Okay I don't know if this thread will go very far, since people are worried of getting their ideas stolen, but let's just see how this goes.

I have so many really cool ideas for potential youtube merseries/books/characters/fanfiction/etc. that I've always wanted to share and maybe get some opinions on, and I feel like there are others out there who want to do just the same.

I'll go first and share my idea first. Conflict is something that really drives the story. And what's more conflicting than a hydrophobic that finds out they're a mer? Also, why is the main character hydrophobic? What's their backstory? This so far is just a really small puzzle piece to a story. I dunno, I've always wanted to become an author and I just needed to let my tangent out.

Youtube mermaid series always have the recycled H2o plots. I've really wanted to create a youtube series that's something unique and different.

I have this idea that kinda goes off a lot of recycled ideas but I haven't seen this one used before. What if a mer had a necklace (I know you're rolling your eyes here) that contained all her power? and then she was traveling or on land and she lost it?

I don't know how feasible it would be for a YouTube series, but for stories ideas in general you could do something with mermaids that don't transform. I kind of have a story I've been playing with where wild mermaids are discovered in a remote area and do a sort of exchange program where some move to a marine biology research facility to be studied and to learn about humans. My version is pretty carppy right now because I don't know much about what actually goes on in a place like that. :confused:

Since I doubt I'll ever write it and I already have the file saved and dated anyway, here is mine: There are pools around the world (like H20) that can turn women into mermaids. However they don't turn all women into mermaids, just a very small percentage of the population. To complicate things still, what kind of mermaid it turns them into is random. There are four types. The first type and most common kind of mermaid has complete control over their ability to transform (Fredericka Bimm). The second most common type goes into the pool and just becomes a mermaid. No transforming, no legs, just a mermaid. The third kind is tied to the pools, their ability to stay human when exposed to water relating to the length of time since they were last in the pool, the longer they go the more sensitive they become until they simply become mermaids and stay that way. It is suspected that many of the mermaids assumed to be the second type are actually the third who haven't been to the pools recently. The fourth and rarest kind simply turns into a mermaid when wet and human when dry. They tend to be very paranoid as a result.

Both pinky fingernails of mermaids, with legs or without, are extremely shimmery, nearing on translucence. To other mermaids this tell is apparent, they can tell who is a mermaid as easy as they can ascertain hair color. Sharp eyed humans can also notice, but they have to be very aware of it, usually with training. Training is actually provided by an organization called the Sea Keepers. The Sea Keepers are humans sworn to protect all mermaids and the secret of their existence.

The plot conflict that I've come up with is that the human daughter of a mermaid family -though the ability to become a mermaid is largely random, it does seem to follow some family lines- has decided to end all mermaids by destroying the pools that create them. A particular mermaid -I'd figure the third type because that kind is very aware of what is going on with the pools- uncovers this plot and teams up with the Sea Keepers to stop it.

Obviously I've come up with more details, but above is the central theme to my idea.

This was an old plot idea that I changed drastically in the last...7 years? I think. I literally changed it so much I was able to split it into almost 4 stories because it was a bit much.
Anyway, there is this guy who finds out he is actually a royal from this other world of wizards and witches (crowd rolls eye at the cliché) and travels there were he begins to learn magic and all that good stuff. Basically what would have happened was that he would have found this long lost trident and befriend this beautiful mermaid gal (and this reason I mention this is because nowadays, I actually changed my mers from being humanly beautiful and traditional to being..well...more aquatic alien humanoid looking so the fact I had her as a half human/fish hybrid still makes me giggle) anyway, he befriends her, and changes himself into a mer to be with her and then she betrays him to a sea wizard and...yeah. It was horrible.
I began writing it when I was in 5th grade and it was just a bunch of stolen bits from Harry Potter and Little Mermaid and Halloween Town and crap mashed together. Then in 7th, I toned it down and kept only the parts about the trident and the merpeople excluding the witches and wizards and actually finished a REALLY nice story. But I still felt the original had potential so I started developing it as more a scifi story (genetically engineered "magic") and that came out well but I STILL felt like I could write a good fantasy so I started again actually making a new story based on the whole "boy finds out he is a wizard royal" plotline and went with that. Things made it easier and interesting when I realized I could set all my stories in the same world, which lead to interesting interactions, so yeah.

TL/DR (too long/didn't read): I made a story about a wizard who meets a mermaid. Then changed it into a bunch of different stories later in life and am working on making one into a script.

Since my immersion into the mermaiding world I've made 3 separate plots for mermaid youtube series haha, none of them ever really came to fruit mostly because people moved away or just got too busy and had to drop out of the project.

The first one was the simplest more of a mini-series/ short movie than anything else and centered around this lonely, outcast girl who one day meets a mermaid. She keeps it secret of course and continues to go back and visit her every day (this one was one of my ideas where mermaids were just mermaids and couldn't get legs) and the mermaid slowly helps her through some of her issues like self-doubt and lack of confidence. Eventually the human girl begins to make other human friends, and even gets a best friend. She asks the mermaid one day if the new best friend could meet her (though there have been a few instances where she had been talking to the mermaid and the friend had shown up and the mermaid had disappeared already) and the mermaid agrees. However the first time they show up the mermaid doesn't. Eventually, one day the human girl is sitting talking to the mermaid and the friend shows up, watching her talk to seemingly no one for a while before saying something. When asked about it the girl insists that she had been talking to a mermaid, even though the friend had seen none (and I'd have to make it obvious that there was no place for the mermaid to be hiding or out of sight, she just wasn't there) and the whole thing ends with this big reveal that the girl had been talking to a figment of her imagination this whole time, a creation conjured up by her psyche to deal with her loneliness and loss.


Second one was a bit more your classic youtube mermaid series, one day girl is walking on a beach after a big storm and finds a mermaid unconscious under some seaweed. She takes the mermaid home and puts her in her pool, hoping to give her a safe place to recover (again in this series I was reluctant to do the cliche of dry mermaid gets legs) and the series then revolves mostly around the girl and her friends making friends with the mermaid, them both learning about each other. Things get a little complicated when a new girl starts getting closer to one of the friends and eventually convinces them to tell her about the mermaid. The mermaid, by then, has recovered and the friends leave to take her back to the sea, and the other girl shows up at their house just too late to catch them. It would have ended with this reveal that the new girl was a mermaid hunter and end with her chasing the mermaid out to sea in a boat.


The third idea was my most complex one that I was the most proud of, and still hope to do some day so if people could not borrow it I'd appreciate it. It's a bit of a darker series, where mermaids are these ancient creatures who constantly scour the world for 'chosen ones'. The story would follow one such Chosen One, who up until this point has been a fairly normal girl. However one day when she goes for a swim she encounters one of these ancient mermaids. As the series progresses the pair get closer and closer, developing a deeper bond as she begins to push away and shut out her friends and family (the mermaid making sure to 'take care' of anyone she perceives to be an immediate physical threat to the main character or a potential threat to her eventually leaving (and yes I intend to include mermaid killing people in this series). After the deaths of 3 local teens a new character arrives on the scene, someone the mermaid quickly avoids, and begins asking questions about it, explaining to the main character later that he is 'not a friend'. However the new character continues to ask around about the main character, and is eventually confronted by the mermaid who threatens him but doesn't kill him. The big finale would be the main girl leaving with the mermaid to fulfill her destiny as a chosen one, the man revealing that the mermaid was his sister, who had been taken the same way when they were children and he had been hoping to save the main girl from a similar fate. (at least that's it in a nut shell but there's a lot more detail I had to skim over)

I also have a couple of ideas for mermaid music videos to songs that I'm hoping to do at some point :)

And what if someone else found it and got stuck with her powers somehow? Then you could have the ex-mer either trying to hunt them down to get her powers back, teaming up to try to find a way to restore or split them, or teaching the new kid the ropes.

For my own ideas, I'd really like to see a series done in the style of a reality show like Animal Cops, following a group of people rescuing or helping out mers in trouble--or people endangered by mers with darker intentions.
