Why you should not shop at Urban Outfitters. (Image Heavy)

I understand that Urban Outfitters now sells the Mahina MerFin, which is awesome to have a US based retailer selling an Australian mermaid product. (Link here for a $100 pricetag: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=32230062 )

I also understand how much more convenient it is to purchase it from Urban Outfitters instead of buying from overseas. The shipping's ridiculous, the wait time can suck. I get it. But I encourage you to not support UO if you at all possibly can within your budget. Here's why.

1.

In 2014, they sold a $129 Kent State University bloodstained sweatshirt. It was named "Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt"
In case you were not aware, in the 70's there was a massacre at that university which killed four unarmed students. They were shot by the Ohio National Guard during a Vietnam war protest.

A 15 year old (at the time) model sued them as they released a t-shirt with a photo that she did not give permission for. They pulled a graphic tee with the words "I Support Same-Sex Marriage" emblazoned on the front citing "bad press" for the reason. The bad press was a single blog entry on the subject. The CEO at the time, Richard Hayne, was strongly against homosexuality and was the more likely reason explaining why. He donated over $13,000 to Rick Santorum who has said many things outwardly against gay people.

I'd also like to tell you that I basically just reworded the things from these articles. I am not claiming to have done any research--you can literally just type into Google "urban outfitters bad" and you will get endless results. They also have taken designs from the Navajo culture and the name has been used as branding. This wasn't included in the list because I couldn't find enough info to comprehensibly share this in a reworded way. At any rate, this company has a lot of controversy surrounding them and I am very disappointed that it's the only place in the US online to purchase the MerFin. I personally refuse to shop there under any circumstance. Also, I'm not very good at this sort of writing (news/real life factual sorta things) so sorry if it's choppy or weird or anything. I just wanted to get the word out about UO. :/

I ordered a Mahina Merfin from their website a couple months ago and they sent me a "basket shelf" instead. It was this huge, ugly item so I have no idea how they could have messed up so badly.

I ended up having to call their Customer Service line and they gave me the run around, processing it as if I had ordered the incorrect size and not doing anything about it for about 10 days.

After several phone calls from me, they finally shipped out my monofin, but when I received it the tip if one side of the fluke had a sharp "wave" in it as if it had been stored in a weird way. It has never fully flattened out, but I'm still working on it. They also sent me a warning letter in the packing invoice that I would be charged for the "ladder basket" if I didn't ship it back to them. The thing was huge and didn't fit in my car but I had my mom help me take it to the post office so I wouldn't be charged whatever indiscriminate amount of money they felt the thing was worth.

I was genuinely pretty pissed about the amount of time that this whole ordeal took and ended up getting a full refund from Paypal, so yay-- free Mahina. But Urban Outfitters' customer service blows and if I had to order another Mahina, I'd order it directly from Australia... at least they're less likely to send me a shelf.

Ugh, what a mess. If you set a heavy book on the tips it should flatten out...mine sometimes curves when I leave it in a funny way for too long but if I set a dictionary on top for a day it evens out.

My current merfin was from Urban Outfitters... Maybe whoever did my order was having a very good day, I was surprised it wasn't all bent out of shape. It came flat, unbent, uncurled, perfect!

Pfft even if I could afford half of the things they sold, I wouldn't click on their site. My friend ordered a few shirts and a bra. The bra was the wrong size as were the shirts. She even had a screenshot of her order with the correct sizes.

I didn't notice many of the things that you pointed out, Emma, but I've known of their bad reputation. The 'eat less' shirt and Kent hoodie are disgusting.
