(1) Perfumes, colognes, and many other scented products contain an abundance of harmful chemicals, many of which are listed on the EPA's Hazardous Waste List.
(2) Approximately 95% of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum.
(3) Some scented candles contain acetone, benzene, lead, carbon monoxide, toluene, and more.
(4) In addition to many fragrance chemicals, chloroform was found in tests of fabric softeners.
(5) Ironically, "air fresheners" do not freshen the air at all. What they do is mask one odor with another, while diminishing one's sense of smell with a nerve-deadening agent.
(6) Phthalates, a large family of industrial chemicals linked to permanent birth defects in the male reproductive system, are found in everyday products like hairspray, deodorant, nail polish, and perfume.
(7) By all accounts, the fragrance industry is primarily self-regulated. Safety testing is not required and ingredients used in fragrance formulas do not have to be disclosed even to regulatory agencies and there is little monitoring of compliance or enforcement of laws that are in place.
(8) Fragrances pose serious health concerns for millions of people with asthma, allergies, migraines, chronic lung disease, and other health conditions.
(9) Up to 72% of asthmastics report their asthma is triggered by fragrance.
(10) Ashmatics and others that are negatively impacted by fragrance often have difficulties working, obtaining medical care, and going about activities of daily living because of others' use of scented products.
(11) Approximately 12.6% of the population suffers from multiple chemical sensitivity, a condition in which they experience reactions to low concentrations of common chemicals.
(12) Strong fragrances such as perfumes, air fresheners, or cleaning products can cause individuals living with autism spectrum disorders to feel agitated, get headaches, gag, or vomit.

but that doesnt stop essential oils from giving people migraines or nose bleeds, or asthma attacks. Something doesnt have to be poison to bother someone. if it's overwhelming it can still trigger attacks. Some essential oils give me really bad migraines and make my skin burn even just being around them. but others are quite lovely. (I use lavendar oil on coconut oil) Some essential oils can also be dangerous as many people dont understand that most of them aren't to be ingested or put directly on your skin.

I live a mostly scent free life and it improved my health drastically.

For someone with environmental illness though or MCS even fresh cut flowers in a room can make them sick.

Raina, I'd never heard of someone having that strong of an adverse reaction before. That must really stink (pun retroactively intended.) I have a sensitivity to synthetic fragrances myself, but thus far no essential oils have ever bothered me. I've just had the awkward moment of explaining to my mom why I couldn't use the nice body lotion she got me for Christmas. Luckily it turns out I inherited the sensitivity from her so she understood.

As for the essential oils, I'd also like to throw in a note that it is worth trying to find ones that use sustainable sources. It's not a big deal for a lot of scents, but I know sandalwood is one you want to be careful about. I've read horror stories of people having their beautiful old trees poached from their property.

Thanks for this thread and the info in it.

I have a case of environmental illness- strong odours of any kind, but especially unnatural ones
(exhaust fumes, smoke, "perfumes", scented powders, solutions, skin-and haircare products, etc) give me coughs, headaches, chest constriction, and even nosebleeds.
(I just didn't know about the nosebleed, I didn't make the connection!)

Thing is, my family thinks I'm being "difficult" and am exaggerating/making things up when complaining about the strongly scented stuff they use.
As soon as they do, I can smell it, and the smell clogs up the entire room where they are.
Hopefully, I can convince them that this is "real" :eek:

I can't avoid all the smoke outside (at least half of the populace are smokers) nor the exhaust fumes.
I just want to be able to breathe at home :(
We also have to keep the windows closed most of the time, because our house is surrounded by the proud owners of ever-smoking fireplaces/chimneys :p

Perfumes and strong chemical cleaners make me want to vomit. I always get headaches at work and no matter how many times I tell my co-workers how it's affecting me they act like I'm making it up.
