Fin material ideas? (Fabric tail)

I'm in the planning stages of making a new fabric tail to debut when I go up to Maine, and I'm wanting to make some hip and dorsal fins to sew onto it. Are there any material suggestions for these?
I'm not sure what kind of fins I'd like, so I'm open to any suggestions. Tassels, sheer fabrics, etc. ^_^ I just need help finding materials! :B

Chiffon is great if you want to use a fabric, otherwise maybe vinyl if you want to use plastic

Some people have used clear shelf liner cut into fringe to make fins, they move beautifully in the water.

I would use dyed zip ties, if you look at mermaid Kariels tails on google images or YouTube they are gorgeous and that is what she uses x

Vinyl? That's an interesting concept in the least. I may try chiffon if I can find any in a rainbow-y color. Iridescent? Yes.

You'll have better luck finding rainbow/iridescent fabric in organza than in chiffon. Organza will have to be hemmed, though.

There's a beautiful iridescent organza at JoAnn's...just use some FrayCheck along the edges.

Will the fray check hold up in the water over time? Or is a reapply kind of thing?

It can be washed and dry cleaned. I believe it should be as tough as the fabric.

You also can use a burning (without flame) innocence stick to make the fabric stop fraying ;) Just slowly take the edge of the fabric near the glowing part of the stick. ;)

I'm curious if silicone will adhere to that iridescent organza mentioned above. I was eying that same stuff at Joann's the other day, and wondering if I could make some hybrid silicone and fabric fins and fluke. I'll be making a new pink opal inspired sequin tail.

I use the iridescent organza inside both fins and flukes!

Also, I don't recommend singeing the edges of the organza. It will split and fray under the enormous stress of swimming. Plus, it will give you a crunchy edge, it gives off toxic smoke, and looks terrible. I would use the FrayCheck. It's inexpensive, durable, soft, and invisible.

Always do a small test first!

Awesome! I'd like to try and see if I can get the silicone to act as a base where the fins attach, that gradually blends into just the fabric at the edges of the fins.

Another material I love to use for fins, is that super fine mesh illusion fabric. It's not as heavy as Power Mesh, but it has a little stretch and comes in a ton of colors. It can be painted and dyed too!

The fabric will need to be completely encased, because if you pull it, it can separate from the rubber. I like to use it in flukes because they aren't stretched.
