Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this had been brought up in an older thread, but about how long after ordering did you guys wait before receiving your tails? I'd be really glad to know, thanks in advance for your help! :D

I don't remember how long I waited, but you'd probably do well to look through the most recent pages of this thread: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?4903-Finfolk-Productions-anyone-ordered-a-tail-from-them-I-just-did

As I understand it, they aren't taking anymore orders at this time

Correct, orders are currently closed as they switch to a partially custom, partially premade tails system.

Yep, I had seen the update on Facebook. I'm not planning on buying a tail from them at the moment, just curious ;) will help in future plans. But thanks for your help!

Waited for over 12 months. Heard that's pretty close to what people need to wait nowdays

Just hit my 18th month on the 19th and now working towards 19 months since my initial payment. My production month was April but I told the girls to take their time as I did not need it til mid-July.
My last communication with them was back in April where they said they were currently constructing my tail and would have pictures in a few days....... so far nothing.
The only picture i have received was back in August 2014 when they were working on my custom fluke.

Needless to say I am getting a little concerned as others who placed their orders after mine have already received theirs.

Ianthe

Wow, that is a very long wait! have you tried contacting them by facebook or email? I should think that you'd deserve some progress pictures of your tail.

Email but I am thinking that perhaps I need to try Facebook either with a post or messenger.

20 MONTHS??!!!! REDICULOUS!!!!!!!! Very Poor Business Practice...especially considering they told you it would be shipped out in a "week or two" when you spoke to them in September! Hopefully, it will arrive before Christmas and will have been worth the wait. Good luck.

I hoped they brought on some people to handle the emails/messages so they could concentrate fully on their craft.

Goodness, 20 months! you are very patient, mermaidhunter. Though I think they did mention that they had taken a one week break from studio work while hosting a friend. Have they contacted you further?

Mermaidhunter

Nope, no contact since the one back in September :(

Tom Cardwell

Modified rush charges for high demand tail makers.
180 day rush = $10K (double the max tail cost)......90 day rush = $20k no matter if its a base tail or decked out......30 day rush = $40k
Every time a rush order bumps everyone, we all get a $10-$20 credit distributed from the hefty rush fee.

Ianthe
11-19-2015, 10:36 PM
I don't think Finfolk's rush charges are that high; for example, their 30 day delivery is priced at an additional $1,000. Mermaidhunter, I wish you all the best in your wait!

Mermaid Wesley
11-19-2015, 10:39 PM
They're not that high, but I think that would be a good idea

Normally Finfolks rush fees are 400$.

Madison MerFaerie
11-20-2015, 02:01 AM
Nope, no contact since the one back in September :(

I was interested in a Finfolk seaweed top and emailed them at the beginning of the summer. MONTHS later in September they replied saying they could make the top for me but didn't give me any more information. I replied that I was ready to pay and would do so as soon as they sent me an invoice. They never replied.

It sucks to feel that hope and then get ghosted. I ended up getting a top elsewhere.

I'll probably be in the market for a new tail next year and I would love to have it be from Finfolk or Merbella. Finfolk would be my #1 choice, but this experience kind of turned me off of them. I know I could do a year-long wait for a tail but I'm not sure I could deal with extremely limited communication. Especially if it occurs after you've paid large sums of money for a tail. Especially when there are other great tailmakers out there who are improving their skills with every new tail they make, have faster turnaround, and excellent communication.

Tom Cardwell
11-20-2015, 07:43 AM
Umm, the reason I posted super high rush rates because their current rush rates are BOGUS.
I know people that have paid rush and didn't get their tail for that rush fee. *shrug*
If someone will drop $40k/$20k/$10k for a 30/90/180 day rush, guarantee it.

Sherielle
11-20-2015, 09:51 AM
At one point, Finfolk was top on my list for a custom tail. At one time, they were super speedy with their work. Unfortunately, even though I'm pretty sure they or Merbellas would make the most magnificent creation, I wouldn't stand the year plus wait.
Honestly, I'm sort of dreading when the current mermaid craze bubble bursts and all these tailmakers start losing business when mermaids are no longer the current in thing.

AniaR
11-20-2015, 10:11 AM
20 months is a long time to wait. But with people like finfolk and Raven there's usually always a reason. They don't just scam people. Raven was telling me about her longest orders and why they take so long and it makes perfect sense.

Often a tail is ready by a deadline too, but then people make changed and it delays them.

I know everyone wants more communication but it isn't standard in other expensive customized fields. If you go with people who are top of the line you're going to wait and likely have little communication because they're busy making things.

Since finfolk stopped taking custom orders I expect they'll start catching up. I'm not trying to invalidate waiting 20 months because damn, that is a long time. I'm not a finfolk customer and have nothing to gain by defending them. I just know from when I socially speak with the girls that they work their butts off.

Everyone always thinks they know how to run a tail making business better than the tail makers. But every successful tail maker ive seen runs into the same issues despite all these genius solutions ;)

Well it must be me because I have a record for purchasing custom made items and either never getting them, long delivery times and/or no communication. For example:

Mermaid tail by Adam Martin: 8+ years STILL waiting, LOL
Indiana Jones fedora: 2 hats ordered and paid for: 7 years. No communication or updates yet he will respond if you place a new, higher priced order.
Jack Sparrow pistol: 3 years... more my fault as I am trying to get a sideplate made which is now 18 months
Gandalf custom costume: 8 months. Sporadic communication.

Not a great track record. 20 months is nothing compared to others but I am getting a bit concerned.

Mermaid Alea

When considering getting a silicone tail you have to just put up with the wait time if you are set on buying from Finfolk or Merbellas. If you want a shorter wait time and more communication you can go with a newer tailmaker who will be less likely to be so swamped with tail orders and thus they will probably be able to communicate with you more and finish your tail sooner. Of course the downside to this is, there are plenty of reviews that Finfolk and Merbella tails are of great quality and the wait was worth it. Newer tailmakers generally don't have the same years of experience and amount of reviews.

I haven't bought anything from a tailmaker yet, but I can imagine that paying a lot of money and waiting a year or more gets very stressful and I am sure that you begin to wonder if they forgot about you when there is hardly any communication. You just have to wait as patiently as you can and find reassurance in the others who have ordered from them and are happy customers and say that the wait paid off.

Hey Mermaidhunter, I saw your post and had to chime in.

Getting an answer from Finfolk was like pulling teeth with regards to not only my tail, but asking for adjustments. I ended up giving up on sending the tail back to them for adjustments since they simply would not answer me (and seemed to be favoring another FF mer with regards to taking in her tail but not mine?) It definitely put me off from getting another tail from them in the future.

I do know they're very hard-working ladies but that doesn't make the wait time any easier. I'm very sorry you're having to deal with this, MH. /hug hug hug

Is it possible to message them once every 10-14 days asking for an update?

Hi Mermaid Octavia,

Thanks for writing and providing some insight.
Last time I wrote to them it took a couple of tries before I got that response that they would be working full steam on my tail...... back in September.
Being the holidays I am guessing that I'll hit 21 months (BLACKJACK!!) before I hear something definite with pictures, lol.

Thanks for the hugga hugga huggas :-)

If I don't hear anything before the holidays I'll probably start messaging them every week

Okay, I'm confused. If silicon has a very short "stick too" lifetime, aka once you start working with it you have to keep working until it's done or it will lose the ability to accept paint, or anything else then how could you have seen the fluke yet not have a tail when technically should have been done because of time restraints? Do I make sense? Were they working on a new fluke type in clay, or one of their flukes in silicon?

I sent them a message in November I believe to ask about ordering a tail and never heard back so I went with MerNation instead and a month later was swimming in my new tail. I love Finfolk. Their work is gorgeous but is it worth waiting years for?

PearlieMae
03-20-2016, 10:23 AM
The best result for adhering silicone to silicone is a short time, but it's been my experience that the working time is a lot more flexible than that. Not sure about painted silicone, myself, whether or not thinned silicone used for painting acts differently.

omg Hunter....I'm in disbelief. That is such a long time, and to only have the one update..... Your patience is really something to be admired because I would be completely and totally losing my mind.

I'm not pointing fingers here because I'm aware that I do not have enough information. I'd just wondering what their production list looks like... Some well-known clients have gotten tails recently (Sirena, Hyli, Eden, Arizona Ren Faire) and I'm wondering if those clients or any of their other clients have had a wait similar to yours... Maybe they paid rush fees? Did you pay a rush fee?

I know that they are busy busy busy making tails, but it might not be a bad idea to hire someone to handle their correspondence so that people aren't dropping thousands of dollars only to wait years with no updates.

AniaR
03-20-2016, 10:33 AM
I know they had to take a few days off for some stuff over this weekend (not to give an excuse, just giving context) They *did* have an assistant (Alicia Ward) and she kinda just disappeared on them without warning (now we know why) and it was so close to their move they couldn't get someone new in time.

But yeah two years is a crazy wait! I know there's a few merbellas clients edging that far as well but for specific reasons (such as Tia's elaborate design that required a lot of testing first)

Hopefully you hear something soon!

A waiting period of 27 months is ridiculous. Specially if other people ordered after you and already got their tails.

Absolutely the WORST business FAIL I have ever seen! Take someone's money for 2 1/2 YEARS with no result, little communication, no reduction in price. You can have a multi million dollar home built quicker than that! I'm a very successful artist and businessman. I understand precise detail work and being a perfectionist. However, if I had pulled this on one of my commissions I would have had lawsuits out the yingyang. This makes no sense to me at all, regardless of moving their location, especially if lots of people are getting their tails who placed orders after you. I mean, what if something tragic happened to you within all this time? You certainly have the patience of Job, MermaidHunter.

I completely agree with Keiris.

I know tail makers tend to be in high demand hence long waiting times, but the way they're fulfilling so many other orders that were placed after yours just isn't right. They should be apologising profusely and offering some form of compensation. I'd be tempted to double check your measures as well and update them if they've changed at all.

Being honest, I wouldn't be happy about paying that amount of money up front and then waiting that sort of time. It seems like once they've got your money, they don't care so much about the customer any more. If I were buying a tail I'd be much happier paying a deposit to cover material costs and then completing the payment when the tail is complete. To me, anyway, that would seem a lot fairer and less stressful for the client. I realise most tails makers take the whole payment up front, hence the reason they can get away with this so easily, but it does annoy me.

I'm gonna say this :

Most of the reasons why there is a huge delay are because of the clients themselves.

yeah, raven has clients waiting that long and while people will complain on the forum, when I hear the other side, it makes a hell of a lot of sense- I have a hard time biting my tongue. The tricky thing is, a tail maker cant really come on the forum and explain their side without risk of confidentiality issues, infringing on their OWN rights, causing issues for other clients.

Finfolk are literally one of the top reptuable companies out there. No one but the client is in a position to ask for any information. Let alone demand it. Please keep in mind you only get one side of the story.

And this is not to put down this merman in particular. Some of the people complaining in here waiting for things are my friends. But in GENERAL I just want people to remember that clients are very capable of being two faced or lying and it happens waaaaay more than you realize. The forum is OFTEN misued as a way to manipulate the participants into putting pressure on a tail maker, when in reality, all it does is add extra stress because they can't go any faster.

there are numerous reasons that are all valid why some clients might get their tails out ahead. So many people got tails before Tia Michelle, but for Tia's tail, raven had to totally re-do entire molds, styles, and TEST brand new features that she is INNOVATING for Tia. Ontop of a regular work load, that shit takes time.

so just before you get the pitchforks, let's remember, finfolk aren't mertailor and haven't scammed anyone yet- right?

LouLouBelle
06-27-2016, 02:19 PM
Fair point! If there are valid reasons that this one tail has taken so much longer, then fair enough. If not, then we can sharpen the pitchforks. (Just kidding!) But in all seriousness, they really should be hanging their heads in shame if they don't have a good reason for putting that tail off for so long.

They maybe haven't scammed anyone as such, but I do know one mer who's been waiting for well over a year on a top (which has long been fully paid) and has been told on one occasion it was done and ready to ship, then was told afterwards that it wasn't done at all... And that's definitely really bad business practice, and they haven't been entirely honest in that case.

It does seem such a shame, as their tail are absolutely stunning and the one I've seen in person is really well made and has lasted well. I absolutely adore their work and could quite happily sit and spend ages just browsing through their Instagram.

Whatever the reasons are, I hope everyone who's waiting on a tail gets what they're dreaming of and feels it was worth the wait.

I'm very with Raina on this one. Usually if a tail is taking a long time I like to think it's something to do with the client. Look at me for example; I'm about to hit 700 days soon but I don't complain because a lot of that was me taking forever to pick a design. I only settled on it in February and I asked Raven to try and develop the chameleon effect for my tail, which takes time and I keep adding stuff to my order haha. Now I could just come up in here and be like 'my tail has taken 700 days and no one would know any of that which is generally why I only post my wait if people ask or I'm making a point like this because I know it's all mostly my own doing and I honestly don't care that much.

Initial payemnt was sent in on 3/19/14.
My design, measurements and color scheme were finalized on 5/9/14
The custom fluke design finalized on 6/4/14 to which I had pictures on 8/27/14
Upgraded to individual scales on 7/3/14 which I was told would not impact delivery dates.

At this point the client (me) made no further changes except to let another tail customer
take my February 2015 spot as long as I had my tail by end of May 2015

^^ This too. The first time I ordered from Raven my tail took longer than expected because another client at the time was being very demanding and difficult. It sucks that others can make your wait time longer but it's all part of the experience I suppose haha.

Well, I have a funny feeling you won't be getting the pistol or the fedoras! (Please tell me you didn't pay a small fortune for them...!?!)

Whatever's been going on with your tail, I hope they get it sorted and get it done soon. From what you've posted, I do think they owe you an apology... And an honest explanation as to why it's been held up so much.

You do have a crazy amount of patience, and I really hope you're rewarded for it!

I would also like to point out that many clients end up pushing other clients back through their actions/inactions (think indecision on designs and colours, miscommunications on designs, requested repaints which often don't get charged extra for when they should be). Yet the tail makers have to wear it as their own time mismanagement and get anger for it. And with many clients and over time this builds up exponentially. And of course this is going to happen as they are expensive bespoke items; people are going to want them perfect and the girls want to make sure people are happy with the finished product.

I'm not trying to say that this wait is in any way your fault, Mermaid Hunter, but I've spoken to Abby and Bryn about their wait times and the way they put it is "There's always a reason why someone's tail takes as long as it does."
I highly doubt they've forgotten about you or intentionally put you on a backburner because they think they can get away with it. They have a lot of clients, both average people and big businesses. One of the biggest reasons why you're probably getting pushed back is because they have some clients that order many tails and put rush fees on all of them, like Wands and Wishes or the Arizona Festival. But even clients aside they've just been going through a lot. They had to move. They're working on sculpting an actual Calypso fluke because as it currently is, they don't have a mold for it. They just pour the Loreena fluke then have to cut and caste away to make it a Calypso. And they also lead personal lives. They just spent time living in Hawaii, and now they're in NC, but most their family and loved ones live in Minnesota.
I'm honestly so sorry that you've been waiting this long and so are they, but once when I was talking with them they said something that made me smile which is their wait times are long and they honestly wish that people didn't have to wait so long to receive their dream tails. But with every day their skills and techniques are getting so much better. Even though the wait sucks, the tail you'll be getting now will be infinitely better than it could have been had they sent it two years ago.
It'll be worth it. Keep your chin up and stay gold, Ponyboy.

Why dont they allow you a refund in your deposit. It's hard to go else where when they have your money

the whole point of the deposit is to hold your spot in line and cover part of the material costs. you'll be hard pressed to find a custom artisan who refunds deposits.

Also, it's always kinda weird when someone joins mernetwork and their first posts are negative about a tail maker. We've had lots of competing companies in the past do that to try and make tail makers look bad. So be sure to introduce yourself in the introduction forum, and check out the rules and helpful threads etc

I've just read through this forum and it breaks my heart for you Mermaidhunter! :(

I understand that rush orders and priority customers can push things back, along with circumstances; however at this point as a business I would be doing at least weekly updates to those customers who have been waiting unusually long.
A simple update of "hey we got a little painting done" or "Sorry, we didn't make any progress this week" would be kind and polite.

I hope you hear something soon and get more frequent updates.

I know it's a bit to wait, but I can promise you guys that they're working extremely long and hard on all of your tails. They love their business way too much to jeopardize their reputation by not following through on an order. The whole reason they worked extra to bring out their Mythic line was to be able to provide tails to people in a timely manner. They're still working on their current clients for sure. I'm not 100% on their process or what kind of tail detail you're wanting to get done, but they do take an extremely long time to create. Especially if they have a lot of clients, I could imagine the wait time to be a bit long. Hang in there! I'm sure you'll get it soon enough! :)

Today marks my 36 month/3 year anniversary of placing my order. :jawdrop:
To date, no word, no pics, no update..... zip, zilch, nada, zero.
While others have placed their orders months, if not years after mine and have received them..... I am still waiting and waiting and waiting.

The last update was back in November 2016 and was told that they had to completely redo the body - all new scales, all new body piece, all individually re-done and that there was some concern about silicone age and paint adhering properly, and they had issues with how some of their former assistants assembled my first body.

So.......... THE WAIT CONTINUES!!!!

AniaR
03-19-2017, 05:54 PM
You know I was talking to finfolk recently specifically about your tail, and my friend Marlas. And in both cases through no fault of really theirs (in your case an assistant who had ill intentions, and in marla's case some circumstances) both your tails basically had to be remade from scratch after hers being done and yours almost done (after first trying to salvage what was initially done). Which is a cost they end up eating both time and money. There's a reason so many of these tail makers end up not using assistants; because no one can do quite what they do. I think they've lost any money they would of made from either of you in the remaking of the tails, so certainly not a scam or anything (not that you said that, just that I know people will read and wonder). In any case I know you're both at the very top of the silicone list so I am sure you'll be hearing soon. Cuz I asked them about it specifically (on behalf of my friend Marla) and there's no one else before either of you. Hopefully you'll get it soon and we'll all be amazed!

Mermaidhunter

Yes, I know you asked on your own accord about mine.... just saying, if there was no one else ahead of Marla and mine....

Sorry, but this is starting to get beyond frustrating with me, especially when one sees other's tail getting done in half the time and I am hitting 37 months now and have put off 3 photoshoots. I don't even know if it will now fit.... things change in three years and I only supplied a measurement update over a year and a half ago when they asked as they were about to start.

I'll give this til the end of May and if nothing, I'll just cut my lose.

It's hard enough losing someone you love - even worse when it's sudden and unexpected, because there's a far greater element of shock. That takes a long time to get through, so I wouldn't be expecting anything from them anytime soon.

I could only find two groups on Facebook, and neither are public - they're both closed groups. One is the pod squad group, and the other was the finned folk group for tail owners.

I can't find anything on their page or website either.

I know it doesn't really matter - it would just have been nice to be able to leave a comment. (It's been over ten years since I lost a close friend in a car crash, and I still remember that phone call vividly. I wouldn't wish that sort of thing on anyone. It does hit a raw nerve when you see it happen to someone else.)

Anyway...

I really hope they're doing ok and getting the time and space they need, and I'm sure they're getting plenty of love and support from everyone around them. The world really sucks sometimes.

I dont think there was really any fuss, there just werent updates so they only replied when there were. And there were 2 people affected by it but generally the wait times arent as long. Plus they have 2 people added to the team now ready to answer emails!

I'd like to point out that two spellbound tails that were ordered a month later will arrive before we've even gotten an update on the the mythic scale tops we ordered XD they don't even use silicone. I know they're like doing all the mythic stuff at once, but alot of people have already received full tails. Still zero mention of the tops.

Mertailor already has the production/storage space and a production team he needs to produce more tails faster; which provides its own challenges, i.e. quality issues. Plus that's a full silicone tail, not a multimedia tail of silicone, neoprene, *individually hand sewn* resin scales and a zipper. They've repeatedly have said they're doing batches and they'll all be shipped out within July. They're trying to match tops to same ordered-by tails but most will probably end up shipping separately.

If you got one of the resin tops, they have to sew all those scales and they've stated (in the POD SQUAD) there's 1500-2000 scales on those tails alone, reinforced twice or three times. It takes time with a smaller group of people producing art.

As far as I know, they were working in groups..that is what they said. However, I got Unicorn Pink and have not received notification yet, so no I dont think they have all gone out.

I know this is old news but I just found out the other day... I'm so happy that finfolk is preparing to move to another larger warehouse and potentially hire on more staff! I hope that in addition to the mythic tail line can cut down wait time for sil tails, at least a little. Giving people the option to order a mythic tail instead (they remind me of a lux version of sequin tails) if they prefer that look might mean they don't get as bogged down by sil tail orders.

I just read through the thread and was thinking "mer definitely has some patience going one." Bryn recently posted on the pod squad group page that both she and Abby are taking some time off. Periodically, they check in on statuses of where they are in regards to tails, the warehouse, etc. I'm certain they haven't intentionally forgotten about you, but given their workload, it might seem that way. Fins crossed that yours is being close to finished

Yea....again, I think y'all are missing the point. So quick to make excuses for finfolk, when bottomline is he saw a nearly finished tail photo on may 17th...that's three months ago, and hasn't heard heads...or tails ( ;D) since then. Doesn't matter what break they're taking NOW. His tail should have been finished and sent out WAY before now. and if they had a progress photo of a nearly finished tail three months ago they should have made sure to ship said tail or at LEAST give some sort of update BEFORE taking a break and THAT'S the issue. a two week break isn't an excuse for 3 and a half years of waiting.

Oh lords of the sea, you are a patient man. I would have given up last swim season. Their current ordering for custom silicone claims tails says they will be made in 2018 and delivered by December 31st. That's a heck of a leap for your tail to suddenly become a 4 season ordeal. I do hope they have been adding bells and whistles to make up for the delay and floundering communication skills @_@.

TheMermaidQuintessence

I know. It sucks to see these awesome artists get swamped...... but the appropriate response would have been to finish those tails that were the earliest in the production queue rather than completing other orders that were placed much later.

I know Merbellas has a few people who have been waiting 2 years + but they all mostly wanted very custom work and knew it would take a while, or she told them up front that it would take a while.

Is there a specific reason yours is taking so long? I know originally it had to do with an assistant messing it up so it needed to be re-made

I took the time last night to read this whole thread, and what you were saying about custom work makes sense to me.

However, I feel like maybe through these 3 years, there should have been at least a few times where they could finish this tail. I wonder what's wrong as well?

Mermaidhunter
09-15-2017, 02:07 PM
Custom fluke.... but that was done back in 2014.
Individual scales... but that was back in 2016
Anything else like fins, measurements, paint scheme, etc was given back in 2014 (well, measurements were sent again in early 2016)

My understanding is that when they moved to Hawaii and had an assistant, the assistant did not do a quality job and that the tail portion has to be completely redone.

The sneak peek on Instagram was back on May 17, minus the fins and with the initial first coat of paint with a comment about shipping it out in a month........

Would love to see how this gets resolved. The fact that you need to pay it all upfront makes things worse -- and you'd think they'd be able to hire someone to handle the admin, the updates, etc.

Might the half upfront, half on completion model work in the case of silicone tails?

Iím really hoping that they start to focus on silicone orders soon. It does seem a little like theyíve been put on the back burner. I just passed the two year mark earlier this month and friends Iíve talked to about it insist that Iíve been scammed or that I should ask for my money back. Understatement. :/

When they asked for customer service feedback I mentioned how they are basically pushing aside silicone orders with all the Mythics and now fabric tails going out much sooner. In their response Abby stated if the fabric launch is as successful as they think it will be, they'll pull away Mythics until they have full staff to keep the girls on custom orders. The warehouse issue is the biggest thing setting them back from really taking off on it.

Mermaidhunter, I really think you should send an email if you haven't recently.
