Hi Everyone!

I love having tv shows on while i work.
When i am making new items for Fairy Me i love listening to new age music or having a great fantasy show on.
Does anyone know some great fantay tv shows/series?
It can be mermaid related, fairy related, magical related etc.
I know H2O and have seen most of those already.
Even great fantasy movies are most welcome :-)
I have seen A LOT of fantasy movies but always looking to find some more great tv shows and movies.
I have seen all the Harry Potter movies, Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit trilogy, Stardust, Splash, Aquamarine, Eragon, The last Unicorn, Hook, all the Twilight movies etc etc.
I prefer some fantasy tv shows since they last longer (can watch those for weeks and weeks and really get into the stories :-)
Hope to hear some suggestions :-)
Thank you in advance! :)

Do they have to be current? Because there were some excellent series that I've enjoyed catching up on: Buffy, Xena, Supernatural, Forever Knight (cheesy as hell but I loved it)...

if if you haven't seen Legend you'd probably love it. Fairies and unicorns and Tom Cruise before he was famous. :)

They certainly do not have to be current :-)
I love the old stuff!
We actually watched Bigfoot tonight, the one from the 80's i believe it is.
Thank you for the suggestions!
I am writing them down and going through them.
I have seen supernaturel and some of the buffy's but could be fun watching buffy from the beginning.
Keep em coming mer's :)

I recently watched the original Fantasia. I thought it was amazing and very underrated. While the movie is mainly about the music, it contains short stories with fantastical themes like fairies, greek mythology, and other magic. It is definitely worth the watch and is on Netflix!

Do you mean Fantasia as in Disney's Fantasia?
I have never seen that before and sounds like something i would really like :-)
Keep the suggestions coming mer's :yay:

Have you tried the cartoon series Gargoyles? I'm not sure how long it is, but I loved it as a kid and after re-watching some recently still love it as an adult. I'm not sure how long it is and I believe the original creators have declared some of the later parts stricken from canon, so it might be kind of on the short side.

I have seen a few episodes of them with my hubby and i really liked it.
Not sure why we stopped watching them
Will definitely put that on my "To watch"list :-)

Buffy had a spinoff series called Angel, if you end up loving Buffy. There were two short-lived series that I enjoyed (6-8 episodes apiece): the Dresden Files and Constantine (urban fantasy, not sure if that's what you're looking for). You might enjoy Firefly (also short)- it's basically a spaghetti western set in space (if you like Joss Whedon's writing and humor; he did Buffy). and if you like Sci fi crossed with Muppets, there's always Farscape, which is probably the weirdest show I've ever seen.

Oh! And there was a Jim Henson show a long time ago...The Storyteller? (Googles...yes, that's right). If you liked The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, you'll like this series. (And if you haven't seen Labyrinth and Dark Crystal, put them on your list right away!)

And (here's where I show my age...) if you REALLY want old school, there was a hysterically bad fantasy show on WAY back in the early eighties called Wizards and Warriors. We're talking eighties hair and lousy special effects, but it's close to my heart because of course I wanted to be princess Ariel (played by Julia Duffy)....and it was only years and years later when I realized she's a total airhead with a penchant for leather pants. It also had Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) as Prince Eric. There was also a cartoon in the 80's called Dungeons and Dragons, which if you can get past the generic animation actually had some fairly interesting storylines. Again, one of my guilty pleasures. :)

I don't know if you have seen Oceangirl, it's a nice series too. Been trying to find it myself from a good source because I wanted to see it again.
If you like the Muppets, you might like the Freggels too

Omg i love all these suggestions.
Wizards and Warriors is a game i play on the NES sometimes, i had no idea there was a tv show of it. Awesome! I will have to check that one out.
I loved the Freggles growing up so another great suggestion and Ocean Girl i don't know so will have to look into it.
I have written every single suggestion down, love them so far.
Keep em coming mers :)

Great fantasy series I enjoyed very much (in no particular order):

Buffy (7 seasons)
Angel (5 seasons, I think they scrapped the last one- BOOO!)
Ocean Girl (4 seasons)
The Girl From Tomorrow (2 seasons)
Charmed

Dark Angel (more sci-fi/tech than fantasy, but still really worth a watch)
Merlin- the new adventures (I hate what they did to the story/characters, but the actors were nice)

And if you liked Twilight, you should watch the show it was ripped off from:
True Blood.
It's mainly about vampires in the first season, but you have a slew of magic and supernatural creatures in it along the road.
And more importantly, it's a billion times better than its rip-off.

I liked Twilight, both the books and the movies, but when I saw True Blood I nearly fell laughing off my chair seeing just how much Ms Meyer has copied it- down to entire dialogues, word for word lol.
Warning: it's for adults, very graphic, very brutal and bloody at times.
I would have loved the show even more without some of the violence, but still: great show.

Game of Thrones is a cool show too, but the violence overload was too much for me.

I watched only excerpts of it on youtube (I love the dragon storyline), and what I've accidentally seen from some of the slaughter secenes I was just like; no way will I pay money to see this in its entirety :p

This is Brian Froud's cartoon from 1981:

Shelly Duval's Faerie Tale Theater is all on youtube. It's for children but it's full of really great cameos from people like Mick Jagger and Robin Williams.

Lol i will watch the movies asap i promise! I know it is a disgrace being the fantasy fan that i am and not having watch them * bows her head in shame* :$
I actually love GOT even with all the violence, although it is very harsh i do agree with that.
Thank you for the great list Echidna!
I am writing everything down that is suggested to me because i want to try them all! :-)
I love Brian Froud's work, i have books of his work and a oracle deck as well, just beautiful so this cartoon will be watched! And will definitely try Shelly Duval's Faerie Tale Theater.
You know what? Sometimes even if a show is not great, the costumes, colors or anything else can still inspire you to create something or simply entertain you :)

I never watched that before, it's precious.
I own all of Froud's books and the oracle deck. Great fan of his art.

Edit: The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are a must-see.
Some of the best otherwordly stuff I've ever come across.

The cameraman of Labyrinth must have been stoned or something though.
You'll see what I mean when you watch it

Also, the links youtube gives on the page with the faery cartoon are...disturbing, to say the least.
wtf have faeries to do with drug abuse?

Which oracle deck are you referring to? He's done two. (I have both. Been a fan of his work since my teen years and he's still one of my favorite painters.)

Oh has anybody recommended Ladyhawke yet?

Another good 80s fantasy movie is Dragonslayer.

oh, I didn't even know he had done another!

I have the first (Faerie oracle), and I've found it astonishingly accurate and helpful even where a normal tarot has failed me.

Can you recommend the Heart of Faery Oracle deck?
Nice artwork is a given, but is it useful if one already has the first?

So....i watched Labirynth tonight and..... I LOVED IT! Awesome movie.
The costumes, the colors, the props everything was done so beautifully.
A very inspiring movie! Thank you mers for the push of watching it asap :-)
Next movie will have to be The Dark Crystal!

@Seakaren, thanks for the suggestions, wrote them down on my "To Watch" list!

I love love LOVE The Dark Crystal. The Skeksis freaked me out when I was a kid, but it's such a gorgeous film. I always wanted a giant orrery like Augra's, and I love the connection between the Skeksis and the Mystics. "So, my hand..."

...I still yell "Trial by STONE!!!!" sometimes when the situation calls for it...

Can't wait to watch The Dark Crystal!
I have started watching "Charmed" since i remembered watching some episodes years ago and liking it.
And now have a great big list from all you mers!
Any other suggestions still most welcome :-)

Neverending Story, that has to make your list. Also I enjoyed Krull, though it's not everyone's cuppa tea. Time Bandits is also fun. If you like weird + vampires + Gary Oldman, check out Bram Stoker's Dracula. Also Interview with the Vampire.

gosh, it's like I stopped going to the movies in 1995, lol...

More recent movies you might like: Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke. And anything else by Miyazaki! Also Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells (Irish legends), and Princess Kaguya. And because I have an eight year old, I've also seen all the Tinkerbell movies, and they're quite good, actually!

Seconding Dancing Fish's suggestion of Secret of Kells, it is enchantingly beautiful. Still need to see Song of the Sea.

I've actually been going back and forth on the Tinkerbell stuff myself. On the one hand Tink doesn't seem to act much like her Peter Pan version, but on the other it is about fairies going on adventures.

Speaking of Fairies, did anyone mention Strange Magic yet? It's recent, and while it could do with a few less generic pop songs, it is quite pretty and has a neat premise. Also it was inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Can you recommend the Heart of Faery Oracle deck?
Nice artwork is a given, but is it useful if one already has the first?

I've found no indication that they're supposed to be used together. It's like they are two separate card decks. Personally, I use them together. If I had to compare them, then I would say that the first one is better in terms of how well it's written and how well the images seem to match the texts. With "Heart", the text that corresponds with each card is just one page long and there are no alternative meanings for the cards (depending on whether its upside-down or not). It's just one meaning per card.

Dancing Fish

Lol Strange Magic! Yeah, that one's...different. :) oh! Epic was also very good. Much better than Fern Gully, which has a similar premise.

The Tinkerbell of the movies is definitely not Peter Pan's Tinkerbell, unless she suffers a head injury or complete magical personality transplant at some point...but the movies are just so gorgeous to watch! I'm totally going to make a Pixie Hollow fairy wing fluke someday, when I get my dream mermaid store up and running... ;)
