brighter gold and to add some white. I have tried fabric paints on scrap pieces of this fabric but they either don't show up on the dark fabric or they crack. I was using lumiere paints. They don't crack if watered down (the white) but then it doesn't really show up, looks awful. I am considering trying a nail polish on some of the scrap fabric to see what happens... has anyone ever tried that?

Anyway, here's the 2nd tail. I'll be taking it for it's maiden swim tomorrow evening so I have time to make any changes/repairs before the meetup. I'll share video/pics of the maiden swim when I get them. :-)

Maybe Speedball Screen Printing inks? They don't come in metallic, but you could mix some gold pigment powder into the yellow ink to get a bright gold.

Nice! I couldn't find any metallics last time I looked at them.
The inks arrived today and I am so happy I could hug you (cyber hugs!!!)! This was the answer to all that ailed me with my paint issues and I am hooked on these screen printing inks for anything spandex now. They stay soft and flexible so no cracking... stretch with the fabric. After heat setting a sample piece I tried scratching it off with my fingernails... it didn't go anywhere. Soft nylon bristle brushes seem to work the best and coverage has to be a bit thick, but that's easy to do because this stuff is very thick and "creamy" so a little bit goes a long way for projects like mine. Darker fabric will need the opaque and metallic colors to show up decent, but I am eager to order some more colors now for the modification of my red tail over the winter.

Anyways, these inks are awesome! After the meetup is over I will come back to this tail and add pearl white into the scales somehow/somewhere, so it goes perfectly with the matching top I just finished last night. At some point I may use some of these paints on the top, too. More bead work is planned on that over the winter when I'm not in a rush to finish it. I figured it would do for the meetup. The original top I transformed was last yr's Walmart $8 clearance special, plain black tankini top. The black fabric around the waist of the top is still under all of the fringe and tucks nicely into my tail to help hold it secure and make sure I don't have any bare belly moments while out in public, lol.

Thanks Calaeno! The first side is almost finished, expect to be done and starting on the flip side tonight. Due to a family emergency that happened today I'm not sure if I will meet my deadline to be able to test swim this stuff this coming weekend (last chance before the meetup) but I will give it my best shot and post pic/video if I can. I am so happy with this paint job that I am not even minding the hard work it has turned out to be. I am also going to use some of the screen printing ink to make my husband a mer-tender tshirt to match me at the meetup. :) Green tshirt, then the gold and pearl white ink for the print & logo I designed the other night. With any luck I might spend this winter making mer-tender tshirts to order. That would be a blast and help fund the modifications needed for my red tail. I wish I could afford to order more colors (at least primary colors) and start my red tail right away too, lol.

I knew what I wanted for color scheme, from the minute I picked out the fabric, but finding affordable supplies to pull it off has been a struggle. This is turning out to be the exact result I was looking for. I can't wait to finish and see how it looks in the water... it's going to be amazing.

Party's over... 1 trip to the lake left me with major paint repairs with the screen printing ink. It rubbed off in various spots, so some areas have no scales at all and will have to be redone. It also flaked into the water, which isn't cool. I will be making a neoprene tail over the winter so will see if the screen printing ink adheres better to that. It worked very well on hubby's mertender tshirt. I am also toying with the idea of using a thin layer of aquarium silicone to cover a neoprene and spandex tail, nothing thick like I see others who are wanting silicone tails, just a light coating enough to get a little bit of texture that I can highlight with my airbrush and then another very thin coat to seal it all in. We'll see what Santa brings for supplies aside from the neoprene this winter, lol. When the time comes I will start another thread and post pics and talk about if it did/didn't work and etc.

In the meantime I am saving to get a bottle of fabric paint medium and am going to try that. I found one that is supposed to turn the paint more into a dye/stain, which is the basic concept of what I've been searching for in my chosen/needed colors. I'll post about that when I try it too.

There was no way to know until it was tried. At least now we know. I will just keep trying until I find something that does work & hold up. At least I'm identifying WHY these paints aren't working... which will help lead to a fix. At present I am assuming it's the texture of the spandex fabric that is causing the problem. Nothing really sticks well to it and haven't yet found anything that will "soak in" like a dye/ink/stain (in the colors I need). Thus far, the paints I've tried all sit on top of the fabric as an extra layer/coating without absorbing into the fabric. The spandex has a "shiny" side to it, which is the side that gets painted. Spandex doesn't tolerate heat well for heat setting. And then there is the stretch factor... 4 way stretch.
There is a way to do this... I just have to find it. I'll be experimenting with aquarium silicone & aquarium safe silicone caulk over the winter and more come spring. I will also be making a neoprene tail over the winter and from everything I have read, fabric paints work much better/easier on neoprene.
Trial & error is how we learn and I have learned a LOT this year. :-)

The problem with dyeing spandex is that it can't take the heat needed to set the paint/dye without damaging it, and chlorinated water further breaks down the polymeric chains that give spandex its stretch...The inks in Sharpies, especially the metallic ones, will also degrade the stretchy fiber, and you could end up with holes everywhere you've drawn on the fabric. :(

Screenprint inks and acrylic paints with the additives for fabric are still basically a layer of plastic that will absorb into the cotton of cotton-spandex blends, but will crack and flake off polyester/nylon-spandex blends. It just can't take the stress/extreme stretch a mermaid tail has to endure.

I'm thinking that, if you have the time and want to make the effort, some of the dimensional fabric paints (Tulip comes to mind) could be effective if you rendered your design in tiny dots all over the fabric, rather than lines or broad swaths of coverage...think Georges Seurat's pointilism. If you have the spandex stretched, even slightly, the dots of paint will work their way into the gaps of the knit and be less likely to flake or peel.

My tail has never (probably will never) seen a chlorinated pool. The only pool around here that would let me use my fin is inaccessible because of their hours and demands that I not use the same fin for indoor & outdoor use, and I currently don't have the fin I need for indoor use.

It's always worth a shot on some scrap material! And swimsuit material is almost all spandex based, but they don't count on anyone using the same swimsuit for more than a year or two. A tail is a significant investment that you want to last more than one summer.
