Haha! I'm a "basic ass bitch" because I don't do my nails! Grats on your new tail too!

I'm not keen on those go fund me things either. The principal thing to me is, you're begging/asking strangers for money. You want zat tail, find some work, part time, full time, casual, household chores etc. There is more satisfaction in doing something yourself to achieve your goals.

Well I personally would worry that people would then feel entitled to something because they paid for your silicone tail. Maybe free gigs, etc. Just imagine if later on you got into making silicone tails and one of your donors came to you demanding a free or reduced price tail because 4 years ago they donated a lot so you could get your first silicone tail.

I see mers on here who have multiple tails asking. Some who already have a silicone tail asking to buy another.

Amen! You have to WORK to make your dreams come true. This is a concept that goes over a lot of people's heads.

I felt embarrassed and guilty from reading that. I know it's not necessarily about me though. You were just stating facts. I currently own two silicone tails from Finfolk Productions with one that I plan to sell in the near future. I plan to buy a new tail after the sale - it will be my third time - and by doing that, IT IS NOT my intention to upset anyone either here or on Facebook.

Some might think I'm wealthy, or lucky or spoiled.. Well it's none of them. I bought my first tail with my own savings, I took a small loan from my bank for the second tail and for the third tail, before I traveled to Florida, my parents being supportive offered to help and I would pay them back with no interest. I said yes.

For GoFundMe, as far as I'm concerned, I donate when it's a good cause like Iona's visit in Canada with Raina. I won't ever use that website for a tail. I would rather use the "week savings" challenge and as a matter of fact, I already started as soon as I came back from my trip. It's going to take time but it's much more rewarding.

I don't have a perfectly fine private island to use as a merfolk retreat... can I still crowdfund for that one then? ;)

I keep telling myself I'm going to do this 52 week challenge but as soon as I get money saved, something comes up that needs taken care of. i.e. vet bills, doctor bills. Ah well. One day I may get a silicone tail. For now sticking with fabric and soon neoprene.

That price is for a parcel of land on the island; $125,000 for beachfront and $75,000 for ocean access. You have to look at all the info.

A little closer to the US is a 10-acre parcel on Cockroach Bay for $199,000. Cockroach Bay (http://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands/cockroach-bay) Yeah, privateislandsonline.com is way too much fun!

First of all Yuku: You are so cute and happy in this video! Urgh I could dat u! XD haha!

Second: I must admit: I was a public pool bitch once by opening a GFM page for MAKING my own silicone tail. But I had some good arguments why and should give back to people.

Third: I must say: I was quite 'pissed' a year back ze about the fact that some people who got a shiny silicone tail - got another just like that - like a piece of Clothing. It was really frustrating. After that I sold my BASIC Merbellas tail before I was able to stand in line for a full silicone tail. The main reason I sold my tail was : the dying times of the neoprene bothered me and
the footpockets of the fin where way to narrow to get in - I needed a size up) and after experiance a competitor fin: it was mainly to heavy for mie out of the water. And u can only wear ONE tail at once, aye? ;)

Now I'm rocking my hanmade spandex tail for the time being. ❤️

That's great, like if you have something to give back to the community, like rewards and stuff!
I was referring to those that open up gofundme and then all I get from reading it is, "PLZZZ PLZZZ! GIMME MONEY SO I CAN GET A TAIL FOR FREE!"
I mean I don't know you, how do I know you not gonna spend it all on candies and fire coral??

I have a crowdfunding campaign going to build a mermaid attraction for local faires and events, with dry/photo op sets for multiple mermaids, not just myself.
For good reasons given on previous threads on this subject, I haven't posted about it on MN.
I'm also scrounging my own pennies and saving for my first silicone tail, and as a side note on my campaign page, I do mention it. I don't see that as begging others to flat out pay for my tail, but the option is there if people want to add to the money I continue to save on my own.

Its the ones that open up a gofundme to get free tails without offering or explaining why or what they would do, give back etc to the community. Do these people ever feel guilty that they pegged strangers for money?

Oh I doubt it ever crosses their minds! I also feel they cast those who are legitimately working toward a project to give something in return, in a bad light.

I never frown on kickstarters and indiegogos that offer genuine rewards, thankyous and hard work that equal the value of each donation. We offered parties, appearances, artwork and other goodies and raised some money and they paid off the rest over a few months worth of work. It's more the sort of things that want something for nothing or $100 for a name on a website that can appear a little more thoughtless.

I've been lurking on this top for a little bit. I feel like i need t weigh in since I do currently have a gofundme for a new tail. Though I'm probably going to suspend it for a while.

I have waited a while now to go after a new tail. I had the funds saved up but the car needed a new engine. I finally got a new job that paid better with more hours and was finally getting things set to save for my tail. I actually was going to have half of a new finfolk by september.

That dreamed is squashed now. I was let go from work thursday. Long story but Needless to say it wasn't though my own fault.. sucks. So Im stuck using my savings again to live off of.

Now. I was trying to crowd fund half of my tail cost and I had dropped it once already since I was able to save more.

Yes I have a tail.. But. It doesn't fit anymore. Its too big. The silicone is 4yrs old and I'm not sure I have the skills to take it in to keep using it a while longer. I attempted to fix my fluke since it seems it has come unglued from the monofin.

I have lost 4 inches from my waist... its just not possible to swim safely in it. :(
I love my tail...

I may sell it after i get a new one. I can still do dry events so I need to keep it until a replacement is made...

So. Yeah its annoying with all the gofundme campaigns out there but sometimes you may not know the whole story...
Ive used gofundme a few times when having financial problems and I am grateful it exists.

I don't have a problem with GoFundMe pages. I'll help if the mood strikes.

What does everyone think of Kickstarter though? On that site, you are given something back in exchange for your donation, and it is spelled out very clearly what you get for the amount you donate. I mean, someone could put up a Kickstarter event, and offer things like signed posters of them in the water in their tail for a $10 donation or, for a $1 donation, a digital wallpaper photo. Or, if someone does some crafting, like knitting or making jewellery, they could offer small handmade gifts in exchange for a certain donation amount.

I know a small percent goes towards the Kickstarter company (I think it's 5%) but no one gets charged unless you meet your goal.

It seems to me like this would be a much better way of getting help towards buying a tail for people who don't have the option of getting another job or who have a life that sucks up most of their money (like parents of small children, etc).

I feel 2 different ways about go fund me, on one hand sometimes I feel like the person has gotten so lazy that now they've started taking handouts for a tail (especially when they already have a tail that they could sale to put towards a new one), but on the other hand I feel like some people just are always dealt a bad hand and have nothing else to do but then again, a tail is a luxury item and not a necessity.

I will say that I thought of doing crowd funding sort of thing, but selling commissions if that makes since, so when you "donate" you're actually buying a commission from one of the price points and the point of using the crowd funding site is so the people can see how much money I've made towards my goal (and it's easier to post examples of commissions)

but I still have the same mixed thoughts about crowd funding so I haven't done it yet.
