View Full Version : Nim's Tailmaking Disaster-Diary

...or not so disasterous. We'll see! :D
I'm very excited to be doing this! Here's the first entry of my tailmaking diary. Somehow youtube completely butchered my voiceover - So I apologise if it tortures your speakers or if you can't understand a word... which is more likely. The next one will be much better I promise.
(In case the resolution won't go above 360 that might be because it's still uploading. I was so excited I couldn't wait with the posting *noob*)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVtVb-Crr-I
Comments and suggestions about the design are always welcome! I know there are many skilled tail designers out there, so if you feel inspired please feel free to share! I'd love to see if I can recreate it in the flesh... scale. :)

I'm sure it will turn out amazing. watching your video I had to laugh, the Alligator type scales you drew are similar to the scales I have sketched out for my tail.

Thank you Mermanda! I'm super pleased you like it :) I think someday I'd love to make a tail for an Asian or Asian inspired mermaid/-mad and go totally nuts on the koi-theme.
Thank you too SeaGlass! Glad my babbling is somewhat enjoyable! :)
I'll do my best to up a new episode soon. Working on my claymodels as I type this. (I've never really worked with clay before; so much fun!)

I LOVE the second scale patch (the translucent one), the colors are exactly what I want in my tail and the placement of the scales look so natural! keep going I can't wait to see more!
PearlieMae
08-07-2015, 02:29 AM
That scale patch is SO realistic! It looks like the scales on one of my favorite fish, the arawona! That translucent look would make a lovely blended waistline.
You'll need to add more pearl pigment to your back layer to make the scales opaque.
Excellent work! And your voiceover is lovely! You could do that professionally! I'm excited to see how this progresses! Good luck!
(PS, I like your name...before I was Pearlie Mae, I was Nimuë la Mer!)

Thanks Froth! I love your tail design. Huge fan of more muted colours myself and I can see how my colouring could fit the 'belly' side of your tail! My own design is somewhere in the same say 'family' of designs (which makes me remember I haven't posted the coloured version yet... *derp*) so we could end up looking like mer-cousins. How fun would that be.
Thank you too PerlieMae! :) I'm realising - after doing some rip-and-tear-test with my sample to utter destruction - that the scales need to be even thicker. Possibly even with some powermesh lining, which should help with the translucency. But I'm definitely going for a blended waistline with that effect. Also the arawona is awesome, he looks so grumpy! Learned about a new fish today.
Some progress has also been made with the heel-disguise. Looking forward to sharing it with all of you guys.
(PS Yay to a fellow Nim!)
Absolutely beautiful scales! It's the kind I would love to have on a tail of my own one day, so seeing them in action was awesome :) Wonderful pigments as well, so shimmery and metallic! This tail is going to be really beautiful :)
By the way, where did you make your avatar? I can't find the site anywhere!

Freshwater_Nim
08-07-2015, 05:37 PM
Happy to hear you like it WaterDragon. Another design at the back of my mind that's even closer to my heart is higher in contrast and more fierce looking - but I've decided to go with one that works on shoots and also doesn't scare the bottoms of children when they see it - Not that I think all children are like that at all! Most I know are totally bad ass, pardon the language, but sadly the mothers that have to hire you think anything beyond candy and pastel colours is somehow unacceptable. Beats me why, truly.
Still I love it in its own way and the desaturated colours will teach me soft shading, being careful with pigment amounts and distribution and a lot of airbrushing skills. So I really look forward to making it :)

I've actually changed my design to that of a goldfish with somewhat muted colors, but we can still be mer-cousins :D
Freshwater_Nim
08-08-2015, 06:26 AM
Dear SeaGlass, never listen to people saying what you can Not do. That's nonsense! Every mer knows instinctively what her or his scales look like - don't let anyone tell you differently! Since your pic is black and white it's difficult to judge your natural colour palette, but I'm absolutely sure there's a good soft-colour version in it for you!
Oh dear seems like I saw the wrong design Froth :D I can't find your new design, but yes, we'll totally be mer-cousins anyway ;)
Freshwater_Nim
08-13-2015, 06:59 AM
Sadly there is not going to be a new episode today. I'm still waiting for a shipment of silicone and new pigment (which should be epic, if I'm and judge. Can't wait to start airbrushing/painting.) so I figured it wouldn't be worth posting a video where nothing happens! :)
But be prepared for an extra long one next week. Side-fins will be cast and painted and maybe there will even be a sculpture of the fluke. Additionally there will be a new scale sample with a new method of back and front painting on which I'd love your opinion.
Keep swimming! And see you next week.

Haha, sorry for the silence Celaeno! In all honesty I'm still struggling with customs. It seems to be an unbelievably complex affair to let through a collection of pigments from overseas (ok, admittedly they Do look like a drug shippment in their little zippy-bag-filled-with-odd-powder-self... But really! Also my shipment of shellshock and the large(r) pots of silicone I ordered two weeks ago are still lost in postal limbo. All in all; I'm antsy too. ;)
I'll upload a little failed-experiments compilation sometime before the week is over though :) it was an educational few days for me.

I love your videos!
Notes as I watch:
1. Glow in the dark pigments, when used in quantities to make for a really dramatic glow, makes silicone look like snot. While it's a great idea in theory, I've only been swimming ONCE where it's dark enough to see the effect, and that was in a lake at night and it was very creepy.
2. Since I do individual scales, I find pigmenting my silicone experience quite different than yours, but I expect with scale sheets, it's harder to control.
3. I'd suggest using an oil-based clay like Plastilina for sculpting fins (I use it for everything!), no cracking, drying, and you can come back to it and sculpt any time! Plus, the oil in the clay acts as a release when you make a resin mold.
4. Ghost colors are also know as interference colors.
5. Your fins are gorgeous! Love the shape and the hint of the ghost/interference colors are hypnotic.
6. I can't wait for the next installment!
Keiris

LOVE watching the videos! The interference colors are fun to work with. I used quite a bit of it on my Hybrid tail and use a lot of it in my art work. Can't wait for the next installment!

Aww thanks for the notes Pearlie! I really appreciate them.
1. It does doesn't it! What a tragically accurate description :D Also; creepy is fun.
2. I suppose it must be yes. Thing is I'm a bloody annoying tinkerer and tend to make things more complicated for the sheer fun of it. We'll see how things develop.
3. That's a great idea. Funnily enough oil based clay is really hard to get a hold of here. Don't ask me why. And the few items I found were seriously expensive. But maybe I'll just have to face the music!
4. Yes, that's the word! Oh I was looking for that!
5. Thank you so much!
6. <3 I can't wait to get going properly again.
Thank you too Keiris! They are fun aren't they! :)

@Moniee; hearing that means a lot to me! I'm so hoping to get a more realistic result ^^ Because as much as I respect and adore the handiwork of other tailmakers out there, the colours are just always too...overstated for little freshwater-me. We're not so flashy :D Also, your gold/black tail looks great. Very Art Nouveau. I love it.

Anywho! A few making off pics!
First off, total desaster pic. My foam scales looooved the shell shock(tm) so much they up and on married on my table. I had to torch the entire thing with a heatgun and then spent literal months scraping the mold clean... ...talking about it gives me horrible flshbacks :D
38936
Next up my self made monofin. Yay! So proud. Also don't trust it At all.
38937
And lastly some random layering shot. That's the one thing I learned about working with silicone, you wait. A Lot. - Apologies I can't get the pic to be the right side up, for some reason...

While I'm waiting for the next shipment of silicone (seriously being a tailmaker in Europe is very complicated...) I'm fiddling with my shell top-thingie. Not very far yet, but I covered the nude bra in fake waterlilly leaves and added the shell cups. Now what to do for straps? Not sure yet *flail*

Oooh! I'm sure there's a potential goldfish out there, if not, I might be interested if you're looking to relieve yourself of the pigments!
As for the top, I see lots of the decorative fishnet incorporated into straps, I guess you just sew it in to the bra base. I haven't made one, so I'm not sure...maybe make the fishnet straps long enough to tie like a halter?

I absolutely adore your scales - they're so beautiful and subtle, and VERY realistic! The colour shift is just gorgeous. I can't wait to see this finished!
Regarding the waiting part - I use a hairdryer on a high heat / low power setting when I'm painting with silicone and it really speeds up the cure time. (Platsil Gel 10 takes about half an hour normally, longer when you thin it - and the hairdryer speeds it up to about 5 min.)

Thanks everyone for your comments and requests. :) However there seems to be a small misunderstanding; I'm not looking to sell the pigments. First of all I'd never sell something I got gifted ^^ and secondly, I was planning to work with them a bit myself and see what I can make. And I don't know if there's going to be enough left for another tail project.
That said though, maybe I won't use them - and I'll offer them (for shipping costs only of course) to anyone intrested in order of inquiry. First two are PearlieMae and Merman Ordep (including timestamps on the personal messages :)). I'm dearly sorry for everyone who showed interest afterwards.

1. No, I do not use airbrush. My tail is completely handpainted. I just can't get the thinned silicone to not clog my gun every ten seconds. It was waaay too frustrating.

Freshwater_Nim

Thanks :) No, I've used a common hot glue gun from the local hobby store! I'm not sure we Europeans have even ready access to E6000, and if we do it's probably called something totally different :D
MermaidLiara
01-13-2017, 04:08 PM
I see! Actually, I am from the Netherlands and I ordered E6000 glue at a Dutch webshop today. Many of my fellow Dutch mermaids also use E6000, and also call it that. It should also be available in Switzerland (that's where you're from right?), under the same name :)
But anyway, the glue you used probably works just as well :) what's it called? ^^

I love how it's so shiny! If I looks this shiny in photos it must really gleam in person! What gives it such a shine? Just the pigments or I that from the interference pigments you used?
Just read thru your thread, you said you hand painted it (no airbrush). Did you hand paint the whole thing or did you pigment everything first and then add details with hand painting?
Amazing work! Needing to get back to work on my tail!

Hello my lovely fellow mermaids and mermen! I'm back and I bring many a picture and even a video! (Yay, so excited :yay: )
However it'll take a week or two until our amazing fotographer has had time to do her postproduction magic, so until then I'll try and at least provide you with some fun and and occasionally super dorky behind the scenes pictures.
So have three to start with. <3
First, neutral buoyancy test? Passed! :D
40261
Second, propulsion test? Check! ^^
40262
Third, ...that's the face you make when you realise one of your bra-shells has just popped off...
40263
Now to come back to some questions you guys have been asking:
@ PearlieMae: Felix is very smoochable and still an energetic, golden haired wild child ^^ Best wishes back. And I bring lotsa pics, promise! :hail:
@ HamptonsMermaid: Thanks for your compliment ^^ It's so shimmery because I painted both the inside of the tail and then the top of the scales with interference colours. The actual scales are transparent, that gives an effect known as "subsurface scattering" of light. Which basically means some light passes through the surface and reflects of deeper layers = extra shiney ^^ Does that answer your question?
@ Several people ^^: Yes I might start taking commissions. I'll do a damage assessment video later, to show you guys the wear and tear of a full week of shooting and I want to do a thourough check of the inner workings of the tail. If all of these hold up, I don't see why not ^^ I've got like 20 new ideas already, and who needs 20 tails for themselves?!

@brinneyy: Thanks dear! ^^ Since it was my first tail, which means I had to make all the sculpts and molds and so forth as well (also I lost material on failed experiments) - Putting all my expenses together I could probably have easily bought a Merbellas tail right off the rack :$ Good thing is I could make it exactly as I wanted, and making more tails for myself and friends will now be significantly cheaper :). So I wouldn't go back and do it differently, but it wasn't a money safer either.

Another doodle for Pearlie :) Oh! I know what you mean. I didn't even consider someone would use closed heel monofins for a mermaid tail. it's impossible to get nice lines and hidden heels in these Monofins as the angle is off from the very start. I'm very sorry :sweat drop: Most of the sport-monofins have open heels, so if all the competitive finswimmers and freedivers use them I figured there must be something to it. Personally I'd never ever go back.
40308
PS: You're very welcome <3 Happy to help
moniee
02-16-2017, 08:53 AM
My first monofin plan had an open heel however I read that when it comes to swimming, it is necessary that the whole length of your foot is supported, otherwise it's bad for your feet and you'll get cramps, so that's why I skipped it in the end... now you're saying there are actual monofins for divers...I'm confused @_@
Freshwater_Nim
02-16-2017, 09:06 AM
It is a bit confusing. I suppose the state of your training and physical fitness is important when choosing your monofin. Open heeled monofins Do provide less support then closed ones. So to use them without danger of joint pain or strained sinues you should probably not be a complete beginner. Competitive swimmers and freedivers would have strong and well trained feet, ankles and calves, so they can handle the additional challenge easily. I used to be a professional dancer, so the muscles around my feet and calves are also well developed.
But cramps you can get from anything that overwhelms any one of your muscles. It happens to everyone :D. It can also indicate a magnesium deficiency (which your body needs to relax muscles) so if you suffer frequently from cramps in your muscles, try taking some magnesium food supplements (totally helps me for example).
Otherwise if you take good care of your body and keep up your training, there is no reason open heeled monofins should damage your health or wellbeing in any way.
moniee
02-16-2017, 09:10 AM
I see thank you for explaining :) I'm glad I went for the closed heel though for my first tail, it helps me to develop my muscles. I also cycle to work so I have some great muscles too, so hopefully I can handle these better now!
Thanks for your reply, again, I can't wait for the final pictures!!! You are such a great inspiration. I actually got my bum up and fixed my torn tail because I saw how cool yours was and I wanted pretty pictures too! You rock!!

Do you think there's a way to do this with a fabric tail? I'm building my own fabric tail sometime soon and I hate the heel thing, so I was hoping I could hide it somehow :)
Also, what does it look like with your feet flat on the ground or angled/pointed forwards? This drawing shows them pointed down !
Unless, there is no way to point them forward?

WONDERFUL.. gosh
and honestly, I prefer much more the "raw" underwater pictures, (the one everyone wants as a print, specifically ^^ ) I know photographers wanna bring out all the colors and things with post alterations, but for me it takes away the ghosty underwater feeling and lights, in many case atleast - still cant wait to see the final one,s tough ^^

Go for it Pearlie! <3
Thanks Slim and Salty <3
And, you know I think I agree with you Livou :)
Hi Rebela! :)
Apologies for the late reply. The principle would absolutely work in a fabric tail! However I'd suggest not using siliconef for the pieces around your heels, as they are quite heavy and would bulge and pull at the fabric as you swim. For a very cheap method, get some large soft cleaning sponges stitch and glue them together and cut them into the shapes you need. That gives you a much lighter alternative which doesn't mess up your tail's shape. Oh, and yes, you can still point your feet any direction you choose, though you will feel a little resistance. I hope this helps a little and feel free to post or msg me again if further questions arise.

I've been meaning to ask what you used to make the monofin. Did you use another monofin's footpockets?

Thanks Dragon  You're very kind. Also, thanks Rett. I'm glad too! And I plan to improve all the little details for my next tail :)
@Leina:
I used a polymer sheet, usually used as a base for large ad-boards. It's a matt, transluscent (not clear), very bendy material that doesn't break and is impossible to tear. And yes, I used leaderfin footpockets. I didn't want the safety risk of self made footpockets :D. How it swims you can see below!

It swims beautifully. Great job. And I love the idea of using existing foot pockets. Seems much easier and safer than attempting to make your own.
What type of glue did you use to put it together?
Freshwater_Nim
03-15-2017, 04:25 PM
Thanks guys! <3
@Leina; the footpockets actually came with a glue. I had the choice between rubber glue and fibreglass glue when I bought them. But the label on the glue was in kyrillic, so I could not tell you what it was called if I tried :D. But any rubberfriendly superglue that stays flexible after drying should do just fine. Just make sure you roughen up the surface of your fluke sheet where the glue touches it, that makes it stick better.

Oh I didn't realised you could buy the foot pockets by themselves. I thought them must have been from an old fin. Thanks.

Hi Nim [emoji4]
I know you hand paint your tails. Are there certain types of brushes to use that a better (or some to avoid) and are you able to clean them after or do you need a new one each time??
