Lexan monofin, how thick should it be?

Hey everyone, I'm new here and Im planning to make my monofin out of lexan but I cant seem to figure out how thick the lexan should be, any help would be great :)

I made mine from lexan I got at lowes. I don't remember how thick it is, but it was thicker than the polycarbonate that Fin Fun was using at the time, and it gives me plenty of propulsion. My tail's silicone fluke is big and stiff enough that it rivals my Finis Rapid for propulsion.

I think the Lexan you find at Lowe's or Home Depot almost always comes in a thickness of 0.093", at least that's all I've ever seen at any of my local hardware stores. You can look the products up on their websites: http://www.homedepot.com/p/LEXAN-36-in-x-72-in-x-093-in-Polycarbonate-Sheet-GE-08/202038066 I haven't used that particular thickness for a monofin, personally. I know some people have had luck with it, but I'd also read accounts of people who had issues with the lexan breaking (though I think how you cut it affects its structural integrity a lot too; you'll want to minimize stress points). I went to a specific plastics supply company to get some lexan that was a little bit thicker than the standard: http://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/polycarbonate_sheets/516 I went with the 0.118" thickness which is just the next one up from the standard thickness, and the fin I made from it provides excellent propulsion while still being pretty amazingly springy and swishy. I really like how it turned out. However I do plan on making a smaller, cheaper lexan monofin from just the standard hardware-store thickness so I can use it in a fabric tail, so once I've done that I'll be able to compare and contrast the two.

I ordered 0.25" polycarbonate and it has almost no flow-y-ness to it...it's stiff, like a Competitor monofin, and it pushes me through the water like a champ...but lacks any finesse. I have since started using a softer, thinner polycarbonate that looks wonderful in the water and is surprisingly propulsive.

The Home Depot Lexan - 0.093" stuff is good, but it will snap if your design is...extravagant. Short, rounded and plain is the way to go, just make your fluke (silicone or fabric) extend beyond the fin and use that to make it look fancy.

Agreed. Just be careful when you sandwich the monofin. You want to make sure there are no hard/pointy edges that can slice through the silicone.
