Wolfdog

My dogs have stepped up their game when it comes to bringing me gifts after they’ve pulled their “escape from Alcatraz” move on getting out of the fence. Used to bring me back rats, bunnies, turtles, once they brought a woodchuck without a head. Now they’ve started bringing random dogs over. I haven’t gotten pictures of all the dogs but this latest one sure is a sweetie, and he was still there when I woke up for work so I gave him something to eat. Took him to the vet to see if he had a chip, he didn't. I also had the vet document his condition just in case someone did claim him, he's either been severely neglected or dumped. At this rate I think I have a new addition to my family, I've got him scheduled for heartworm treatment. I couldn't turn him in to the animal shelter, I worked there once and he wouldn't stand a chance of being adopted. Fortunately I live in a state where it's legal to keep wolfdogs, but I'm reeducating myself on the best care to give him. I'll try and attach some pics of the pup.

I am thankfull that my dog does not bring home "gifts" lol. All he does is occasionally run off, especially to the "girls" next door when they are in heat hahaha.

He's nothing but a big fluffy sweetheart. There was another dog running with that one, but it wouldn't approach me for anything. This guy won't be running after the girls for long, I don't need puppies on top of the other animals I have.

@Ayla of Duluth- Actually I'm naming him Balto, you know the sled dog that led his team on the final leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1925_serum_run_to_Nome), in which diphtheria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphtheria) antitoxin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antitoxin) was transported from Anchorage, Alaska (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchorage,_Alaska), toNenana, Alaska (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nenana,_Alaska), by train and then to Nome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nome,_Alaska) by dog sled (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_sled) to combat an outbreak of the disease.

Honestly I lucked out that he's such a sweetie, he's clearly been neglected and dumped by he's previous owner. Which is sadly what happens to a lot of wolfdogs. Mostly because people realize they can't care for the dog, or don't understand them. Or they got them just because they wanted a neat looking dog, and they stopped being cute to them when they realized how big it was getting. I've got a decent sized yard, and he gets along with my other dogs so at least he's got companions while I'm at work.

My Dad used to raise hunting dogs and I read about how your dogs brought this dog to your house and then I showed him a picture of the dog and he was like, "Where does she live?" Lol I think he wants the dog! :p

I wish you luck with him he sure is beautiful. I have played with the idea with having a wolfdog once I have my own place with a big yard but I am not sure if a wolfdog would be the right fit for me since I raise peacocks which would be certainly seen as a prey animal to a wolfdog.

I once met a beautiful black wolf on the beach. It was amazing to see a wolf in person but I must admit I did not expect such a huge canine to be so timid.

Someone I used to know bought a pair of confirmed wolf hybrids from an established breeder, and while things were fine for the first two years, as the male got older he began to exhibit signs of aggression and attacked his owner twice. Unlike domesticated dogs, aggression is incredibly hard, if not entirely impossible, to rehabilitate; that combined with the risk of rabies I mentioned earlier, meant she had no choice but to euthanize him.

Wolfdogs shouldn't be kept by anyone who doesn't have a proper outdoor sanctuary for them and have actual experience handling large, prey-driven wildlife-- Contrary to popular belief, wolfdogs are NOT fully domesticated and are countless times more difficult to handle than your average domesticated dogs; their body language and cues are different and often times will NOT exhibit the same warning signs under stress that a regular dog would; if you're not used to handling wolves, this can lead to problems. If you really want to feel special and get a wolfdog, there are countless dog breeds that look like wolves (http://drmark1961.hubpages.com/hub/dog-breeds-like-wolves), but don't come with the complications. Just get one of those.

I don't know much about wolfdogs, but I do know about the wild cat-domestic cat hybrids, and it is not a good thing. So many people want them because they look pretty, but once they mature, very commonly the wild instincts take over (marking everything in the house and destroying everything, aggression etc.) and people dump them in shelters (who often can't rehome them) or into the wild. For those considering a wild hybrid of any kind, I urge you to do your research and to please consider an alternative (as Tieri said, there are plenty of breeds that look the same without the problems, same goes for the cat world too). Please don't support the breeding of wild hybrids (see The Wildcat Sanctuary website for more information on this issue)!
Illyn, good on you for looking after an abandoned animal and giving it a home! I applaud you on doing your research, I want nothing but the best for both of you :)

When you all say "big backyard", do you mean like a regular backyard that's big or one of those acreage where you have paddocks for horses, cows, grain growing etc?

When I say big back yard, I mean I have roughly 3acres that he can roam on fenced in. He does have a prey drive and he does not get along with unfamiliar dogs, which is why I found it odd he gets along with mine so well.

Haha! Tell your dad I live in the middle of wrong turn country, past the last house on the left towards Deliverance. Joking but not joking, it's pretty out in the country. A lot of farms and orchards where I am.

I'm editing my initial response because what you said has been bugging me over the past couple days. I don't know if you meant to come across as snobby, but that's how I interpreted your post. I'm not calling him a wolfdog in order to feel special. This was after having a friend who's had one before and the vet say he was one, plus after watching him for the week he's been with me compared to other dogs I've been around my whole life. Of course there is no way I can no for certain what his lineage is. Apparently you didn't read the part where I said this dog came to me, I did not buy him. I am aware he won't be like a regular dog, I've done my research in the past on them when I toyed with the idea of having one. I brushed up on proper care and all that for wolfdogs. He may be have low or mid content wolf in him, cause that's how genetics work. Not all dogs or wolfdogs are the same. I'm going to have him fixed as that should help with possible aggression and displays of dominance though it wouldn't be 100% guaranteed, but it should help. When I say big back yard, I mean I have roughly 3acres that he can roam on fenced in. While wolfdogs in general do require more specialized care than dogs, a low content is obviously going to be much more manageable than a high content. There are no behaviors specific to wolfdogs, they simply are more intense depending on the content.
This sweet boy looks to have malamute and German Shepherd in him. Wolfdog or not, that's a great mix in my opinion! He really is beautiful!

Also, I wouldn't worry about rabies too much. The vaccine may not be officially approved for wolfdogs, but it is widely recognized as being effective.

That's actually what I meant by his behavior, thank you. About it being more intense than my dogs, but they're older and calmer and I've had them for 6 yrs. He is a beautiful boy, and sweet, I made sure he got his shots and he'll go in for heartworm treatment in the morning.
