Scales?

I watched the special features on H2O just add water and they showed a *bit* of tail construction. I am so curious! The're talking about thousands of tiny plastic scales hand applied. I'm familiar with sequining and I'm so intrigued by this above and beyond approach. Anyone done this kind of scaling? I have my own ideas for my original design, but I'm trying to become familiar with different approaches and silicone is still beyond me...

Once I get back home I am going to rummage around in the hardware store to look for new scale options! I'll get back to you on that

There is a device that Think Geek used to sell on their website (they may still sell it) that you could use to punch a guitar pick shape out of old gift cards and credit cards. I imagine this would make your process go a bit more swiftly than hand cutting and give you a pretty good "scale" shape by default. I realize this may well be what you are already using for this project but wanted to mention it just in case. ;)

I'll have to check out that guitar pick punch. I like how you can either have pointed scales or wide rounded scales with it. I am likely going to make scales using the plastic that those little folders are made out of. I don't know what it's called but I'm hoping that I can buy the material cheap and in bulk.

That's what I used! It worked surprisingly well. Guitar picks are a convenient scale shape lol

I know, right? There's a particular brand of guitar pick that makes a gorgeous mother of pearl kind of plastic they stamp the picks out of and it would be stunning to craft a tail from them but they'd be prohibitively expensive since they only come in small packs and not bulk. Guitar pick punch to the rescue, hehe
